The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Your formula doesn't take tradition into account. It's flawed.

It's deja vu all over again....I seem to recall this very same converation in "The Greatest Programs" thread.....and there, we amicably resolved it simply by saying, "come up with a good formula to measure tradition, then collect the data and apply the formula, after which we can then add the results to the rest of FS23's formula once we determine proper weighting." ;)

IIRC, we even had some good ideas for a measure that might be acceptable....

of course, expecting certain people to be amicable is perhaps too much to ask!

Also, any Minnesota champion is 40 times as good as any BC one and 7 times as good as any Sioux title. Just trying to keep it real.

Obviously. It's all tied into what I call the "Minnesota Multiplier"...The Sioux get more points just because we're a whole lot closer to Minnesota than BC. That being said, if BC were to win a title IN Minnesota...that would be worth a ridiculous amount of points...

You missed a few.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

You missed a few.

The formula ranks all the teams that made the NCAA Tournament. As a result the only schools ranked are those that have made NCAA Tournaments (Wayne State not included as they are no longer a program, but their '02-'03 squad is part of the 540 teams ranked).

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

That's OK. I put them in for you.;)

Thanks. :p:D:D

Of course, I'm not really sure if there have been 5115 D-1 teams in the NCAA era. (BTW, this is a number that I wouldn't mind knowing because if it was manageable, I just might put some time and effort into ranking every team during the era)

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

In looking at the past 10 years, here are the cumulative totals of the teams that made the NCAA Tournament:
2011-2012 - 1,252.2030 points
2010-2011 - 1,285.2401 points
2009-2010 - 1,164.9505 points
2008-2009 - 1,191.6962 points
2007-2008 - 1,286.6387 points
2006-2007 - 1,139.4843 points
2005-2006 - 1,269.3956 points
2004-2005 - 1,457.3146 points
2003-2004 - 1,362.0467 points
2002-2003 - 1,408.1737 points

Those numbers would seem to indicate that the 2004-2005 season was the best field for the NCAA Tournament, while 2006-2007 was the weakest.

Here are how the years rank in terms of the "Average" NCAA Team:
1. 2004-2005 - 91.0822 points
2. 2002-2003 - 88.0109 points
3. 2003-2004 - 85.1279 points
4. 2007-2008 - 80.4149 points
5. 2010-2011 - 80.3275 points
6. 2005-2006 - 79.3372 points
7. 2011-2012 - 78.2627 points
8. 2008-2009 - 74.4810 points
9. 2009-2010 - 72.8094 points
10. 2006-2007 - 71.2178 points

Obviously, all numbers and assumptions are made from looking at the formula. If I get time, I may look at the other "eras" of college hockey (i.e. 12-team tourney era, 8-team tourney era, 4-team tourney era), and see which years had the most difficult fields.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

I've been tinkering around with some of the tools that were left behind after College Hockey Weekly shutdown, and one thing I did was modify their "Predictor" so that I could use it to pit two squads from different seasons against each other and simulate a game. As a result, I have been debating about using it to have some sort of quasi-fictional tournament between the top 100 teams on my list.

Basically, I would give the top 28 teams on the list a "Bye" in the first round, and then start pairing up the remaining teams. So for example, The 29th Best team (1959-1960 Denver) would square off against the 100th Best Team (2002-2003 New Hampshire). The winner would take on the winner from the 36th best team (1989-1990 Wisconsin)-93rd Best team (1973-1974 Michigan Tech). the #1 Team (1992-1993 Maine) would match up against the winner of the 64th Best Team (1990-1991 Maine)-65th Best Team (1981-1982 North Dakota) match.

Anyway, if people are interested, I'll put a little more work into it and maybe post brackets over at CHW. If not, then I won't waste my time. :)

I will predict that a North Dakota team will win ;)

I can't wait for Jim Archibald to beat the crap out of Kariya for stealing Greg Johnson's Hobey!
