RPI Engineers '15-'16

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

I've said it before, I'll say it again...there is something special about this year's Engineers. In the early stages of this game against a very talented Princeton team they seemed to be outclassed. On top of that, the great Lovisa Salender let in two weak goals.. Okay, she also stopped about 50 other shots, some of which were great scoring opportunities for the Tigers. Somehow, the team scraped and battled to an impressive tie. RPI teams of recent years have tended to fold down the stretch...this team gets tougher as the going gets tougher. They now have a .500 record with just one game to go, and still not guaranteed a playoff spot, but no matter the outcome tomorrow I stand by my earlier comment that this is the grittiest and most exciting team I have watched... and I have followed all of the RPI D1 teams.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

A point was big, but not enough to sew it up. Tomorrow is going to be crazy. It's not a good thing that we lose every tie but the one-on-one with Cornell.

RPI KRACH (RRWP): 65.44 (.4262)

MCTs (Mean/Median/Mode/Range):
Points - 21.29 / 21 / 21 / 21 - 23
Rank - 7.38 / 7 / 7 / 6 - 9
Playoffs - 94.5%
Most likely opponent - at Clarkson (62.2%)

Conference Rankings:
  1. Quinnipiac
  2. Clarkson
  3. Princeton
  4. Colgate

  5. Harvard
  6. SLU
  7. RPI
  8. Cornell

  9. Yale
  10. Dartmouth
  11. Brown
  12. Union

Code:

I wouldn't say as much as scraped through. They had that game won and let it slip through. Hopefully it will be a boost showing they can play at that level and not a negative.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

After QU went up 4-0 on the Engineers I spent more time watching the scoreboard for the other games and what a cliff-hanger it was in terms of RPI's playoff hopes. The Engineers take 8th spot, but only because Clarkson got a game-winning goal with 25 seconds left against Yale. A tie in that game would have eliminated RPI.

Your welcome. Now go back there next weekend and win 2 ;) .

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

Anyone know if Laura Horwood will be able to play in the series against Quinnipiac? We haven't seen her since the Dartmouth game. She took a whack on the hand in the game against Harvard, played most of the game the following day against Dartmouth but was clearly protecting her right arm during the hand shakes at the end of the game, and we didn't see her this past weekend.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

No question that RPI will be big underdogs going into this weekend's series with #4 Quinnipiac. But before counting out the Engineers consider the fact that their best games this year have been against the top teams. Of the 11 teams that garnered votes in this week's USCHO poll, RPI has face 5 of them and have picked up at least one point against all five. They have a win and a loss against #5 Clarkson, and they have a tie and a loss against the others (QU, Princeton, Colgate, and Harvard). Having said that, the QU team they faced on Saturday looked much stronger than the team they faced earlier in the year.

Correction: we also played 2 games at N.Dakota early in the year and lost both, but the GWG in the first loss was with 2 mins left.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

I'll be the total downer here. KRACH is by no means the end all, be all, but I've been giving simulation odds all year, so I won't stop now. The playoffs are a different animal, and there's always the "any given Sunday" argument.

RPI KRACH (RRWP): 65.44 (0.4262)
To compare, Quinnipiac sits at 690.31 (0.7987).

RPI has a 2.12% chance to win their series with Quinnipiac. They have an 83.4% chance of being swept. They have an 0.23% chance to make the final and 0.02% to win it all. In the other series, Clarkson and Princeton are heavy favorites to advance. Harvard is actually favored by a slim margin (52-48) to upset Colgate.

All that said, let's just go and get it done.

That's a nice tidbit, and I like RPI, but I just like Q more. That's the problem with best-of-three series -- they aren't that Cinderella friendly.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

Love the positive thinking hab - but I'm hoping Selander is eating her Wheaties this week.

The only way I see this weekend going well for RPI is if she can hold QU scoreless or maybe to one goal. RPI has had a real lack of offense (in terms of both scoring and shots) against the top teams in the league (three goals in two games against Clarkson, shutout twice by QU). We've seen she could do it earlier in the season when RPI tied QU 0-0, but this time the game won't end after 65 minutes and someone has to score. QU outshot RPI 40-15 in that tie and 52-14 in the season finale - the stats are not kind to RPI in this matchup.

My real concern is after they put up a strong fight on Friday afternoon, win or lose, what's left in the tank for a rematch on Saturday? These are very different teams than when they combined to play 16 periods of hockey across three days in 2009. RPI outshot QU in all three of those games as they did in both regular season games that season.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

Look, in a best of 3 game series against Quinny they have no meaningful chance barring a catastrophic injury to Quinny goalie. Enjoy the games and the fact that RPI finally climbed back into the playoffs (albeit on the strength of Yale's last minute failure). It is an accomplishment and one that 4 ECAC teams can only dream about. :)

That's a great point. I can imagine a situation like the weekend series with Wisconsin a few years ago. We kept it close and even led going into the third on Friday, but they wiped the floor with us on Saturday.

Moving on from the pessimism, I'm really bummed that these games are all at 2. Quinnipiac is more than close enough for me to go to the game, but I can't duck out that early on Friday.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

Okay, I know that I deservedly wear the label of resident optimist here, but I did say that RPI was going into this weekend as "big underdogs". You see, the thing is, there seems to be a spirit around this team that wasn't there in recent years and I think that they will relish the thought of being big underdogs. Don't expect them to lay down this weekend.

I like RPI's goalie. Without her RPI would be sitting home. I really think she could steal one game from Quinny but RPI somehow has to figure out how to get 2 or 3 goals in the game.

No question that without Selander we are not in this series at all, and for a goalie to be super hot two games in three days is asking a lot. The rest of the team has to step up, play a tight forechecking game, drive hard to the QU net and....jeez it is a long list of things they have to do well to have a chance here, but this is an intense RPI team, so stay tuned.

It's been a great year for women's hockey in Troy and it all starts with a great goalie. I think the problem is that in both games vs Q, the Engineers didn't generate enough offense (shots were about 15 in each game). So scoring 2 goals is going to be a huge accomplishment. At the same time, Q shot 40-50 on net per game. Q is just just a tough draw for a 3 game series.

I'm not trying to put you down, I was just going from the qualitative "big underdogs" to something more quantitative.

I also don't understand why the Friday game is in the afternoon. I won't be able to make it then but will try to be there when the Engineers close out the massive upset on Saturday.

The games are in the afternoon because the QU men are at home.
