Paris Olympics

All and all a brilliant opening ceremony. The cauldron is the best I've ever seen. Who pitches a grand piano engulfed in flames on a boat in the river? Genius.

NBC is utter trash. Probably the worst I've ever seen in terms of selective censoring and failing to cover the athletes from all over the world. Instead focusing on the superstars and celebs, which was an extremely, extremely weird thing. Peyton Manning and Kelly Clarkson were a complete disaster.

So as it turns out, it was Assassin's Creed characters. Ubisoft is a French studio. They were the ones who had done all of the insanely detailed scans of notre dame before the fire and gave them to the French government to help rebuild the cathedral.

love it.

edit: as it turns out. This is a myth. They donated cash. But no models. :-(

As expected China wins gold in Womens synchronous diving but US women win Silver.

Oh yeah. I forgot about spoilers lol. :p

I'll see you all in a few weeks. Please try to keep spoilers contained to this thread. Thanks!

Water polo is awesome, what you can see isn't nearly as physical as what you can't see underwater.

In other soccer news, Canada's women's team has been hit with a 6 point deduction from FIFA, effectively eliminating them from the tournament (there's a chance they advance if they win every match).

The white bronco convoy to light cauldron in LA won’t hit as hard

SHUT THE **** UP KELLY CLARKSON a

That was me, too. And she didn't even add anything. The only thing she ever said was, "incredible." That's it. No matter the moment. Why not explain why it's so hard to perform with no rehearsals. Or what Celine Dion had to do to pull off that stunning performance with the physical issues she has. They hire "experts" to help explain things. All she said the whole time was, "incredible."

At least Manning tried to get across what the athletes must be feeling and how he can relate to it.

I appreciate Serena and all. But isn’t there a
better summer Olympiad who is more Olympic than pro legend? Nadia got the first 10. Carl matched the great Jessie Owens with 4 T&F golds in one games. Serena won some golds. Then again, Rafa?

I was very surprised overall how many non French people they used for their opening ceremonies. France has plenty of culture to not have to do that. If I were French, I would be ticked off. Lady Gaga? Celine Dion (yeah, she was great, but that's not the point)? They don't have enough of their own pop stars? And the athletes they chose? They have plenty of their own.

But that Olympic flame. Epic. And on the same site where the first hydrogen powered hot air balloon (1783?) in the world lifted off. Epic squared.

Wasn't gonna watch the men's and women's cycling time trials, cause I find time trials boring as hell for the most part, especially ones like this that are pan flat, but here I am.

At least it's raining, which might provide some drama.

I see the ceremony as more of a tip of the cap to French culture - all of it. We might not consider Lady Gaga and Celine Dion as French artists, but they certainly make us remember that French culture is also global. In that, I think the ceremony was fantastic. Or at least the parts I could hear without Clarkson guttering a WOW every few minutes.

Oh, I think the whole night was fantastic, too. And I most loved the idea that they brought the opening ceremony (perhaps only metaphorically speaking considering all the security and I'm sure some of those seats in the stands costs lots of money) out to the public instead of "hiding" it away in a stadium with exorbitant ticket prices.

I just don't get why it wasn't all "French."

But the French sure do know how to put on a light show. Whether the fireworks celebrating the Millennial or the lasers last night.
