Got to agree with Old Pio here. The sheer number, and proportion, of truly outstanding golfers is amazing right now (and they all are playing with the same equipment ... just like always). Sure the equipment is very different from Jack's prime time, but so are the courses ... some of which simply could not have been played with the old equipment.
One other point is that Jack did not perform in the time of massive "media" (I use the term lightly) intrusion into the personal lives of celebrities. I do believe he was a great family man (and I also believed that about Tiger Woods until a few weeks ago). Jack could have cheated on his wife while on tour and nobody would have talked about it had they known. E.g., compare JFK's coverage with Bill Clinton's. And we know some of the historical greats were definitely party animals. Walter Hagen anyone?
I've been around tournament golf for longer than I care to admit and I don't think this will end Tiger's golf career (endorsements, maybe). In fact, once he resolves this either by picking up the pieces and putting his family back together or by divorcing and moving on, I'll predict that he comes back stronger than ever. He might even have fewer distractions given fewer endorsements and not having to spend so much time maintaining a false image. He has the mental capabilities to put his family back together (Elin will have to find out if he has the physical capabilities!
) and he has the mental and physical capabilities to rip the tour apart if he gets back on track with a deeper focus. I don't think he'll be done until the majors and overall wins records are firmly in his pocket. I agree with a quiet arrival at the Masters after a lot of practice ... they are used to covering up controversies!
I could also see one warmup tournament before that in Europe or Asia to get the initial media circus out of the way. This announcement might be as much "get off my back" as anything else.
Sorry for going on so long.
