St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

I was confident in the win but I didn't see that coming. I'm sad to say I didn't take SNC -9.5.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

Nice weekend, guys. Strange way to split, but I'll take it, from our end.

That's a nice job of broadcasting your guys did this weekend.

Tim D kills it. Been doing it for 20+ years now. I actually thought last nights single camera work on SNC's regular feed was superior to tonight's network TV camera work.

I knew tonight would be a different story but was still hoping for 4 pts. I'm hoping this split proves to be a blessing in disguise for SNC, as I think there is a fair to high probability these two teams will meet again (if not two more times.)

I thought Shackle played well this weekend, albeit he was more unorthodox than I expected (the only other game of note I've seen him play was last season's NCAA game vs. Oswego.)

I hope SNC finds some good stuff to build upon from this weekend. To some extent I think Adrian is a little lucky to have won only one of six periods on the weekend and still came away with 2 pts. But hats off to them, they did what they had to do and earned a hard fought split on the road.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

So, should SNC and Adrian both win out (just for argument's sake, that's not a prediction), what is the tiebreaker for hosting the Harris Cup finals?

Head to head is a wash in terms of wins. SNC would have more wins but Adrian would have fewer losses. Goal differential in the H2H goes to SNC. SNC currently has a bigger goal differential in all conference games.

I couldn't begin to tell you periods led. Sounds stupid, but since the Midwest Conference uses it (well, quarters, led, of course) in football, I had to mention tongue-in-cheek.

Also, is the Peters Cup a shared title situation, or would that tiebreaker also give the trophy to just one team.

A little help, please...

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

I believe the first tiebreaker is head-to-head. We're even there.

I think I read that the second tiebreaker is goal differential between the teams during head-to-head. I think we know how that turned out, and I think we're done here.

Thanks. Silly me for not looking there.

And I said, that's not a prediction. SNC blew a three-goal lead, at home, in the third period, to Lawrence. Anything's possible.

If you guys get past CSS next weekend unscathed, I think you're probably good.

or maybe Lawrence will give us another surprise against Adrian this weekend and take at least one win :)

St. Norbert needs to take care of their own business. While an upset by Lawrence would be nice, the Knights can't afford to be scoreboard watching. CSS already beat SNC and played Adrian tough not that long ago.
To come out of Duluth with 4 point would be great, but it's gonna be no walk in the park.
So even if Adrian does slip up this weekend, there's no guarantee that Norbert would have sole possession of first.
Gonna be an interesting two weeks. Even though the names have changed it's still the same old NCHA.

Your prediction was only that last word from being perfect!

Not that you play for it of course, but if they have to scratch and claw for a tie tomorrow it isn't a disaster. I was more impressed with tonight's 3-0 effort than the 11-1 win Friday against Adrian. Last Friday was just one of those nights where nothing could go wrong for SNC and nothing could go right for Adrian. This one they did a terrific job working for 60 minutes and giving up little. Hopefully tomorrow they stay patient because it rarely comes easy against the Saints. I think St. Scholastica has as many good players as SNC but not as many great ones so hopefully you get those guys some room to work and go from there. Keeping Jake clean like they did helps.

I didn't comment much after Saturday night's game because I didn't know what to say. I'm still puzzled how they can dominate for 80 straight minutes against a team as good as Adrian and turn a game they should have been leading 3-0 or 4-0 after 1 period into a loss.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

I was at the games, and was equally frustrated. It's as if all players forgot how to play all at the same time. But as I watched I noticed SNC no longer playing aggressive defense. In Friday's game they poked the puck off Adrian's sticks and otherwise disrupted their play so they could not get into rhythm. This happened in the defensive zone and neutral ice and stopped pretty much any offensive push they had. Couple that with the amazing presence in front of the net that was for Saturday, and we have a huge problem. Also the shots SNC took were poor ones. On Friday, they skated into the net and outmaneuvered the goaltenders. On Saturday the took one time long distance shots from 20-30 feet away, and missed a number of wide open nets with the puck in perfect scoring position. That's what I saw happen, but I still can't figure out WHY.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

I knew points would be tough Saturday. Very pleased with 4 on the road against a good Saints team. Big time work by a senior captain this afternoon who does a bunch of good things that help you win hockey games but doesn't usually put up big goal totals.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

Appeared to be a solid win tonight... And, more importantly, the table is set for a home win tomorrow to clinch the first regular season version of the Peters Cup. Now, don't stub a toe and faceplant... But after watching the men's bouncyball team play the Grinnell circus at 1pm, should be a nice end of a DH.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

Congrats to Coach Tim, his staff and the players on yet another Peters Cup title, albeit of a slightly different flavor.

Time for some revenge against Lawrence and take the first steps toward that first Harris Cup

Saw this on the NCHA website earlier today...congrats boys but you know this isn't what you are after.

Men's All-Conference, All-Rookie Teams

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contacts: Brian Monahan (monahan@nchahockey.org), Chris Zills (zills@nchahockey.org)

The NCHA league office announced today the Men's Conference All-NCHA team, Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Freshman of the Year and All-Freshmen team. The awards are voted on by the league head coaches.

The 2013-14 Player of the Year is St. Norbert goaltender David Jacobson (Jr, G - Janesville, Wis.). Through games of February 27, Jacobson posted a 1.28 goals against average and a .935 save percentage. Both statistics rank first in the NCHA. His goals against average ranks second in the nation, with Jacobson having played roughly double the minutes of the individual he trails. His conference goals against average was a miniscule 1.08. Jacobson led the league in wins as well with a 17 overall and 13 in conference play. He lost just once all season.

"David is a very competitive kid and he's a very athletic kid," said St. Norbert head coach Tim Coghlin. "He makes some saves that he shouldn't make. He can do things like that ... He's a confident young man and that stems from his work ethic and his preparedness."

Jacobson was named All-NCHA for the third straight year. He was named All-American and NCHA All-Freshmen in 2012 as well.

The 2013-14 Coach of the Year is Lake Forest's Ryan McKelvie. McKelvie is in his third year behind the Forester bench, where he has guided the program to its most overall wins in eight years. Lake Forest earned the No. 4 seed and home ice for the Quarterfinals in this year's Harris Cup Playoffs. The Foresters will play at St. Norbert in the Semifinals this Saturday night.

The 2013-14 Freshman of the Year is St. Norbert's Blake Thompson (Fr, D - Listowel, Ont.). Thompson recorded three goals and 17 assists in his first year with the Green Knights. His 17 points in conference games were tied for first among all defensemen and were just one point back of the Freshman scoring leader, Lawrence's Blake Roubos (Fr, F - Niagara Falls, Ont.). Thompson is currently the highest scoring freshman defensemen in the country.

St. Norbert led all schools with five student-athletes named to the All-NCHA team. Other highlights from this year's distinguished group include Marian's Tyler Klein (Sr, F - Fargo, N.D.) being selected to his second straight All-NCHA team. Lake Forest's Ben Certo (Jr, D - Grand Island, N.Y.) earned All-NCHA after being named to the All-Freshmen team last year. Adrian's Duston Hebebrand (Jr, F - Waterloo, Ont.) was named All-NCHA after capturing the conference scoring crown with 15 goals inside 27 points.

Adrian was the lone school to send two student-athletes to the six-member All-Freshmen team. Brett Pinkerton (Fr, F - Pilot Mound, Man.) and Michael Hoy (Fr, D - South Lyon, Mich.) were selected as a forward and defenseman, respectively. Lawrence's Roubos made the team after winning the Freshmen scoring title.

Congratulations, gentlemen.

Re: St. Norbert 2013-14 - a new mountain to climb on the way back to the top

very solid win for SNC to earn their first Harris Cup. SNC got a few good bounces on goals and absolutely shut down CSS offensively. Congrats to coach and everyone,
