Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

It wasn't meant to hurt. Just making an observation. Repetition, verbal tics, that sort of thing. I guess that's Tourette's though. Whatever.

Anyway, you can save us both the trouble just by recognizing that I wasn't addressing you. Can you manage that? Or should I just check back tomorrow?

You weren't "addressing me"? Seriously? Get over youself.

Personal attacks, in addition to being against the rules around here, bespeak a certain paucity of intellect, don't you think?

Pio, if that earlier post wasn't a clear example of asking a specific person a question, then I just can't help you.

As for the rest, I dunno if they bespeak of a paucity of intellect, but they sure as hell bespeak of a paucity of patience and respect. Sorry if that seems like an attack, but I'm going to call a spade a spade. Feel free to report it. If it gets me banned, so be it.

I'm going to just leave this thread alone for a while, either way. It's pretty obvious that the time for anything resembling intelligent conversation has long since passed.

All the political BS aside, I'm still glad the bugger is dead and is feeding bottom feeders like himself on the floor of the Arabian Sea.

Pretty high on the pompous scale you ask me. Maybe we could chip in and buy you a striped shirt and an Acme Thunderer--thisbusiness of the "wrong people" responding to your posts has got to stop. And all of this childish rhetoric because I had the temerity to criticize "the one." In addition to having only a passing relationship with the truth, you've got an inflated notion of your own importance. After all, you're the guy who was "going to check back tomorrow" to see if I was behaving myself. In your world, that stuff about autism and Tourette's and age is "intelligent conversation"? If it's all the same with you and Joy Behar, I think we'll just go ahead with the election next year anyway.

It warms me up everyday. It's too bad we couldn't kill him 3,000 times. And for the record, I salute our president (again) for giving this mission the green light, the incredibly talented and dedicated people in our intelligence community and the uncommonly brave SEALs who made it happen.

Pro tip: When you act like a child, don't be surprised when you're treated like one.

And if you still think this was about attacking "the one," then you apparently have the mental competence of one. I've already tried to explain where I was coming from. It was a waste of time.

Now go ahead. Respond to the anonymous internet person who challenged you. you know you want to. You just can't resist it, can you? It would go against everything about who you really are as a person . . . so be my guest and have the last word.

Why is it when I respond to an anonymous "internet person," it's proof of my many well documented shortcomings and when you do it, it's proof of how "smart" you are?

Killing, murder, its all the same no matter the word you use to classify it. Justified Murder.

No. Murder is a crime. According to you, that would make soldiers in battle (including the SEALs who clipped bin Laden) , and cops, and people defending their homes all criminals. You can't possibly believe that. I think it's important to be accurate in the use of words. Pro-life people often refer to abortion as "murder," and they are free to think so, but it's not.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

OBL is a casualty of war. He was NOT murdered.

It was a war he declared. (See: 1996 fatwa.)
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/terrorism/international/fatwa_1996.html

He would have killed every American if he had the means. That's war. He was a casualty of war. No more, no less.

Correct. I guess there's more a question of whether he was "assassinated,"

to kill suddenly or secretively, especially a politically prominent person; murder premeditatedly and treacherously.

Maybe (by definition 1). Can you "assassinate" somebody you are at war with? Truly it's all semantics: killing OBL was completely justified by any moral standard short of complete sainthood. He was actively planning on killing us in turn: this was self-defense.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

So it's been almost two weeks and AQ hasn't managed to do diddly. They may have tried something that we'll never know about, but if they did it wasn't successful.
Every day that passes without incident is evidence that AQ has been substantially weakened. They'll never be completely dead - it's much easier to kill a man than an idea - but hopefully the days when they could drive US foreign policy (and duct tape sales) are over.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

I'd like to agree but AQ still has their best 2 weapons: a sensationalist media to keep the fear on full boil and the ability of our demogogues to grasp power in the wake of tragedy, overreact, and grant them another global pledge class of recruits.

The longer we keep it on the D/L, the better. Let them exhaust themselves in internecine fights. "Just play it cool, boy. Real cool."

There was a time when libs would argue that they were distinguished from conservatives by the "nuance" of their arguments. Your position here doesn't strike me as particularly "nuanced." Basically you're arguing what Falwell and Robertson did (admittedly for different reasons) that "we brought it on ourselves." It's our fault it started and it's our fault if it continues. The whole war on terror was a terrible, unnecessary over reaction, brought about by our "demagogues." Bollocks.

Its good to know you get some joy about the rise of intolerant Islam Fundamentalism... its also good to know that no matter what we do, it'll give rise to "a global pledge class of recruits"... they are emboldened by our weakness, emboldened by our strength... gosh, they seem like the perfect enemy... or should I say bogeyman for your own belief set.

edit: what did AQ thrive on... the notional idea of the threat of the sinful west, some amounts of "life would be better under the caliphate", a good deal of the belief that dying in the name of Islam in warfare against the other (impure muslims, christians, jews) leads to heaven, etc. Frankly, these guys could generate "us vs. the world" on so many fronts... that's why these *******s took afghanistan in the first place... they didn't need an American or Russian excuse... they saw impure muslims, atheists, and other sinners they needed to convert in some craggy rocky region and dammit they had the guns to do so. Yeah, that has a lot to do with us, doesn't it.... oh, "back in the 80s we did this and that"... funny, we gave guns to a lot of people... but from the mid-80s through early-2000 there wasn't a lot of us there to cause problems... no, they needed to roughshod over women in the name if Islam and conquer an entire society in the name of Islam. Sure, they have larger goals... getting the sinful west out the Mid East... sure you'll put on the cloak of poverty and other social-class based constructs... but by and large its been about sin and the influence of sin. Fact of the matter is that the US is hardly the sole source for these guys... the only difference is we're the only one with the desire to take it to them... and for the most part we've kept them highly neutralized. Oh, and I should remind you that most of the terrorists over the last decade have come from relatively comfortable backgrounds and/or societies... how many engineers and doctors make up the terrorist roster sheet? too many.

On the other hand, western enablers have helped prop up likemind groups like the Muslim Brotherhood. But, please, keep on your line that "we're creating more of the enemy"... guess what... our mere presence in their world gives them grief... and the whole idea that it isn't Islam Islam Uber Alles gives them their call... that things would be better under a pure religious state gives them cause... just like Communism and the west, the Middle East will always have those who pine for Islam as a pure state because both dictates tell them all the great things they can have so long as they force everybody under its banner. Maybe its far more complicated than that?

---

Oh, if factions of Islam start to go with each other do you know what will happen? We're going to involve ourselves because we can allow for their to be a massacre on our watch... no more Rwandas... etc. That's what we did in Libya.

But of course, if only we didn't act so meanly... yeah... that's it... but let's ignore all the rest.
