RPI Engineers '15-'16

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

... interestingly between periods the shots changed!
This happens because one person is incrementing the shot clock that is displayed on a scoreboard while someone else is charting the shots, but they either aren't communicating or miscommunicate. The charting of the shots is official, so that's why you sometimes see the two synched up after periods.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

RPI and QU tied 1-1 after one period. Seemed like 90% of the period was inside the RPI blue line but Selander solid and RPI is being opportunistic, a few good scoring opportunities but QU good at blocking shots and RPI rattled one off the crossbar in the dying seconds. QU forechecking is best I have seen all season and winning almost all of the one-on-one battles.

QU'a biggest advantage is stick work. We can't carry the puck without it being stolen. On the other hand, for the most part the Engineers have played a smart defensive game - the shot chart is loaded with chances from above the circles and outside the dots. Selander is such a calm presence and she's not going to get beaten by many of those.

One result of RPI's passive, pack the slot and passing lanes defense is that QU has been able to cycle to their hearts content on the perimeter. It's fun to watch - they've possessed the puck about 75% of the time - but it hasn't generated the amount of prime scoring chances you might expect from such dominant stats.

Quinny 2 RPI 1

Took em 2 OT's and 68 shots on goal to get the win. My hats off to Ms Selander.

What a shame but inevitable. Had to be one of the greatest goal tending exhibitions I've ever witnessed. 66 saves! Wow. Can Selander play for the men's team?

The last 5 minutes or so you could see it coming. The team, several of whom I heard were sick, just ran out of gas and couldn't keep up with a powerful Bobcat club. The winning goal came on a rebound after Selander stopped a flurry of shots. What a performance in net. Selander is a cool goaltender but also a determined competitor. I noticed that her shattered stick was on the ice as they lined up for handshakes.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

Sounds like it was a couple of extremely exciting games. Congrats to RPI for taking #4 so deep two days in a row!

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

RPI fought for both of these games, and unfortunately it just wasn't enough. We jumped on a few opportunities, but Quinnipiac was just better. They really were just all around a better hockey team (except for maybe between the pipes). I was proud to cheer for our team this afternoon, and I look forward to seeing if we can add a little bit of offense to support Selander next year.

It doesn't look like any of our recruits are big scorers. No one is close to the 108 points which Gruschow had in her last year before RPI. Then again I wasn't able to find even nearly complete stats for some recruits.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

Congrats and commiserations to RPI on a hard-fought playoff series and on becoming a team everyone has to take seriously. Selander looks like a once-in-a-generation franchise goalie. Wonder if they can use her to change some recruiting decisions in the next year.

No goalie in her right mind is going to look at RPI as a great situation for a playing opportunity until Selander graduates.

Right, but some good forwards might see this as a chance to lift a team that's recently struggled into a playoff contender, which they mightn't have done in the last few years.

Kira Bombay is a member of the same class, so unless she leaves because of lack of playing time, we don't need a backup until both graduate. As to a third goalie, she won't be on a scholarship.

BTW, does anyone know how RPI got Selander? She wasn't playing in the US like the Swedes on the men's team.

While I think Selander absolutely deserves the award, I can't see her getting past the skaters. A goalie usually has to be absolutely outrageous to win these awards. Selander was amazing, but not ungodly, and she couldn't make us win.

I agree that she is unlikely to win, but she did get RPI into the playoffs.

Two things that hurt Selander's chances are that I don't think the first round of the playoffs count for RotY, and that was some of her best work. Also, Lund was the top scorer in the conference overall, not just among rookies. Other than that, I'd say Selander did everything she could.
