Take a Stand Against Sexual Assault: Resist the TSA

Re: Take a Stand Against Sexual Assault: Resist the TSA

Also, what is the % of those that are getting the "double treatment"? COmpared to how many are flying I bet it is tiny.

The risk is the same except one guy getting scanned could prevent all the passengers being dead if they catch him.

Why does the percentage matter? It's ok to violate our constitutional rights so long as it only happens to what? 1%? 1/10th of 1%? "Why should you worry if you have nothing to hide" is a horrible legal philosophy.

No, the risk is the same - 1/30,000,000. There's no "except" needed. And there's no evidence that these things stop anyone.

Re: Take a Stand Against Sexual Assault: Resist the TSA

They're wondering why we're letting our gov't trample our constitutional rights in the name of security theater. Seriously, the new pat downs/scanners solve nothing. It doesn't help when the former TSA head who ordered the things is now the CEO of the company that makes them. But that isn't a conflict of interest at all.

I don't think they have the same attitude toward things like that. What I have been exposed to they are more pragmatic. When I was in the UK no one blinked an eyelash when they tightened security. They just thought it was a good idea and they would be safer. The only people I heard whine were Americans who wanted to bend the rules and couldn't bring a bunch of carry on stuff. (of course that was after they had the bomb in London and Glasgow Airport.)

Except it's not the aviation security administration, it's the transportation security administration. They're already starting to takeover security of trains as well, won't be long before they try to implement security on all forms of interstate travel.
That would be hilarious. Full body checks for everyone crossing state borders in cars. I await that day.

In what way is it violating your rights? I would nearly guarantee the supreme court wouldn't see it as a violation.

Heh. THis is the solution to the gas crisis. Everyone would stop driving over the borders in protest and the gas consumption would go way down:p

Re: Take a Stand Against Sexual Assault: Resist the TSA

What could be accomplished by switching out luggage since whatever carry-on he had wasn't scanned either? It's not really a credible threat, but neither were underwear or box cutters.

Hmm, that's a good point. No harm in scanning his luggage. I'm saying, why waste the time patting him down, when as the presumptive Speaker of the House, there are various other ways he could do a lot more harm to America?

Re: Take a Stand Against Sexual Assault: Resist the TSA

I think we can all agree that politicians are a form of terrorist in this country. So maybe checking them is a form of profiling.

That's the point: you and others are looking at PREVIOUS attack methods. They've never repeated a method. They're always looking forward to NEW techniques to kill us. They've announced it publicly. So I guess by spending billions of dollars, and employing people who would otherwise be playing elves at Wal-Marts, we've caused the terrorists a little inconvenience by making them work out new attack plans. Not an even swap, IMO.

You're probably correct given the precedent, but by any stretch of the word "reasonable" this falls on the wrong side in my opinion. Death of the 4th Amendment by 1000 cuts, slippery slope, whatever you call it.

SCOTUS does get it wrong more often than they'll admit. The fact that Wickard v. Filburn is still good law shows that.

Re: Take a Stand Against Sexual Assault: Resist the TSA

Honestly the last time I flew, it was back in 2001 before you know what went down. If I have to fly again, I'm wearing a stars and stripes speedo. I think a lot of the whole mess would go away if they made everybody wear one of those while flying. Think of how much faster the screening process would be if everybody was just in a speedo.

If I wore a Speedo of any description, the terminal would empty out in seconds.

No, it can't. These are specially designed to concentrate the x-ray at the skin level, and doesn't penetrate any deeper. It essentially really can only penetrate clothing.

No x-rays. X-rays are a completely different wavelength. These are much longer wavelengths IIRC.

Re: Take a Stand Against Sexual Assault: Resist the TSA

No, you're not afraid of everything, you're just willing to give up your 4th Amendment rights over the near-zero chance (1/30,000,000) of a terrorist attack.

By that token, you should be willing to submit to a breathalyzer at every interstate on-ramp in the name of safety. Afterall, you're far more likely to die in a collision with a drunk driver than you are in a terrorist attack.

Interesting analogy. I like it.

Also, I'm a bit surprised to see you and OP agreeing on the same subject.

Re: Take a Stand Against Sexual Assault: Resist the TSA

I'd say there's a lot more bipartisanship on this than a lot of other issues.

Re: Take a Stand Against Sexual Assault: Resist the TSA

Honestly, I get the Fourth Amendment argument. But I guess I don't mind this as much. If I can get into line with a hottie doing the feeling up bonus points. If someone wants to look at my junk in a scanner, fine.

The only "hottie" patting you down will be named Bruce.

Where he and I would probably diverge is if we replaced these obviously worthless "security" measures with some that might actually reduce the odds. I'm guessing he wouldn't be a big fan of those measures, either, because of their theoretical potential for "singling out Muslims" etc. etc. IMO, he's primarily concerned about the massive violations of the 4th amendment whereas I'm concerned about the efficacy of the methods we're using. That puts us on the same side, temporarily. LOL.
