TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

....
One other point is that Jack did not perform in the time of massive "media" (I use the term lightly) intrusion into the personal lives of celebrities. I do believe he was a great family man (and I also believed that about Tiger Woods until a few weeks ago). Jack could have cheated on his wife while on tour and nobody would have talked about it had they known. E.g., compare JFK's coverage with Bill Clinton's. And we know some of the historical greats were definitely party animals. Walter Hagen anyone?.

some truth to this... Arnie had 'friends' when he was on the road and left Winnie at home. but then the reporters were friends with the players, hung out with them on the road and ate & drank together. so that didn't come out and arnie, through his personality, became loved by all and THE model corporate spokesperson.

people also wore suits to ball games and didn't heckle (unless you were of color and were cursed at unmercifully)

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

I disagree that Tigress will come back stronger than ever. How could he? How could anybody after this kind of debacle?

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

The PGA wants and needs Tiger out there playing. TV numbers increase by 100% when he's in the hunt on Saturday and Sunday. Millions of people (I'm one of 'em) don't play golf and generally don't give a rip about the "Greater East Overshoe Open," but when Tiger's there, ahhh, that's different. Some of 'em doubtless want to see Tiger get his butt kicked, but they're watching.

Any tournament he enters has a stamp of approval no amount of money can buy. This guy has dominated his "sport" (that's another argument for another day) like practically no one has. The one exception might be the Babe, who not only saved baseball, but changed it forever. It's a real short list: Tiger and Babe.

In any discussion of who should be favored in any tournament he's in, the TV guys always say "Tiger," then they hunt around for someone else to mention. It's always the same. This season, coming off a surgical knee, how many did he win? Was it 6 or 7? No matter. Nobody else won more than 2.

So now the question is his future. Is his "standing down" real or just a publicity stunt? And is it temporary? And if he returns will he still be Tiger?Only time will tell us how sincere he is here (and maybe not even then, given his penchant for privacy). Photo ops of him and his family won't quiet the cynicism, and I don't know what will. Even so, I can't imagine he'll stay out of the game for good or even an entire season, for that matter.

Some will suggest he ought to give up golf because of his bad behavior. Why? Would we expect anyone else in any other line of endeavor to give up his career under these circumstances? No. So why should Tiger?

Then the question becomes, when he returns will he still "be" Tiger? To me, what has always been scary about this guy is his unparalled competitiveness. We've all seen him, many times in fact, just will himself to make a shot and win a tournament. I'm betting his drive to win will remain in tact and be augmented by a desire to restore his place in golf. And the way to do that is by playing and winning.

This guy is a true prodigy. The combination of immense talent, the perfect physique, and unbelievable competitiveness all honed to razor sharpness by his father. Early in his career, when we still talked about his race, there was a lot of talk about Tiger's success pointing the way for other black kids to be sucessful. Well, I hope so, but guys like Tiger come along once a generation.
And while his success may open the doors for other black kids to take up the game, maybe play for their high schools, possibly get a college scholarship and then maybe turn pro. None of that is predictive of another Tiger.

So, I think he'll return, sooner rather than later, and he'll still be Tiger. Some will never forgive him. But most will. And the PGA will do everything to protect him while he's out there. Because what's good for Tiger's bottom line is good for theirs.

gillette will no longer air ads with tiger. (that's one down - since gatorade had made the decision pre-thanksgiving. )

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

He might come back and play at the same level, but his fanbase is going to be way smaller.

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

I'll bet Tiger wins a major next year

I'll bet almost anything that he'll play The Masters and win. The media would turn so fast and the Tiger Love fest would continue.

I saw on CNN that Tiger has a court order to block the release of nude photos. W.T.F is going to happen next?

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

Jack competed against these players that won majors during his tenure: Watson, Arnie, Player, Trevino, Seve, Irwin, Miller, Floyd and Zoeller. In addition, Jack placed second in I think around 16 majors. The modern game imho doesn't have a similar list of mutliple winners and I can't agree that it's because Tiger was that much better than the competition nor that the competition is stronger. And unlike Tiger, Jack didn't have to have a lead going into Sunday in order to win. It might not be a slam dunk argument, but I still think Jack competed against more top flight players but I can see the other side of the coin has merit.

A couple of things: Tiger's not done yet (we assume) so by the time he IS finsihed there will doubtless be some additional multiple winners. Tiger's about 5 years ahead of Jack's pace in winning majors. Barring accident or illness (or this current business) it seems likely that by the time he's 38 he'll have 18 majors and more. Remember what they did at Augusta after Tiger recorded that huge win? They lengthened some holes. That requires a special kind of talent. Can't say for sure, but I don't recall any course modifications to keep Jack from dominating. And IMO there's way more talent out there from top to bottom, which would account for the major wins being spread out so much.

Finally, your reference to "Jack didn't have to have a lead going into Sunday to win," references one of the most useless statistics ever: "Tiger's only come from behind X number of times." So what? If you're winning by 5 shots after 54 holes, you don't need to come from behind! Makes it all very exciting to have an Arny "charge" on the final round, but it all comes out the same, doesn't it?

There's no way to prove that, on the whole, players are better today than they were 30 years ago. But they're better in every other sport, so why should golf be different?

This is a classic "winter stove league" argument, and I in no way mean any disrespect to Nicklaus, who at worst is the second greatest player of all time.

Just remember a very young Tiger Woods putting that list of Jack's majors up in his bedroom, so that he could know what his goal was. With anybody else it would be chalked off as youthful bravado--not this guy.

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

As in lots of sports, it is really difficult to compare different eras. Jack had his time and was clearly the best. Tiger has his and is likewise the best. One might look at their respective scores playing the same courses years apart-but there again you run into the argument about the equipment being improved in modern times. This is one reason that stats can be used to prove just about anything you want.

Ali once said the same thing about Joe Louis (although I think he was being generous): "he's the best in his era, I'm the best in mine." BTW, doesn't Tiger still have the record low score against par in all four majors?

As I say, classic sports argument, about two incredibly talented players.
The guy I always thought should have gotten more consideration for "the greatest ever" was Snead. He didn't do as well in the majors, but still has that record for career victories.

Once saw him interviewed by Jack Whitaker. Sammy was in his 60's and said his physical conditioning helped him stay competitive. He gave a demonstration, first he bent over with knees locked and touched the BACK OF HIS HANDS ON THE GROUND. Then he told Whitaker to hold a hand as high over his head as possible and Sammy KICKED IT. That kind of flexibility in anyone is remarkable, let alone a guy in his 60's.

OP - like I said I think arguments can be made for either side but I still lean a bit toward Jack facing stiffer competition but that's not meant as a slight of Tiger in any way. Good discussion either way.

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

some items...

--bobby jones said of jack, "he plays a game of which i am not familiar" before (obviously) jack paraphrase him to compliment tiger.

--it was mentioned earlier how there is no heckling in golf, and if someone tried it, stevie would kill them (and don't dismiss tiger hiring a group of goons [maybe 8-10] to follow him around and keep people quiet when he does return  ), but jack put up with people yelling during his swing and many "fat jack!" calls along with other weight related barbs during rounds because he was stealing tournaments from arnie.

--sam snead was perhaps the cheapest man ever. back then they had to play outside a lot to earn a living (monday events, local side tourneys, etc). he would pay everyone with checks, caddies - whatnot, in the hope that they would rather keep it for the autograph than cash it. many who wanted the money instead and went to the bank found that it bounced.

--i saw an interview with earnest bourgnine recently. they ask him how he stays so active being so old. he told them he shouldn't say, but when pressed leaned in and said, "i masterbate.... a lot!!" :D

Yup. However, Tiger's got a lot of work to do to repair his reputation, it's not at all certain he can do it.

I remember my old man saying the same thing (more or less) about Snead. Remember that old show where two guys would play a round and the winner came back the next week and played somebody else? Can't remember who hosted the thing. I do remember Snead got on there and it took about an entire season to get him off.

Somebody's gonna be covering Tiger's azz when he returns. Tournament sponsors, PGA, Tiger himself, whoever. But you're absolutely right. It will definitely be "on your best behavior or outta here" in the galleries.

I saw that interview with "McHale," and immediately set out to verify his results. :D

i predict tigress will not win an nba title ever:rolleyes:

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

What money grubbers? People need a life if they get all wrapped up in Tiger the person. Tiger the golfer is entertainment, just like all athletes. Off the field, they're just like anyone else, some dopes, some not.
