Top Chef Las Vegas

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

What was with the omnipresent red neckerchief, anyway? Was it a symbol or something?

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

It's so hard not to read this thread until after I watch the episode.

Happy to see the Frenchmen gone. After throwing his partner under the bus for something that was his error and then serving raw (and potentially inedible) fish...yeah, can't say I'm sad or surprised. I am surprised that Robin has hung around as long as she has as I haven't been that impressed with her food either. I think she has been getting by with not being THE worst, but consistently bad. Happy to see some new faces in the top 4. I like that Laurene stated she's going to cook how she wants to and be comfortable doing it; I think previous seasons have shown that the best dishes are put forward that way.

I was surprised that no one tried to make a soup out of the cactus given it's "slimy" texture. Sounds like it would give you a lot of natural juice and flavor to work with (nb: I've never cooked with cactus).

Any sign of everyman? I'd love to get his read on this season and some of the dishes.

Also, very much looking forward to Pen and Teller next week. Not so much the return of Toby Young. Been following him outside of the Top Chef realm and am not that impressed.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Raw fish in the desert--seems uncommonly inappropriate.

Did somebody tell the chefs that ceviche was in for 2009? Time to eliminate it from the menu.

Either Mattin or Robin would have been a good choice for "knife packng." Except Tom threw Mattin's cod away--the kiss of death.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Ah - I try to avoid watching that (in fact, I think it might have been cut out of the video on youtube).
There's at least one thing that has to occur before she'll go. Every week I hope to see it happen. After her surviving judges' table this week, it has the potential to be next week, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I saw Eli's outburst to her, if that's what you're referring to, in a preview recently. I'd forgotten about it until just now.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Would it be mean to call Robin the cancer of this season? :D I think next week will be the week Eli blows up at her.

This episode needed to be longer and with more Penn and Teller. Overall, it was good though. Funny to see Jen hate every second of the challenge and not feel her dish is up to her standards, then get to be one of the top four.

Any of Ron, Ash, and Laurine could have gone home, but Ron's been floundering since the first episode, so that wasn't much of a shock.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Wow, do I get the dumbass of the year award. Last night I flipped on Lifetime to watch the new Project Runway, saw that it wasn't on, and went to bed. Here I was thinking the whole time it was Thursday night, not Wednesday. Top Chef didn't even register in my head. What a dope. :o  :(

Ron going home is no shock, so I guess I didn't miss much, but I will watch next WEDNESDAY @ 8:00 to catch up.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Tim - I spent yesterday thinking it was Thursday too. I only caught the show because I ran through my favorites between innings of the Twins game & have Bravo programmed in as a fav.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

I don't remember her bringing up the cancer before so I thought those criticisms were sour grape-flavored bull****. It was relevant. No one complained about the constant boat references by Ron or the I was so poor by Ashley (while not as bad off as she apparently was thanks to churches providing homes for ministers even if they only provide poverty-level wages - I get the not much meat thing - just don't see what it has to do with anything because she is grown now and cooks for a living) which has been repeated in multiple episodes.

Robin does seem to be disliked by the others - I assume from the talking though it hadn't really been shown before (atleast when I was paying attention), after last night's episode, I no longer like 2 of the contestants (in addition to those who I never liked who reinforced that dislike).

Why don't people who want to be on tv so bad watch previous seasons and practice **** in advance. I know (or assume from the no-nos that have come up in the past on Project Runway) that you can't bring notes and stuff with you, but you can learn stuff to apply even if you still have to figure out exact measurements in competition.

I would have liked to have seen more Penn and Teller as well.
Jen surprised me, I'd love to her more from her on this challenge.

While I agree with the fact that Robin hasn't mentioned cancer before in the challenges, she did mention it this time, unlike Ashley, whom I believe hasn't mentioned to the judges that she grew up poor. As to Ron, he did mention it and Tom sort of brushed it aside as not really relevant to the challenge. In this case, Robin based her dish around having had cancer. Was it a play for sympathy? Probably. Did is work? Yes. I didn't like it, but I can't fault her for using whatever advantages she has.

Thoughts on this episode:
1) I really like Eli. I like him more and more each episode (though I'd like to see more time spent on his food - I feel like we see way more about Kevin, Mike I, and the Voltaggios than Eli. Not that I'm complaining about seeing their food, but I'd like to see other contestants as well).

2) The return of Toby Young. I'm not sure how I feel about his return to Top Chef. In the offseason, I followed Toby on twitter and read some of his articles in several British papers. I'm not that impressed with the angry Brit act anymore. I find him to be a perpetual complainer with not much to offer in the way of constructive criticism.

3) Mike V. has a great command of food. The way it goes well together, ways to play with it, plate it. Really really really impressive.

4) Jen's lack of confidence in this challenge was really surprising. She has a great presence in the kitchen and really works well with different cuisines, I was really shocked to see her so unnerved. Good to see that her hard work was rewarded though.

5) I'm happy to see Ashley's food improving. I'm on the fence about whether or not I like her, but I do like to see contestants improve steadily from challenge to challenge.

6) I love Kevin's food and attitude; I like him on the whole.

7) I thought this was a particularly tough judges table with both Michelle and Toby. Not that I don't agree with their decisions (I do, in fact, agree with both and with the way the best and worsts broke down), but they're very harsh critics.

8) I do wonder though if having eaten at Kevin's restaurant prejudiced her opinion any...

9) There was an awful lot of glare off the heads of Toby and Tom in that panning shot behind the judges... :p

Also, anyone know what happened to everyman? I'd love to get his take on this season...

Being 41 sucks. The other night I made some sandwhiches for the next day, left them on the counter, and went to bed. :o

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

I KNEW IT!

That blue dress she wears in the promo just looked too big for her "normal" size...I said this to the bf about 5 weeks ago when I first saw that!
