The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Sports I myself participated in/played-but not in Canada. But family owns a cottage-more, in Canada since before WII and I have gone there since birth literally.

Too, I am not predicting an American win today (or Sunday) but merely that the pressure has built substantially I think with the turn of events I describe and it appears to be all on the Canadians. I follow a few Canadian players especially but am of course American-haven' t made up my mind who I will be for once the game(s) begin. Have US and Canadian flags on the tailgate of my pick up!

It will be hard to root against my own country were it to come to that.

Surely feel as many must that it is hard waiting.

Won't get an argument from me or probably any other Canadian when it comes to rallying behind your own Countries team. Hard not to, especially on the men's side when they were not even predicted to medal.

Good Luck to each of you, no matter your nationality or the team you are behind. One thing for sure...it's going to be a ring-a-ding-dong-dandy!

Anyone not cheering for their home country should be ashamed. Would expect nothing less.

Ironically, I have roots in three countries, two of them deep. When athletes or teams from those nations are competing head to head for gold, I find it a real dillemma. This actually happens occasionally in the Olympics.

I sure hope so, seeing as last night's Russia/Canada tilt fell WAY short of expectations. Sure, I'm rooting for USA, but hopefully both teams truly show up and have to work for it. I'm not a fan out shootouts either, so it hope it doesn't come to that. Perhaps a one goal win by either team, not withstanding an empty netter would make for decent drama.

Like in say...Speedskating?:) 6 medals total to date: 3 Gold, 1 Silver & 2 Bronze. I would say you as an expat must be extremely proud cause so far you really do own that podium.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Is there anywhere to watch the bronze medal game on the web??

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Three points from Olympic coverage that are bugging me --

1. Any assertion that Canada's 7-3 pre-match record is meaningful in any way

Have those covering the sport forgotten that the US went 8-0 against Canada prior to the 2002 Salt Lake Games? Or did they ever know? But that's a point worth mentioning.

And if there's any stat from the 10 head-to-head games that's worth mentioning, it's the US record and GAA against Canada with Vetter in net. By my count the US is 2-2 in regulation and then the shootout loss. Only in 1 of the 5 games was she lit up. Knowing Vetter, I don't expect that to happen again. Four Frozen Fours is enough of a sample for me to think she'll come up huge. Lack of experience didn't hurt her in 2006.

2. Any suggestion that Canada might have an advantage due to "experience" for having half as many rookies

It's not that I don't believe experience CAN be beneficial. But there's a tradeoff. There's no doubt the best place to prepare for the 2008-09 season in preparation for the 2010 Olympic Games was NCAA women's college hockey. There's no doubt that the average younger player turning 18 now is better than 4-8 years ago. The idea that experience is a cut-and-dry edge over youth in this case is pure nonsense.

Also, the idea that the only way to gain relevant experience for the Olympics is to play in the Olympics is completely ludicrous -- clearly a symptom of writers who don't recognize that the sport exists outside of these two weeks every 4 years.

Not to mention, the US and Canada hadn't played each other in a gold medal game in 8 years. If anyone believes that US-Canada experience is so important, why are we even counting 2006 as experience? Only 2002 is relevant. Let's just count holdovers from 2002 on each team. Of course this is ludicrous, but that's the point. Counting Olympic veterans is a weak proxy for relevant experience.

3. Closely related to 2, any suggestions that certain young players like the Lams are the "future of women's hockey."

No, they're much closer to being the present than the future.

It's hard to get good stats on international play since the sample size is small, but I'm guessing most US players peak in their first Olympics after they're done with US college hockey, and then it's a decline from there. The NWHL, WWHL only partially help this. They just don't have the support the NCAA has.

-- One final point, it's totally coincidental that these points are mainly pro-US and anti-Canada. I'm not searching for slights of the US team. These just happen to be common threads of analysis in the mainstream press that strike me as being totally misguided.

After one period, nobody is on the board yet... Finland 0, Sweden 0.

The best chance for either team probably came right near the end of the period by Maria Rooth of Sweden, but Noora Räty was up to the task.

I will certainly be cheering for my home country today (Team USA), but I won't be too upset if Team Canada's women take the gold. My dillemma is that us Ohio State fans are fiercely loyal to all our former Buckeyes. Lisa Chesson will be suiting up for Team USA and Tessa Bonhomme will be playing for Team Canada. How can I root against either of them?!? I feel like it's a win-win situation, actually. I'll be happy for whoever gets the gold. Can't wait to get home and turn it on.

Thanks! Do I see this right . . . Grahn in goal for team Sweden??

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

any audio streams online of the game? I'm in the US and can't get the TSN feed, and the nbc feed won't work without me signing into my cable provider, for which I have no idea what my ID is....

That's correct -- Santa's on the bench. Grahn hasn't faced many good Finnish scoring chances through the first 22 minutes.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Pelttari scores! 1-0 Finland 4:24 into the second period. Wrister glove side from the faceoff dot on Grahn's left side.

EDIT: Räty makes a save in a scramble, then rough stuff ensues. Finland's Karvinen and Räty get some jabs at Sweden's Timglas. Timglas and Karvinen penalized - slashing and roughing, respectively.

1-1. Sweden PP goal at 12:24 of the second by Maria Rooth on a tip from a shot from the point by Jordansson. The deflection went high glove side past Räty.

Mariia Posa was in the box on a tripping call (which I thought was weak, but I digress).

WOW! Was going to comment earlier during the 1st period about how well Heidi was playing. Then she scores on a great shot early in the 2nd.

Just so other folks know, Heidi is still in school after completing her eligibility for hockey, but was eligible play in other sports. So decided to play for UMD's soccer team, but broke her ankle in practice and spent fall semester hopping around on crutches and a boot cast!!

Just as I was ready to post this, Maria scores!

My watching TV at home source (lucky stiff) says Sweden scored after the rough stuff and they are at 1-1. Would love to be actually watching this (sigh)!
