The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

So may I ask, where were the following teams ranked:
1964-65 Michigan Tech
1973-74 Minnesota
1974-75 Michigan Tech
1975-76 Minnesota

Where would Minnesota/Michigan Tech be ranked if the opposite team had won the NC those 3 seasons?

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

FS23,
Is the list of how many points each of the top 25 teams received on line somewhere?

There will be eventually. I believe they are going to have the top 100 teams of all-time w/points when I am done finishing the rest of the teams.

Here is the list of the Top 25 w/point values...

1. 1992-1993 Maine - 314.3307
2. 1969-1970 Cornell - 244.61
3. 1960-1961 Denver - 243.7658
4. 1986-1987 North Dakota - 233.8107
5. 1990-1991 Northern Michigan - 229.6944
6. 2008-2009 Boston University - 227.0232
7. 1976-1977 Wisconsin - 226.5776
8. 1984-1985 RPI - 213.5499
9. 1961-1962 Michigan Tech - 212.8708
10. 1997-1998 Michigan State - 211.5676
11. 1977-1978 Boston University - 210.0053
12. 1968-1969 Cornell - 206.6362
13. 2004-2005 Denver - 206.428
14. 1967-1968 Denver - 204.7811
15. 1966-1967 Cornell - 203.6961
16. 1955-1956 Clarkson - 203.691
17. 2003-2004 North Dakota - 201.94
18. 1980-1981 Minnesota - 200.2411
19. 1995-1996 Michigan - 197.7472
20. 2000-2001 Boston College - 192.2315
21. 2010-2011 North Dakota - 192.042
22. 1955-1956 Michigan - 191.7456
23. 1979-1980 North Dakota - 189.704
24. 1970-1971 Boston University - 187.5563
25. 1994-1995 Boston University - 187.341

Just missed the cut...(all within 1 point of #25)
26. 2007-2008 Michigan - 187.3406
27. 2004-2005 Colorado College - 187.337
28. 1959-1960 Denver - 187.2773

1964-1965 Michigan Tech is currently #75.
1973-1974 Minnesota is currently #270.
1974-1975 Michigan Tech is currently #85.
1975-1976 Minnesota is currently #284.

1973-1974 Michigan Tech would have been #53 had they won. They are actually #92.
1974-1975 Minnesota would have been #72 had they won. They are actually #108.
1975-1976 Michigan Tech would have been #62 had they won. They are actually #98.

Interesting. It looks like the majority of the clubs in the 25 had a Canadian dominated roster or in the eyes of Happy an overage Canadian roster. ;)

True. Of course, if we looked at the majority of teams ever, we would probably see the same trend. Canadians play hockey. :)

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

It was interesting to notice that the distribution of the top 25 teams across "eras" did come fairly close to the distribution of all championship teams across "eras."

Era

Code:
A	1948 - 1976	four teams
B	1977 five teams
B	1978 six teams
B	1979 - 1980	five teams
C	1981 - 1987	eight teams
D	1988 - 2002	twelve teams
E	2003 - 2011	sixteen teams

Code:
	ALL NCAA DIV I CONTEST
A	29	45.3% 10	40.0%
B	4	6.3% 2	8.0%
C	7	10.9% 3	12.0%
D	15	23.4% 6	24.0%
E	9	14.1% 4	16.0%
	64 25

I'm glad it worked out as well as it did. I guess that shows that my tweak wasn't too bad. What will be interesting, is to see how many new teams are able to jump into the top 25, and how well the formula keeps up through time.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

a minor curiosity, regarding teams with really high average margin of victory,

'59-'60 Denver, something absurd like + 5.3 per game
'51-'52 Rensselaer, with its 8.2 average goal per game and + 4.9 per game

Really enjoyable thread FS23, though I would love to see the formula, I have a hard time believing that Maine was as much better than Cornell as Cornell was better than #25. I can totally buy that they're the greatest team ever, but only incrementally, nothing really says to me that they're that far an away the best. Either way, Maine's a worthy champion, and this thread a worthy endeavor. It was fun!

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

I see my strategy of pessimism for old teams and ECAC teams paid off.

Many thanks FS23 for all the work that went into this.

I am curious about a couple more teams:
89-90 Wisconsin
UMD's best team (probably 84-85?)
Northern Michigan's second best team

Seeing Northern Michigan at #5 made me wonder who had the biggest gap from their best team to their next-best team. Probably Bowling Green but I bet NMU is up there too.

It really has to do with the extra games Maine played. If you look at the formula from a points/game viewpoint, the two are significantly closer (essentially tied). Had Cornell played 45 games, they would likely have been significantly closer (if not ahead). That being said, it was definitely interesting seeing such a large separation when the rest of the teams are so tightly bunched (for the most part).

1959-1960 Denver came in just outside the top 25 at #28 (about .07 points away from #25).

I don't have my computer with the formula on it handy right now, but I should in a bit. I'll post about '51-'52 RPI at that point.

EDIT: I have not rated 1951-1952 RPI as they did not make the NCAA Tournament. I can rank them, but it will be when I have ranked all the NCAA Tournament teams first.

DOUBLE EDIT: I went through and rated '51-'52 RPI team because it was easy to find the information needed. They came in at #221 w/84.9622 points.

1989-1990 Wisconsin is currently #35.
UMD's best team is that 1984-1985 squad. They are currently #39. If Duluth were to go on a run and win out this year, it is possible that they could top #39.
NMU's second best team (that I have ranked so far) was the 1979-1980 squad. They are currently #51.

As for the biggest gap from team's in the top 25...
Maine: #1 (92-93) to #38 (94-95)
Cornell: #2 (69-70) to #12 (68-69)
Denver: #3 (60-61) to #13 (04-05)
North Dakota: #4 (86-87) to #17 (03-04)
Northern Michigan: #5 (90-91) to #51 (79-80)
BU: #6 (08-09) to #11 (77-78)
Wisconsin: #7 (76-77) to #35 (89-90)
RPI: #8 (84-85) to #113 (83-84)
Tech: #9 (61-62) to #75 (64-65)
Michigan State: #10 (97-98) to #29 (88-89)
Clarkson: #16 (55-56) to #94 (65-66)
Minnesota: #18 (80-81) to #49 (82-83)
Michigan: #19 (95-96) to #22 (55-56)

Obviously, there are more teams that need to be ranked, so this may not be final, but it looks like right now RPI has the biggest gap between their #1 and #2 teams.

I didn't realize that Mo Mansi and John Tiano were so important. :p

Seriously, that's by position. Maine could win on gap measured in points.

Why would you not look at the teams from a points-per-game viewpoint as part of equalizing between different eras when there were different standards in place for how many games teams could play?

That was part of the tweak. I'm not saying that was the only reason why Maine had more points. Maine was more dominant in their season than Cornell, especially against stronger competition.
