What a disappointing 5000M by Hendrick. Defending champ and you finish 11th.

He doesn't give a rip about that distance anymore supposedly. He is all about 1500 now, which Davis will probably beat him in anyways.

Whoops, NBC going to the biathlon. What's the spoiler etiquette, factoring in that NBC is incompetent?

Re: The Official Thread of the Run-Up to the XXI Olympic Winter Games, Vancouver, Can

Why did they pick a town that averages 44 degrees and rain every day in February to host the Winter Olympics?

Vancouver is a visually spectacular, sophisticated city with big city amenities like an international airport, large hotels, stadiums, shopping and a large population to support the Games and it's in good time zone to get high broadcast fees from NBC. All the events in Vancouver proper are indoor events and weather is not a factor for those. The mountain venues are colder.

Almost every Winter Games has some weather issues - it comes with the territory.

They are showing the ski jumping on tape delay. It happened this morning.

They are just bridging time before they head back to the live speed skating for the top men in the 5000m and the Americans.
This is what I hate. And I live in a Western time zone so it's further tape delayed. For an event happening 1 time zone away!

I could fly to Vancouver (3 1/2 hours), clear customs, watch the event in person, fly home, and see it finally make TV.

At least the cable stuff is live...

I was just going to say something about NBC. What irritated me more was not that I knew the outcome but that they came in during the middle and just seemed to go away. Its pretty awful.

Id say if you dont want to spoil it (medals) wait until its been on tv to post or do recaps at the end of the night. As for prelim stuff post away...

On a note closer to home. Alaska has 7 Olympians competing. Callan Chythlook-Sislof, Snowboardcross, will be the first Native Alaskan to compete in the Olympics. Kikkan Randall, XC skiing, will be a medal favorite in the Women's sprint (which BTW is one of the most insane events, a full out sprint on skis for about a mile).

A little tricky. I just finished the Kramer/Davis round of the Men's 5000m that the results were posted for 30 minutes ago. NBC is full of win.

What I don't get is that NONE of this is online. They put **** near everything online for the summer olympics. EVERYTHING. Table tennis, air rifles, whatever. There is a fraction of the number of events in the winter games and they don't cover them? It's ridiculous.

Allegedly DTV viewers have a website they can access to get bonus coverage but I really haven't looked. They have the bandwidth to do it since they did a lot for the summer games.

Comcast has the same deal. I can watch stuff online but I've been able to watch women's hockey (which was actually on CNBC) and luge training (unfortunately... :( ) and that's it. Very frustrating.

Edit: It appears that only the biathlon was not shown so far. I thought there were other events that were missed but those times were listed as vancouver time. Hopefully there will be expanded coverage going forward.

And weather is already wreaking havoc in Skiing... Men's Downhill PPD till Monday and tomorrow's Women's DH PPD as well...

Constant rain on Cypress Mountain is also making the freestyle comp difficult... Women's Moguls is coming up tonight, and they have been constantly training in wet, drizzly conditions... Reports are saying the course is holding up to the weather however...

Hopefully the weather doesn't dampen US hopes for a medal here... Heather McPhie has won World Cups this year, along with Shannon Bahrke... And both of them were beaten by Hannah Kearney at the US Trials... Kearney is also the defending World Cup Champ as well... Some good Canadians in the field as well... A North American sweep of the podium isn't out of the question....

So...they should have put the Winter Games in Maryland?

I think the northern portions of TEXAS may have been more appropriate with the weather they've gotten recently...

Ok, so this Canada vs. Slovakia hockey game is almost humorous. So far, every time I have changed the channel gone to the bathroom or whatever I come back and canada has put up another goal, and I mean JUST put in another goal.

Edit. Holy crap. It just happened again. This is crazy.

The goalie for Slovakia plays at Bemidji State. I feel sorry for her, there's only so much she can do. The fifth Canada goal was scored after a referee blew the whistle on a penalty and they counted it anyways...

Is it wrong I like watching these kinds of games? One of the reasons I like the Olympics is because I sometimes don't want to watch a close game, I just want to sit back and watch a team run up the score. It's also why I really, really, really want the USA to be in Great Britain's pool for basketball come 2012.

I guess that explains why she's the only player on the Slovakian team doing anything. It could be 15-0 instead of 7-0 if she wasn't there.

7-0 at the end of one does tend to take the mystery out of it, eh?

I don't feel bad for her at all. She was on the team that beat another team 82-0. Candada can run up the score all they want and I won't complain.
