Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Saw this morning where Nick Magyar, an OSU 2014 commit from Mentor OH, was the #4 pick in the USHL draft last night. Picked by Sioux City.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Second round not as violent as first round so it's getting boring.
Seriously though, I was disappointed the Panthers got knocked out as I enjoyed seeing Ohio State product Tyson Strachan out on the ice.

I agree, would have been nice to see more Buckeyes in the postseason. Are there any left at all? I'm not aware of any Buckeyes playing for these final eight teams. If they are, they must still be in the minors.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Getting back on topic, I would like to read some thoughts regarding reasonable expectations for next season. Those of you who are closer to the program than I am, please post your insights on here. I want to know what sort of record to expect, and are some of us wrong to expect an NCAA Tournament berth next season? How long will it take Coach Oz to get this program to a level where we are contending for conference titles and NCAA berths every season, frozen fours and national titles every three or four seasons? I know none of us know the exact answers to questions like these. I just want to see some more chatter, and to be completely honest, maybe it will help me temper my expectations for next season so that I am not so disappointed like I was by last season's second-half collapse.

I think we can expect an elevated level of play from the team this coming season and hopefully the burned hand teaches best on how not to let things slip so badly barring relevant injuries to key players. I think the real unknown is at what level will the goaltenders be playing at. Doing well in the Juniors doesn't always equate to the same in college. Our goaltending reserves last season did well but obviously had room to improve.

I wonder about goaltending as well. Will Hjelle establish himself as the starter, or will Chris Olson come in and earn the starting job from day one? Another burning question with me is will we have enough guys who can score so that we don't encounter the scoring slumps we've seen the past couple seasons. Some guys will start off hot in the first half of the season. Opponents will look to shut those guys down in the second half of the season. Will we have enough scoring depth to overcome the second-half adjustments that opponents will make? Can Coach Oz get guys to play smarter and not take dumb penalties at inopportune times in the games. These are my burning questions. Despite all these questions, I am looking very forward to this coming season and the seasons to come with Coach Oz. I still believe we made a great hire, and that he will get us to that level that all of us want to see with OSU Hockey.

No second half collapse!
Talent development and progression--i.e. players in Oz' system get BETTER, not stagnate.
Beat the teams we're supposed to beat and pull off a couple of big upsets.
First round bye in the CCHA
no worse than on the bubble for the NCAA

This all works for me.

Heeter is a loss, but they really bring almost everyone back the next 2 years.

These expectations sound reasonable to me.

Only lose to Miami 3/4 times :p I'm being a troll

My expectations for OSU are a little higher. What is your goaltending situation?

I'll settle for a split with Miami (haha). As for the goalies, Cal Heeter's backup, Hjelle (is his first name Brady?) will be back. It wouldn't surprise me if he gets beat out by Collin Olson, the recent gold-medal winning US U18 backstop. I believe he had three shutouts recently at Worlds. We may not be spectacular in net, but we should be solid. Our D-men will have to play smart and not take stupid penalties at inopportune times. In addition to the expectations listed by Sterling Cooper, I just want to see improvement as the season goes on. Going 1-11-4 down the stretch certainly does not constitute improvement. Hopefully we never see a second half like that again! My wife (BGSU grad) likes to remind me that it all started with the two shootout losses at Bowling Green in the first weekend of January. Woof.

FWIW It's Collin Olson. He might get some time at the end of the year or if Hjelle is injured, but Brady's the guy until then. Couple of nice d-men coming in, one very young and one older. Older guy is Craig Dalrymple - 6'5" and about 225 pounds. If nothing else he'll scare a few people.

I won't consider the season a success unless they get to the Joe for the last CCHA tourney. OSU won the first one 43 years ago and I'd like to be there to see them get a shot at the last one. And if they get that far then an NCAA bid would be likely.

Thanks for the correction on our incoming goaltender. I'll go back and edit. It would be great to get to the Joe in the CCHA's last season!

Did anyone get emailed for early season ticket reservations like last year?
