Travel 4: All Around the World Same Song

Would it help if I said I'm in the lounge now sipping on a g&t?

You should go some time if you haven't been - would be happy to give some suggestions. Highly recommend to anyone.

I’ve often thought of it, and I would certainly take you up on that.

Today we went to a Michelin star restaurant that specializes in northern food and feasted on variations of khao soi and northern Thai sausage. I was tempted to yell, "get in my belly" but I held back.

I assume it wasn't Gaggan right? That's one I've heard to absolutely seek out.

No. Places like Gaggan are not my jam. We love a great food experience and we've eaten at some exclusive places through the years, but a literal car payment per person to me is just silly.

Arrived in Bangkok on Dec 23rd. Since then we've gone glamping and river rafting, now we're at the beach house until next Tuesday. Kids came to meet us from Minnesota and one of their friends from the Philippines met us and has been staying and traveling with us. Sadly the gf of our youngest couldn't join as originally planned.

Last night at dinner the kids played a game where they had to say a short phrase to the person sitting next to them in either English, Tagalog, Korean, Mandarin or Thai. That person had to then say a phrase that relates to what they were just told in a different language to the person next to them. So on and so forth.

Not all 3 of them are equally adept at all 5 languages, but they speak to each other often enough not in English that they have learned quite a bit from each other through the years.

I had no idea what they were generally saying, but it was fun to watch and pretty impressive. Kudos to their mothers as both fathers are linguistically challenged.

Air Canada can eat a bag of dicks and I have added them to the echelon of terribly operated U.S. airlines especially compared to gems such as ANA, Thai Airways, Korean Air and Cebu Pacific among others.

Let me guess: They seated you next to either a loudmouthed, foul-smelling MAGGAt or a Sioux fan.

Heading to Puerto Rico come late February. I can’t wait to use some atrociously bad Spanish that may or may not be words I make up from whole cloth!

I remember very little from my middle school Spanish classes.

I almost forgot KC (MCI) is another bad one. every 5-15 gates have a separate security checkpoint. Which sounds great, but it's actually way worse. It's a massive bottleneck given the size of the areas. Plus the seating areas are way way undersized for the planes they fly in and out.

The good news is they're rebuilding all the terminals and my understanding is it's going to be closer to what Charlotte is.

reporting back

new MCI is incredible. Good layout, good and plentiful food options. Wide concourses. Lots of natural light. High ceilings. Clever art installations. Smooth check in and security.

top notch.

edit: food prices to match the new terminal. Whoa.

They charge is cause they can get it...

I'm sure probably 1/3-1/2 the charges amassed at an airport are being paid by people with a bank account that reads $TEXAS or being handled by some sort of "corporate card"... In this cases, the balances are paid off without much scrutiny, so why not take advantage of low hanging fruit..

It sucks, but that's what happens when capitalism has 50+ years of evolution behind it.
