Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Looks like OSU got a commit from a goalie yesterday for 2013. Matt Tomkins from Sherwood Park, Alberta. Has an invite to the combine before this year's NHL draft.

Also picked up a promise from a Michigan kid, Dylan Pavelek, a center for 2014 or 2015.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

obviously everyone has taken the summer off......

The university announced their scholar athletes today (3.0 or better GPA for the year) and 20 of the 23 scholarship hockey players made the list. Proud of the guys!

Thanks for sharing Draighlicht ... and for getting this thread back to the first page! I am cautiously optimistic about the upcoming season. So many questions ... will we have solid goaltending (is there life after Heeter), will we get enough scoring to avoid the second half slumps that have plagued us in Coach Oz's first two seasons, can we finish high in the regular season standings and get to the Joe in the CCHA's final season? And then there's the PairWise ... can we crack the top 16 next season and get to the NCAA Tournament? Cannot wait until the season gets going so we can get the answers to these questions! I have said this before so I will sound like a broken record (us older dudes know what that broken record expression means), but I have always believed Ohio State Mens Hockey to be a sleeping giant. I have hope that Coach Osiecki is the leader that awakens that sleeping giant. I believe it is possible for Ohio State to win a National Title in Mens Hockey, always have. I have no reason to not think we could get to that level.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

new Puck Buck for the upcoming season per the official site.

Anthony Greco, a Faribault, Minn., native who has played with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the USHL the last two years, has
signed a National Letter of Intent to enroll at Ohio State and join the men's hockey program beginning in the fall, Mark Osiecki, Ohio State head coach, announced.

Greco is a highly skilled forward with top-end speed that creates a lot of offense, according to Osiecki. He led the Buccaneers with 24 assists and 46 points, ranking second with 22 goals, while playing in 58 regular-season games. He began his USHL career in 2010-11 with Waterloo, skating in 10 games before joining Des Moines for the final 32 regular-season games. He had 15 points in 2010-11, with 13 (7g, 6a) coming with the Buccaneers.

Joining Greco at Ohio State this August will be goalie Collin Olson, forward Tyler Lundey and defensemen Craig Dalrymple and Sam Jardine, who all signed NLIs last fall.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

This is good news! We need more guys who have the ability to get the puck in the net! This will help us avoid the second-half scoring slumps!

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

The USHL's Green Bay Gamblers (Osiecki's old team) just used its #5 overall pick in the draft to take Ben Gallacher.

Any word as to why? Transferring? Not ready and needs another year in juniors?

Just curious...

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Good question. He announced after this past season that he was leaving the team. Since his father owns the Portland franchise in the WHL and they own his WHL rights I assumed he was headed out there. I believe he's still on campus finishing spring quarter.

GB Puck Fan, how did the Gamblers season end up? I had heard they were in the USHL Finals vs Waterloo. I had heard they made the finals and remembered that Coach Oz had coached Green Bay before we hired him. You got to see Oz in action up there. What are your thoughts on the job he is doing here and what he can accomplish here at Ohio State? Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Make your way to the Resch Center tonight - the decisive Game 5 of the Clark Cup Finals! Only $5 per ticket. Hoping for a crowd of more than 7,000!

Gamblers won the Anderson Cup (regular season title). Won the Clark Cup (playoff title) in 2010, lost in the finals last year, and back this year.

Oz was always great at developing players, especially defensemen. The players didn't always like him on a personal level because he held them to task and made them responsible - i.e. you'd better be in at curfew, etc - but he made them better people and players.

Back then, the USHL teams had tenders to offer as part of the process, and he was always good at identifying talent and getting them to Green Bay. (And of course, getting them to Wisconsin. Don't think that Wisconsin's recent struggles aren't related to the departures of Osiecki and Kevin Patrick.

The second-half collapse that tOSU had last year baffled me a bit. (I'm sure I'm not the only one). That's not something which was typical of his teams. They were always very consistent.

He won a national title as a player. He won a national title as an assistant at North Dakota, IIRC. He won a Clark Cup here in Green Bay. He won a national title at Wisconsin as an assistant. Who knows what will happen, but he has always been successful - no reason to think he can't do that there.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2012: In like a lion, out like a lamb.

GB Puck Fan, thanks for the response. Believe me, the second half collapse had most of us baffled here, too! OTOH, we also are aware that Coach Oz has won titles everywhere he has been, and I believe most on here would agree with you that there's no reason to think that he can't or won't be just as successful here.

Actually the LSSU games in the 2nd half should be January 25-26 @ OSU. LSSU and OSU are the only two teams with open dates that weekend. Michigan plays Western that weekend as well.

Good guess, but I think the Quinn. games could be the first weekend in November. They have that weekend open also and that would avoid OSU having to open the season with three straight away series. Miami is showing open on that second weekend as well. That would give them at least one home game in October. Of course it that winds up being a bye week they could at least schedule the USNDTP team. Just don't think they will wait until November 9 for their first home game.

Michigan looks to be in early January since there will definitely be no bowl game for football to compete against.;)
