Top Chef Las Vegas

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

I was rather happy to see Jessie go after the quickfire. She had been floundering quite a bit. And how freaking awesome for Kevin to get to sit with all those chefs!

Next week looks like it will be entertaining for sure. Is it bad that I'm hoping Ashley or Michael I made the dish that Tom really really dislikes??

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

By the end, I'll bet he was wishing he could have cooked something that they loved, rather than hearing praise for others.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. It's a Catch-22, IMO. What a great opportunity to sit with them, but how awesome would it be to cook for them?

I did love how he dodged the questions from the other Chefs in the Stew Room at the end though. "What was their favorite?" "Uhh... I don't know." Haha.

That was exactly the conversation we had at my apartment. Also, I bet the judges told him to not say anything to the others when he went back in there.

There is the plus he dodged an elimination round. He's a solid cook and I doubt he would have ended up in the bottom 2, but all it takes is one slip up and your out. Another week alive is another step closer to the finals. Plus he got an advantage of tasting the other's cooking, which might help him in future team challanges.

Hector got screwed - Frenchie should have been sent home.

If Michael I (whom I don't care for) did nothing in the team challenge why did Bryan feel it necessary to say he felt guilty for winning by himself?

btw - when did Joe Pesci become a world-renowned French chef? :D

For the same reason his brother thought he and Michael I should be judged as a team last week, even though being a team was not one of the requirements of the challenge?

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

It was Jessie's turn to go. She never showed a strong dish.
Hector was the surprise. But he couldn't even carve the beef and that was the last straw for him.

Mike I. has only shown he knows how to pick a teammate. Time for him to put his skills up front, rather than his mouth.

That was his first setback and I highly doubt he got where he was by not being able to carve beef - the mistake was time management. That said, compare that to the fact that Frenchie couldn't star in a French challenge and admitted, "I haven't made this dish in a while", which rendered a roll of the eyes from Tom. Frenchie should have gone.

For the same reason his brother thought he and Michael I should be judged as a team last week, even though being a team was not one of the requirements of the challenge?

This doesn't make sense as a response to my point. The fact is Bryan indicated Michael I did contribute to the final product and he was the one directly involved.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Hector did deep fry a steak @ Wolfgang's place when he was going for a smokey essence - which I would call a mistep.

He claimed that was something they do back home, but you're right that wasn't a great moment. That said I think a Frenchman failing a French challenge is far more glaring.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Definitely not a good sign for someone. :)

The statement during the tasting indicating past season's contestants would not have had as much success in that challenge was interesting.
Yeah - I'm looking forward to it (almost as much as the doughnut throwing from earlier this season).

I agree that was an interesting statement. I'm curious as to what contestants from previous seasons think.

Michael I. continues to appear as if he's riding coattails. His contribution was the sauce, which Bryan explained to him how to do. How amazing of a sauce would MI or Jen had to have made to actually win the Elimination Challenge? There was little to no chance the sauce was beating the protein.
I agree wholeheartedly on Mike I. I can't imagine how lucky he must have thought he was when he saw the Brothers V. show up that first day.

By the end, I'll bet he was wishing he could have cooked something that they loved, rather than hearing praise for others.
While I agree with this, what a great chance to hobnob with these chefs and to talk to them and get to know them.

I agree. His whole schtick has been French cooking and playing up that he's French (the red neck-scarf [note, that's not redneck scarf :p], the explanation of the dish in French...). I don't think Hector produced a good meal at all, but his specialty isn't related to French cooking. I think he got the boot due to consistent bad work.

Thoughts on this episode:
Not sure why the chefs got a second chance round...but whatever.

Crying again this episode - Kevin's face when he realized that he was going to be eating with his heroes was adorable. "I own every book he's ever written, including the ones in French, and I don't even speak French" actually made me tear up a little.

What an incredible company to be cooking for, I'd be crying and terrified.

If Ron is trained in classical French, why has he only made Caribbean food?

Eli's reaction is awesome, "he might not actually exist and is possibly a Unicorn." (or something along those lines) :)

My hands would be shaking so badly trying to serve any food to that panel of diners.

Mattin is a show off

oooh -- Brian's face was displeased about Mike taking credit for the sauce

Brian is SOOOO LUCKY!

Not a Mattin fan after that episode...way to throw the partner under the bus and not take responsibility.

I think it did tangentially, but I was mainly making fun of how Michael I. has teamed up with the brothers the last two weeks (aren't all of them friends, or is it just the two Michaels?), and both times they seemed to have a much greater influence on the quality of the dishes. They don't match perfectly, but they have some relations.

And I, at least, wasn't saying he did nothing in the team challenge, just that Bryan was much more influential on the finished product, where he did the protein and explained to Michael I. how to deconstruct the sauce since he had done it before.

I look forward to seeing what Michael I. can do on his own, hopefully, next week. The first week was the only real time we've gotten to see them cook solo dishes, and his dish came off well there.

Fair enough and you make good points.

Eli is really funny.

Tom called it too, can't think Mattin is long for the show. From Tom's blog:

"I will note that I respect Ashley for not throwing Mattin under the bus when he lied about this at the Judge’s Table … and I think viewers will lose respect for Mattin for lying."

BTW, I think nuking a chef in the QF was a direct result of Mike I's. throw-a-way shrimp salad the previous week and sent a not-so-subtle message: Everything you make counts....

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Man, when I go to a place with fire pits, I want to have raw fish cooked with acid. Mmm mmm good. I certainly wouldn't want something cooked on the grill. No sirree.

Fun to see some new blood in the top four this week.
