edit: reading the SI piece posted by slap shot makes me wonder if this was one of those inertia deals, where everybody assumed somebody else would take care of the problem.

No such thing. If one person believed this was a serious danger then that person should have waved a red flag. Obviously they were going to use this track so nobody decided it was worth risking themselves over this.

Its only one of those inertia deals in that nobody thought it was worth their career.

Maybe I was too reactionary to the video. I don't know. My reaction basically went like this:

1. Oh, my God.
2. What the hell are those steel posts doing there?

And, instead of the glass bear, they should have asked Alaska to use terrorist bear.

Re: The Official Thread of the Run-Up to the XXI Olympic Winter Games, Vancouver, Canada

A lot of times engineers are people who have no idea how to actually use what they're designing. I used to work with a guy who hated engineers on hunting equipment...They'd put velcro on everything so when you went to open it, you'd scare the animal off.

As far as the video, I saw it twice on the NBC Nightly News story, I don't need to see it again. I don't think it needs to be shown. Would NBC be showing it if that were an American? A lot of networks won't show the planes going into the World Trade Center, but yet have no problems showing people getting blown up in Iraq or dead bodies all over Haiti.

So this is what it looks like when you watch Peter Pan while on acid.

They're doing the officials' Olympic oath in French.

You could cut through the irony with a butter knife.

Uh oh. Technical difficulties with the torch lighting. Someone is getting fired over this.

They have to light a second cauldron because the flame has to be visible and they lit this flame in the middle of a stadium. Good call.

Canada is definitely in the lead for the gold medal in Fail with the way they've been hosting so far.

For the record, I was wrong about Georgia pulling out. But I got that from CNN and Yahoo so I don't feel too bad about stating that.

A lot of times engineers are people who have no idea how to actually use what they're designing. I used to work with a guy who hated engineers on hunting equipment...They'd put velcro on everything so when you went to open it, you'd scare the animal off.

Then they're not engineers. Any engineer worth his weight in gold takes these things into account, especially when it comes to safety in an extremely dangerous situation. Velcro scaring off a deer is hardly a design that has to do with safety.

Even insanely rare situations are brought up in safety reviews (process hazard analysis). Times when two or three safety interlocks fail. And yes, I am an engineer so i know what I'm talking about when it comes to designing for safety.

I wasn't talking about safety with the deer analogy, they design products they don't use, not always practical it use.

Point taken. However, I would say that wasn't an engineer so much as it was a designer. Big difference between the two.
