The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

I think Denver should be in the Top 2, but I may be a little biased.:D

IMO, the 1961 Denver squad might be the best of all-time. When you look at how they destroyed teams...it was impressive. Of course, the teams that are #1 and #2 have great arguments for that title as well.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

It was just as fun for me, but you are welcome.

I think it was pretty obvious that we would be left with these two squads to fight over the #1 spot. I was hoping to put some doubt into minds with some comments that I made earlier. :)

Once this is done you should rank the 25 worst teams in the NCAA era.:D;)

You know, at one point (years ago) I had people nominate teams that they wanted to rank as the worst. I believe I only received 2 or 3 nominations, so it didn't go so well. I want to say there was a Merrimack team that finished with -50 points or so, while an old RPI team finished with about -45 or so.

Eventually, I will have every team that ever made the NCAA Tournament ranked, so I could do the worst teams to ever make the NCAA Tournament. It would probably just be a thread on here, as I doubt CHW would want to drum up support by how bad teams were.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Can someone expand on the recruiting disagreement between Denver and UMinn? How long did it last? How could the WCHA permit it to alter a balanced schedule?

Oh please take this one off-line. I can't handle another JDUBBS and mariucci lecture-fest. :)

The RPI team was the 65-66 one.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

We already mentioned the 70-71 Gopher squad as well. Not so good, but made it to the title game.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Many critics believe the 1978-1979 Minnesota team to be the best of all time. Why? Many players on that team were the catalyst of the 1980 Miracle on ice team. Without them USA hockey likely would have never grown as fast after the 1980 Olympics.

You could argue that they were perhaps the most important college team, but I think the BU squads from that time could argue the same thing. Of course, one could make an argument that the '79 North Dakota team was better than that Gopher team as well, as the Sioux won the WCHA that season, and fell in the title game by a goal.

BTW, #1 and #2 should be published shortly...

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Since Northern Mich. made the top five I'm curious how 90-91 BU Terriers fared in the ranking. I didn't see them listed in the thread, yet.

As for the worst teams of all time, I'm sure reliable data would be hard to come by since the schools in question wouldn't be too interested in promoting those teams.

I thought the "worst" was not "worst of all time" overall but merely "worst teams to make the tournament"?

For example, hypothetically, if this year's Rensselaer team somehow gets hot and wins the ECAC tournament, they might be in the NCAAs with a score of -60 using FS23's formula, making them the worst of the worst in this particular measure. By no means would you consider this year's Rensselaer team the worst of all teams ever, no matter how bad a year it's been, given that there are teams that did not win a single game.

#1 and #2 released...

Also, here is the final leaderboard...

Hopefully everyone enjoyed the ride!

Also, I'll try to answer any and all questions as best I can.

The momentum seemed to switch with the new goalie. Early in the third, Kariya found Montgomery open, and Tim buried the puck to put Maine within 1.

Who is Tim? :p

FS23,
Is the list of how many points each of the top 25 teams received on line somewhere?
