>>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-13: Clawing our way up the standings in the 2nd half

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-13: Clawing our way up the standings in the 2nd half

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-13: Clawing our way up the standings in the 2nd half

As a side note - RIT is still the only AHA team ever to hold "THE BELT" - and they had it twice. Both times, they lost it the next game.

We got it from Minny before losing to BC a few years ago; what was the other time? Did we carry it into the Frozen Four in 2010?

Correct. It got taken into the ECAC by QU over UMass Thanksgiving 09, which meant that Cornell took it out of the ECAC Tournament. UNH won it in the first round, RIT took it to the Frozen Four, Wisconsin brought it to the Championship game, and BC kept it for the off-season.

The Air Force games are always close out there as well. This year, RIT's loss was in OT.

And that in a game in which RIT had 42 penalty minutes to Air Force's 4, including a 5-minute major, in a game in which the reporters covering it asked me if AHA officiating is always that poor.

Nobody wins at Niagara. They are currently unbeaten in their last 20 there, and that's not even the school record. The record is 22 unbeaten games between 2006-2007.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-13: Clawing our way up the standings in the 2nd half

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-13: Clawing our way up the standings in the 2nd half

So either RIT is way overdue at both places ... or RIT is significantly worse than AFA and NU for all these years????
Niagara has consistently been the better team than RIT more often than not.
Air Force on the other hand has always been pretty even with RIT. Almost all games are 1-goal games, many in OT. My theory is that the long trip to Colorado Springs combined with the necessary altitude adjustment is a tough thing to overcome on the first night for RIT (and for any visiting team). Historically, RIT has fared much more poorly in their Friday contests than in their Saturday contests out there. Although they still have a losing record on Saturdays, they have managed a tie or win here and there unlike on Fridays. They did win a Friday game there many years ago while in D-III, but it was not against AFA (in-season tournament). Air Force has been nearly as unsuccessful here at Ritter as the Tigers are in Colorado Springs. The BCA is another story, however. That arena might as well be Air Force's home rink.

I like the Tigers' chances in any three-game series. Not so much in a one-and-done.

While I agree that a one-and-done for a team as poor on Fridays as RIT has been is a scary thought, I'm not sure what they might pull off in a best-of-three. At home, we all know they would lose game 1 on Friday then win game 2 on Saturday. Since all they have been this season is consistently inconsistent, I'd be scared to death going into a game 3. On the road is where their only series' sweeps have happened (won and lost), so the game 3 might not be needed if trends held.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-13: Clawing our way up the standings in the 2nd half

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-13: Clawing our way up the standings in the 2nd half

For 2 periods, everything was going right for RIT. Not only were they winning, the teams they needed to lose were losing. By the end of the night, not only did RIT lose, but teams they needed to lose at least got a point. They NEED to get points out of tonight to have a chance at a bye.
I know the Tigers were winning through 2 periods on Friday, but the flow of the game made me nervous throughout and I wouldn't have said that everything was going right, exactly. It seemed as though just about every time the Tigers tried a pass, dump-in, clear, bank-off-the-boards-to-self, or whatever, there was a Falcon anticipating the move and at least getting a good shot at stealing the puck. Either they had RIT's tendencies memorized to an amazing level, or they are just that quick and smart in puck pursuit that it looked like there were 7 or 8 of them on the ice at any given time. Saturday's game seemed like that to a point, but not nearly as badly as Friday's. Fortunately the Tigers were apparently doing a good job of their own at thwarting whatever AFA was trying offensively as they didn't generate a huge number of quality chances either (aside from those two crucial shifts in the third period, of course).

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-13: Clawing our way up the standings in the 2nd half

Ruby should have had the puck on the second AF goal but misplayed it. And it appeared like Ruby was more worried about losing his stick than making saves on the third AF goal. Not to mention that everyone else on the ice couldn't make a clearing play.
Seriously? You're blaming (at least partially) Ruby for that? He made at least two relatively amazing saves just to keep that puck from going in earlier in the sequence. There is NO WAY he or any other goalie could have done anything about that puck going in eventually, due to the complete lack of support (as you mentioned). The sequences on goal # 2 and # 3 for AFA reminded me of that game that teams play at the end of pre-game warmups where the entire team shoots on the goaltender from in close with no defense. Ugly! When your five teammates are playing like the guys in a bubble-hockey game where the rods are stuck (or simply just "spectating" as Coach Wilson called it), it's kind of tough.
I honestly was thoroughly impressed with Ruby's play this weekend. There was really only one goal that wasn't (IMHO) completely his teammates' fault, and even that one I'm not sure he "should have" stopped.

In the last eight games, Ruby has given RIT the chance to win each night, and that's what you need from your goalie. The stats for those eight games: .931 save percentage; 2.26 goals against average. Were those over the course of a season, they'd be among the elite goalies in D-I. I'd also argue that Ruby has made some spectacular game-saving saves in each.

I'm not sure which part of my statement you are worked up about or maybe both parts?

But yeah, Ruby misplayed the puck on the second goal. No doubt about it in my mind. I watched the replay several times.

As for the third goal, he made a save or two (can't remember how many off the top of my head) but then it looked like he was lost without his stick and was more concerened about that than making another save. No blame there, just an observation. Blame was being placed on the rest of the team in my post.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-13: Clawing our way up the standings in the 2nd half

I think Matt has it right, all though maybe could be a little less blunt, but who am I to say that :D

I thought the entire team broke down on both third period none empty net goals which really decided the game Friday night. Ruby did over play the puck on the first one, but it happens overal I have been really happy with his play and think he is at least now the better of the two goaltenders. The team as a whole needs to keep from snow balling, basically been the theme when they lose 58 or so great minutes of hockey, but then there is a 2-3 minute break down and the team just looks lost and doesn't know what to do and it ends up costing them the game. I would expect Wilson to be quick to call a time out if things start to snow ball in the slightest in the playoffs.

Bottom line, need to get 4 points against Canisius and that should set them up for a frist round game against a team they should beat. I think I prefer this team playing in the first round, we have seen many instances of teams coming off the bye being flat on Friday's game 1 and I do not think this team will recover well like years past. They should be able to get out of the first round if all hands are all board and then I think they will be very tough to knock off twice no matter who they play. If they get to Blue Cross anything and we can stomach the season, well most of us. Just like to keep at the top of the pack and hope we pick up another good freshman class and with a better defense make some noise before opening the new arena...

BTW, Buffalo area alumni is have a nice $12 reception down on Elmwood before the game on Saturday. Reception (without drinks) and ticket to game is $12, a normal price Canisius ticket is like $10. Details are on the alumni site...

And its not even that good of a barn, its an okay arena, but the atmosphere is always dead. Even when they play Canisius I am not impressed. It is to shallow on the seating, they make you sit instead of stand, ticket prices are higher than most college hockey prices I've seen around here and the DJ stinks... With respect for Burkholder I would not cry if the place burned down...

Well, I am sure we have insurance ... so maybe you could help with getting that started? Agree with most of what you said ... the sitting thing is just in the last couple of seasons - fire marshall, I guess. Until then, I always stood during the games ... hate having to sit, the viewing angle sucks. Not sure how ticket prices compare but it does not seem all that expensive to me.

Pile driving on the Polisseni Center is supposed to begin today or tomorrow. RIT has added a construction webcam: http://www.rit.edu/development/giving/powerplay/webcam.php
Glad to see they added the link... but it doesn't work so far though! Rumor: Renderings and floor plans to be added to the site in about 4 weeks.

It appears to work in at least some versions of IE, with questionable performance in other browsers.

Edit: It's down right now regardless though.

Even with QT I'm getting a 503 Service Not Available; it also won't load in Firefox.
