The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

What an awesome game!!! The biggest difference I can see is that both goals by Poulin were one-timers, real quick shots...Vetter couldn't be faulted on either of the goals...the second shot came on the bounce back off a skate...Zsabados(sp) is SO focused....she playing great...the US on the PP is to deliberate, taking the time to settle the puck and with only a few shots on net with someone in front...when it is on net, Zsaby sees it all the way...still for all of us who love and know the women's game, isn't this THE best illustration of what the women's game offers? How can people not come and enjoy this action and effort? Yea, I suppose a China-Bulgaria game just might be a bit slower, eh?
Good luck USA and Kacey, but I think that Canada has this one.....

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

That's it. Canada wins gold 2-0.

Congrats to our neighbors to the north. Congrats to Team USA on their silver medal performance.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Indeed. The Canadians certainly earned that gold. What a game! Congrats to the USA and to Finland, too. Champions all. :D

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

And if you're looking for pictures in case (for some reason) you couldn't watch the game live, try AP Images and refresh often...they're continuously adding more.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Did I hear it correctly?

Did the MSNBC announcer call Mel Davidson a guy? hahaha..I know it might be debateable with that weave but really, do you homework!!

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

congratulations to the Canadian team - I couldn't work up any venom for the Canadians - so many have been the players I've watched every year. I just wish there was something more the college grads could do that would keep their immense talents in the world view.

I feel the same. While I'm disappointed for Team USA, with Jen Botterill and Sarah Vallaincourt playing for Team Canada, there is small solace in their taking the gold. But frankly, Canada is now dominating women's hockey having won the last three golds. Yes, the US can play with them but beating them is another matter altogether.

Ok, but give the US credit for winning World Championships in 2005, 2008. 2009 (and they'd lost every championship before that). Surely the US program is in a much better position than 4 years ago. It's not like the overall gap between Canada and the US is widening, even though the Olympic gold medal count is.

I am disappointed it wasn't a closer game. Yes, the play was exciting, but I pretty much felt the outcome wasn't much in doubt after the US whiffed on the second 5-on-3 early in the 2nd.

Notice that Botterill finished with just two assists for the whole tourney, the lowest skater point total on the team, but wow was the 2nd one ever huge!

Agreed, this was the critical moment.

What an amazing game though.

Great game to watch. I'm sure it was better live. I'll see if I can get my daughter to somehow say something other than "It was amazing!".

Sad to see some of the senior players on the US team as the got their medals. I'm sure many on this team won't be back. The effects of age will hurt some and others may not have enough opportunity to compete at a high enough level to maintain their skills. I expect a much different US team come 2014.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I guess it was for the better that I missed the game (had a class tonight, just got home).

I'll join the chorus of congratulations to the Canadian team.

And I'm very impressed with our Canadian members here and their sensibility in posting since the game. Yes, I notice that they haven't been here, but besides being too busy celebrating, I'm sure that they aren't ones to rub it in our faces. Thanks for the graciousness.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I agree. It was a great game between two excellent teams. I know a lot of Canadians A) thought the Canadian Olympic Team was two old and B) questioned Davidson's coaching ability. I think both those questions have been answered.

In addition, USA's veterans played very well.

I am disappointed it wasn't a closer game. Yes, the play was exciting, but I pretty much felt the outcome wasn't much in doubt after the US whiffed on the second 5-on-3 early in the 2nd.

Biggest problem I saw with this PP was that the U.S. players stayed too stationary and made Canada's job relatively easy to defend against it.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Congratulations to Canada for a well deserved win and Gold Medal.

Congrats to the U.S. team also. They tried SO hard! I was in awe of the effort they gave, and can't help but think that the skill and determination that both teams displayed helped elevate the womens game to a new level.

Canada shuts out Americans, claims gold in women's hockey

They ambled back onto the ice an hour after the medal ceremony, swigging champagne and beer and smoking cigars. While Meghan Agosta and Marie-Philip Poulin posed for pictures with goofy grins, Rebecca Johnston tried to drive the ice-resurfacing machine.

Long after the crowds had gone, 14 players returned to the ice and toasted each other with bottles of champagne and cans of beer. Haley Irwin poured a drink into Tessa Bonhomme's mouth and Agosta and others enjoyed cigars, the smoke wafting up into the stands.

Gilbert Felli, the IOC's executive director of the Olympic Games, said he wasn't aware of the celebration until informed by an AP reporter.

"If that's the case, that is not good. It is not what we want to see," he said. "I don't think it's a good promotion of sport values. If they celebrate in the changing room, that's one thing, but not in public.

"We will investigate what happened. We will talk to the federation and the NOC. We will first find the facts and then act accordingly," he said.

Next Volly in the US-Canada rivalry?

Being in the building for this I can tell you that yes the crowds were gone when this occurred however there were still quite a few people, family members of players and children present for the actions described above.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Not since the Dam Busters Raid in 1943 has there been a better kept secret than Shannon Szabados. At 15 she was the first female to play in the Mac's Midget tournament in Calgary (all male at the time), at 16 she was the first female to play in the (WHL) Western Hockey League for the Tri-City Americans making history in playing 20 seconds in the WHL in a regular season game. Szabados returned from there to the AJHL with the Alberta based Ft. Saskatchewan (Edmonton, Alberta ) Traders where she led them to the top of the regular league standings and came within a game of winning the AJHL Championship. She was awarded the AJHL goaltender of the year in 2007 for her efforts.

Still with me here...this is male Junior A Hockey I'm talking about!

IMHO Hockey Canada and Ms. Szabados were responsible for keeping her profile low until she was unleashed at this years Olympics. No NCAA or Canadian University hockey for her.... no Hockey Canada tipping theIr hat on this diamond in the rough...Shannon played for the ACAC Grant MacEwen College team in Edmonton, Alberta during the 07/08 & 08/09 seasons. Significant in the fact that this league is one level under the CIS or University hockey in Canada.

Don't get me wrong Vetter played a strong game for the US side and anyone watching this game was witness to some of the best female goaltending we have seen ...ever.

Inevitably however Szabados was able to mystify the new & improved US Women's National Team with an unpenatrable glove side and calming effect between the pipes. This Szabados kid was surely the difference maker tonight. Full Stop.

Congrats to both teams for entertaining us yet again, unfortunatley however there is a winner and loser. I trust you agree, if Im an IOC member watching that game tonight I can't think for the life of me, how one can even contemplate ever taking Women's (Ice) Hockey out of the Olympics.

Now on to the Men's action....
