The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

FINLAND WINS! Saara Tuominen with the game winner on a great feed from Rantamaki. 3-2 FINAL at 2:33 of overtime.

Rantamaki waited and waited and waited and finally centered it. Replay shows that it may have gone off of Tuominen's skate, but it's going to stand.

Final shots: Finland 24, Sweden 18. Power-play: Finland 0 of 6; Sweden 2 of 5.
Scoring change on the game winner. Credit the goal to Karoliina Rantamaki, as it deflected in off of Swedish defender Erika Holst's skate (not Tuominen's).

Yeaaa Saara!!!! Congrats to team Finland and to one of the best people in the game - Saara Tuominen!!!!

Not sure it really matters but the replays they are showing up here sure looks like it was an own goal off the Swedish defenceman's skate or stick...

That's okay. Former Bulldog, current Bulldog, it's all good. :D

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

That was a sweet play by Rantamaki. A good game by both teams, but the Finns had the edge all day, I thought. They're going to be fired up when they get back to Duluth tomorrow. Hope they bring some of that mojo back from Vancouver!

:D

Yes, she's looking quite stylish. :D Any combination of maroon and gold looks good in Vancouver. Can't believe some of these ladies will be back here tomorrow to play the first round playoff games.

Guess that is another nice thing about it being in NA.

Congrats to Finland for a hard fought win. Can't wait for the puck to drop for the gold medal game. What a great day of hockey!

The latest cannonball fired over the bow of Women's Olympic Hockey by IOC...

Which is crap because it took the men's side a long, long time to be competitive, too. And today the Olympics for the men is basically an NHL All-Star tournament anyway. Can't compare that with the women's side, which IS getting more competitive.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Just had a captive audience watch the game as we are sailing back from 45 days doing relief efforts in Haiti. Have missed all but today of the Olympics due to not being in the satellite footprint. This Finland-Sweden game may have appeared on TV to be a normal female game to me it did not win over any new supporters for the female game. In fact, the consensus for tonight is to watch Canada's men’s curling.
Have said before, fully support my D but her best hockey years was when she was playing boy's. For female hockey to gain support two things must occur.
1. Body Checking
2. At least 6 counties that are on even par.

What do you mean by "gain support"? What do you want exactly?

1. Body Checking
I don't want to debate this one again.

2. At least 6 counties that are on even par.
But I'll focus on this one. How many international team sports have this quality?

Let's define "even par" as, there are 6 teams who each say have a greater than 10% change of winning and none more than 20%.

Men's hockey has this -- but it's EXCEPTIONAL in this fashion. Since the first NHL Olympics in 1998, each of the top six hockey countries has made the final exactly once. That's pretty amazing.

Can you name any other sport that has that kind of parity at its highest level?
You could argue soccer -- but Brazil, France, and Italy have accounted for 6 of the last 8 World Cup final berths. Women's soccer is close, but never seems to have six teams that are good at once, i.e. China and Norway were good and now aren't. Germany, Brazil, and Sweden are now good but weren't in the 90s.

Don't try to tell me either basketball is close to this kind of parity.

Yes, women's hockey has far less parity than the sports I just listed. It's also a lot younger. So I'm not sure what the point is of setting the bar you mentioned.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Does not look good for the Americans. Canadians are moving the puck very well and are keeping the US away from the middle of the ice. US is going to have to do something to take the momentum away and soon.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Find Vetter looking a little shakey which really surprises me. Giving up some huge rebounds. US players trying a little too hard to do it themselves. Need to get back to a passing team game and clog the front of the net or they will not beat the Canadian tender.
