Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

As this season moves into its final weekend before playoffs I just want to thank everyone who has posted here. We have had quite a range of opinions on the RPI program, as always, but it has been an informative and respectful interaction at all times. There is an incredible passion around RPI hockey (men's and women's) and that has been reflected here. Only two team threads on the women's side have garnered more posts than us, and those are the two dominant western teams, Minny and Wisco, who for very good reason have a passionate following. No matter what happens next weekend and in the playoffs, I have to say that this has been the most exciting RPI women's team ever.

Top 5 posters this season, so far:
1) the inimitable Ralph Baer (of course)
2) yours truly :o
3) Shelfit
4) Lugnut
5) Giwan

It is interesting that we have 8 known recruits for 2016 or 2017 and no two are from the same state or province.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

She has had the biggest impact on the team's improvement this year and is a slam dunk for the team's MVP award at the end of the season. Congrats to her. Well deserved.

I can't argue with that...and as you know, Shelfit, I do love to argue ;).

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

Same thing I just posted in the men's thread:

Code:
   | 6 7 8 9
----------------------------
20 | 20.7 [B]26.4[/B] 11.7
21 | 0.2 [B]11.5[/B] 7.5 1.5
22 | 1.1 [B]14.9[/B] 0.9 0.0
23 | 0.8 [B]1.9[/B]
24 | [B]0.5[/B] 0.4

We're probably in regardless, but it's not a guarantee unless we pick up at least three.

I love your statistical analyses and simulations Lugnut, but this has to be your most obtuse post so far :p. For those of us who are not RPI grads can you translate this into English ;).

I'm guessing the X axis is "place," the Y axis is "points" and all the numbers are percentage chances adding up to 100. So 87% chance of making play-offs?

That makes sense, thank you EastFan1! My gut tells me that their chances of making the playoffs are less than 87%. A lot of things can happen on this final weekend and the only way to control our destiny is to come up with some points against two of the best teams in the conference.

I'm sure the women are amused by all of this. The players know (hopefully) that they just need to hit the ice for each game determined to win whether they are playing QU or Union. All of us armchair pundits really just need to go to the games (or watch the video) and admire their efforts. It will be an "interesting" weekend.

Sorry. I sort of explained it in the men's thread, so I assumed people would have seen that. EastFan is right. I basically use it to show what position is most likely for each number of points gained (which is why the most likely rank is bolded in each row). I remember burgie12 posting a similar array for each team in seasons past, and basically took the idea from him. Sorry for the confusion.

RPI has never seemed to have a real 'pipeline' for recruiting like teams from Minnesota (local Minny prospects) and Clarkson (Ontario). I have often wondered how many of our best recruits have actually sought out RPI because of its academics and how many were actively recruited by the coaching staff. A lot of our women's team recruits seem to go into Engineering and other academically challenging disciplines. My daughter chose RPI with about equal emphasis on its great academics and its strong hockey culture. Back when RPI was a D3 team the great Bill Cahill used to come to Western Canada at least once a year to attend tournaments. Can you imagine that? A D3 coach with no $ to offer, going out west to chat with players about the advantages of an education at RPI? Now, in the D1 era, we need to emphasize the combination of superior scientific/ technical education and competitive hockey.

I suspect that you are correct that players who are indeed interested in Engineering/Science probably seek out RPI. OTOH, at least four of the eight teams we have recruits from have been also the source of other recent recruits: Nepean, Toronto, NAHA, and CYA.

Read about Cahill, and what he did was really think outside the box. I'm sure no one knew about RPI out west let alone females for a technical institute during that time.

Not really sure one needs a pipeline and really not sure how much more RPI is known out west. Based on the recruit locations that seems to possibly not be an issue. The hockey coaching world is quite small. The asst coaches really have a lot of contacts with many of the programs and the number of programs seems to be expanding. As one coach mentioned to me his discussion with college coaches. Would you rather have a first line player from me or a second/third line player from (fill in well known academy, prep school). Players are everywhere, question is can you develop them and turn them into a team.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

I was thinking about that and moreover the trend to more hockey players listed in the higher classes. I certainly don't have any inside information, but it might be the fact that with hockey being RPI's only D-I sport, there is more "hitting the weight room" by hockey players than others. What would be interesting is to see the chart yearly. If there are many more hockey players when the Class of '19 are seniors, I would think I have a point. If not, then that class just isn't that strong.

That may be true but in general I would expect the hockey players in general to be stronger based on the sports needs. My understanding is that AC Christie has been known to push the metal.

I wonder why SUNY Canton was at the HFH.

Edit: Never mind. Cicero used to be an AC at Canton.

the great Bill Cahill

There's a great candidate for the Ring of Honor. Long time men's assistant who turned the women's team into a D3 powerhouse, and then guided into the DI era. Who knows where RPI could be as a DI team if he was still alive and at the helm.
