St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

As a Plattsburgh fan, I'll play a few of those teams ahead of us in this "ranking" for my house !!

Which teams? Name three that you would be willing to wager your house over with your 30th ranked Strength of Schedule.

St. Thomas, River Falls and St. Scholastica for starters. Certainly wouldn't back down from the other, but would probably only bet my lawnmower on those. I have seen St. Thomas, WRF and CSS play before during this year and others. The SOS is gong to change over the next few weeks as always.

After a quick review, I noticed this Massey Ratings group must really follow D3 hockey. Ready for this:

Scholastica has won ONE of their last 6 games

&

St. Thomas has won ONE of their last 5 games

They're really paying attention. Of course, nobody who knows a thing about D3 hockey had these teams ranked that high in ANY poll. Be sensible.

Make that River Falls , not St. Thomas. St. Thomas is "on a roll" winning 2 of their last 4.

The top SOS Eastern team had a rank of 27 (Naz). At first I thought it was an April Fool's joke, but I guess they think they are serious. A lot of good teams out west for sure. One thing I found interesting, they believe Plattsburgh will lose less than 2 games the rest of the season, which leads all teams.

Perhaps this Massey computer has factored in that the west has gone 9-2 combined against the east in the last six final fours which could really weigh the results heavily in the west's favor.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

I did a quick check and noticed something interesting about those games. In EVERY game, the Eastern team outshot the Western team, including a 41-18 advantage by Norwich over St. Norbert in 2011. Not saying shots on goal is the end-all, nor is it more important than the scoreboard. Just saying that the 9-2 advantage probably looks a little worse than it is.

If I have time, I will delve a little further in to the history and see if we can sway those numbers a little more !

# of Division I transfers on roster.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

That sure has a lot to do with it !! Since 2000, Norwich is 4-4 against Western teams in the Final Four. Plattsburgh is 2-4, Oswego is 1-4 and Middlebury is 2-1. St. Norbert is 8-5 against Eastern teams. Nobody else has made more than one or two appearances.

No 9-2 looks as bad as it is.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

There is no planet that will have Norwich ranked ahead of Plattsburgh. If your main criteria is that Norwich outshot Plattsburgh Tuesday night.....then we should not count Williams win over Plattsburgh either !!

Wait! I thought that shots didn't matter? Or, do they only matter when it conveniently helps your argument?

Who have Scholastica and River Falls played in their last 6/5 games? Did they lose those in regulation? Very easy to make such a blanket statement. While you would bet your house on a Plattsburgh win over Scholastica, River Falls and St. Thomas you might consider that Scholastica just took Adrian to two straight OT games; River Falls just beat Stevens Point and took St. Norbert to OT; and, St. Thomas has one of the stingiest defenses in the nation with a quality win over Scholastica and a shutout win over the same (6-9-2) Superior squad that you allowed to get one past your netminder.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

Wait,,,,this is 3 or 4 on 1 !!! I'm hoping the Cardinals meet up with some of those teams in Maine. You know , we did spend a fair amount of time this year as #1 ?? I don't have an east-west "thing" anyways. I dislike way more teams in the east.

And if the NFL went by total yardage gained the Packers would have won about four more games this year (although with that sieve of a defense, maybe not). Anyway the Massey could also be skewed heavily western after Norwich lost to Superior which turned around and lost and tied to Finlandia which is residing comfortably in the NCHA cellar. Those sorts of results can really affect a computer rating depending on what is weighted more.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

all this SOG talk, Lets take a look at the 2012 frozen four

Amherst had 44 shots on goal to Oswego's 27 in their 2012 Frozen Four game, Oswego won. Norwich had 27 shots to St. Norbert's 23, St. Norbert Won. In the final Oswego had 30 to St. Norbert's 25, St. Norbert won. the lower shots on goal team every game.

I'll probably get some heat for this, but I watched every game of the frozen four that year and Amherst looked like the best team by far. St. Norbert looked like the worst of the 4 but won it all. Sometimes you get lucky breaks sometimes you don't.

Exactly why I miss the multi game series......
