Why did they pick a town that averages 44 degrees and rain every day in February to host the Winter Olympics?

The same reason the IOC picks any site: Villas, yachts, luxury cars, stocks & bonds, gemstones, and just big old bags of cash. :)

To whom it may concern, hockey kicks off now on CNBC with Kim Martin in net (former bulldog I believe they just said).

I suppose NBC's lawyers have mopped up any video there may be online of the torch malfunction?

I don't know, they keep talking about it every chance they get though.

Gretzky said they had ear-pieces and could hear the producer direct the show, so they were well aware of what was happening (contrary to the confused look he first shot the cameras).

Ok, I know I didn't fully pay attention to the Ski-Jumping, but they're still in the process of airing the 2nd round of jumps... why does it show on my iPod app that the Swiss won gold, Poland 2nd, and Austria third. Did I miss the medal ceremony though?

Or is NBC airing tape delayed?

They are showing the ski jumping on tape delay. It happened this morning.

They are just bridging time before they head back to the live speed skating for the top men in the 5000m and the Americans.

THAT's a very good question.

Apparently Sochi has a very similar climate. So we may get a repeat of this snafu in 2014.

Wait a fricken minute, the IOC put a Winter Olympics in a city where it rarely drops below 42.8 degrees and February has an average temperature of 41 degrees.

...

Epic Fail.

We're all just so shocked and saddened that this boy lost his life, it seems venal to suggest that he played a role in this tragedy. I understand that, and agree completely.

I would imagine the sliding federations will review every major track in the world, to see if it's even possible this kind of catastrophic accident can occur, and where safety measures can be applied to guard against it.

Sadly, as always, these retro-active changes will come too late for the person who showed the necessity of making them.

The thing is, the luge is a dangerous event... period... you're sliding down feet first in a sled down a tube of ice. I hope this doesn't turn into a "lets put pads on everybody" type of thing... but to have a pole to slam into?!?! what the heck?

I like how NBC didn't even make it to the first event before going to a tape delay. Good work, guys.

Also, two further points:

1. Jim Gray needs to go away. Few people on tv are more unlikeable.

2. For every time NBC plays that ****ty "We are the World" remake, I am going to steal a dollar from a Haitian.

Yup. It will be Vancouver with Borscht, except a little warmer.

If minnesota wasn't as flat as day old beer it would be a perfect place for the winter olympics

You've put your finger on it exactly. So many people are having an instinctual, gut level response: GD it, we can't let this happen again. But there's only so much danger you can wring out of these sliding events. And in some cases, the particular danger is so remote, so unlikey that it's not reasonable to plan for it. Even with the changes on this track (and I assume others) there is still danger lurking and some unfortunate soul may also lose his life.

I've been in an Olympic downshill start house and at the top of what's now referred to as a "normal" hill for ski jumping. Just writing these words makes me weak in the knees. On the downhill, you're about a mile up in the air, on the top of a mountain for cripes sakes, and facing a 42 degree incline coming out of the chute. Pass! And doing what those jumpers do requires nads the size of voit volleyballs. In my days at DU we had a jumper representing the US and during a training run he was caught by a gust of wind and thrown into the stands--and put into a wheel chair. They closed the hill after his accident--one jumper too late.

US fails to medal in mens 5000m. But they should have a better shot in the shorter races. Dude from Netherlands is favored in the 10000m after winning the 5000m. He just missed out on a medal at Torino. As soon as he knew he had the gold he ran to the stands, jumped over a few railings and up to his family. Moments like that make the olympics great.

What a disappointing 5000M by Hendrick. Defending champ and you finish 11th.
