Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

I've heard DocD make references to this back when the ECAC used a "mini-game" to decide playoff series back in the '80s.

RPI beat Colgate in the first game of the 1987 playoffs 9-1 and was losing the second game. Since there would be a mini-game immediately following if RPI lost and the series was split, Addessa pulled the goalie and just peppered Colgate with shots without caring if they scored an empty netter (or 3). RPI ended up losing the game 7-2 and then won the mini-game 2-0 to advance to the semis against Harvard.

Your recap is exactly on the money. I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember thinking how foolish it was to try. Goes to show what the heck do I know.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Has anyone mentioned Bemidji State's Perfect Season which I think still holds the NCAA Record 1983-1984 season with a 31-0 record

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming this Top 25 ranking is of Division I schools. Bemidji State of '83 -'84 was a DII program.

Correct. I could do that particular Bemidji State season, but I'm not sure if it would be fair to rank it against Division 1 seasons. Plus, there are probably a lot of pieces of data that would be difficult (read: near impossible) to find without major help.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Their non-conference opponents were not all that stellar. Additionally, the WCHA was not all that great in 01-02. Those two factors, along with the fact that they were under .800, and failed to win either of the WCHA trophies kept that Gopher squad out of the top 25.

So the team that finished 3rd in a supposed weak conference with one NC loss against a conference opponent won it all with a better overall record than several teams in the top 25? ;)

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

new chances:
Bumpreader 50%
css228 33%
statehockey 17%

I'm not even going to fight it, I'm totally riding the scoring system here, which seems to benefit those who get a high proportion of teams exactly right and those who get teams right close to the top.

Well, if Cornell is # 1 and Maine is # 2 you win! * Otherwise bumpreader wins. Either way, nicely done.

Looks like Moxie Girl would be 2nd and I'd be 3rd this way, didn't bother to check the other way.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Thanks to FS23 for an interesting sojourn through Men's NCAA division I college hockey history as well. It was fun. :)

Appreciate the time effort and thoughtfulness involved.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Interestingly (well maybe not), in either case RPI beat the winner the following season, and if Cornell wins, we also beat them the previous season.

It was just as fun for me, but you are welcome.

I think it was pretty obvious that we would be left with these two squads to fight over the #1 spot. I was hoping to put some doubt into minds with some comments that I made earlier. :)

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

I think Denver should be in the Top 2, but I may be a little biased.:D

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Perhaps it's the passage of time, but judging from the team picture, the Pios appeared to be a "mature" bunch.

Yeah, college players sure do look differently. When my grandpa passed away last month, we were looking at some of his WWII photos. In his enlistment photo, he was 17, but looked about 30 by today's measures.
