Paris Olympics

It has to be a certain angle. Watched one this morning where they thought they were going to review to see if it was a correct takedown and then actually ended up disqualifying the guy because his head touched the ground, which you can’t do for safety reasons.

Another match was in like the 6th minute of OT and the woman from France was DQ’d for her third warning for having hands inside the robe.

But I’m with you, I never figure out what’s a good takedown and what’s not.

And the "angle" is very specific- I saw one match where one did the magic move and won. They didn't really explain what the move was, even in replay.

Another match, it was a race to who got 3 yellow cards awarded to the opponent.

The one OT match, it was some subtle hand movement that was awarded one point, which was the golden point to win. The analyst could not pinpoint the hand movement.

I guess I should be ok that it's a sport I don't need to spend time watching.

Yeah, I try to get into some of these because they only get shown every four years, but some the rules are so niche to the layman that it’s hard to get into even passively.

So watching some team handball. Croatia v Slovenia. Fun game to watch- a combination of a lot of sports.

Interesting observation- the Croatian coach spoke to his players in English. Like it's the one common language they all understood as a second language. Hm. Gone are the days when you learned your neighbors languages and now just english?

Rugby is one that's like that for me. I've got some stuff down but then there'll be a ruck, the referee will call something and I'll be sitting there like "huh?"

Easiest way that I've found to learn about other sports is to speak to someone who's an official for said sport. I've learn more about some sports at an international sports festival (Arctic Winter Games) sitting at the hotel bar talking with other officials than I have anywhere else.

This pommel horse Clark Kent lookalike is amazing.

it’s his only event

It's the same way in cycling. 30 years ago, French was the main language spoken in the peloton. If you were Belgian, German, American, whatever, you learned French to communicate with your teammates and coaches.

Now it's English.

Simple question- why is the US men's Volleyball team as good as they are when the men's game isn't anywhere near as popular (as in # of people playing) as women's? They are quite good, but it's not like there's a big group of people who play throughout the nation. It's kind of team California instead of team USA.

Not that it's a problem, but it's just interesting.

(which makes me wonder, will the B1G pick up men's Volleyball given the new schools have been playing it?)

A few decades ago, the FIA ruled the official language of Formula 1 is English. All public communications must be in English including pit to car radios (because the officials listen in on those) as well as all official press conferences. Drivers working their way up the ranks from some countries have to immerse themselves in English based studies because they know they have to become proficient in English.

Missed this score from a couple days ago. Zambia was up 5-2 in women’s soccer before Australia scored four in the last 30 minutes to win 6-5.

Tennis needs to have digital line calling. No idea why it's not right now, and not even with replays. Kind of absurd that they have the chair ump coming out of their chair to show the scuff of in or out.

Kept his glasses on until the last second. As a glasses wearing nerd like myself, I suspect he does pommel blind as a bat.
Read he has strabismus like myself (and my daughter), which means he can probably see a little but is definitely squinting his way through it.

They really like their tradition on the clay courts. But it’s funny you’ve got the US and Aussie Opens using automatic line calling and then the French still has the ump coming out of the chair to point.

Saw that the US Women's Rugby won bronze, which is cool because it's the first ever Olympic medal. But I swear it was just the other day when I saw they won to make it to the semis and then nothing. Who did they lose to and when? It had to have been yesterday.

Also, Women's Gymnastics - was there any doubt? Actually, I admit I had a little when Simone Biles had to get her calf wrapped. [typical American]Happy for them and glad they won gold because I'm getting a little sick of all the bronze!![/typical American :)

US men's soccer team moving on to the quarterfinals after a 3-0 win over Guinea. Will face Morocco on Friday in Paris.

France advances as well to play Argentina. That one will be fun because of recent of events (some Argentina players sang a racist song about France after their Copa America win and in the aftermath Argentina doubled down on it including their President).

Semifinals were today, they lost to New Zealand. Rugby Sevens plays multiple games a day (the games are only 14 minutes) and they knock the whole thing out in three days.
