Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

I wonder where that leaves JB. Back to video or out in the cold?

If he wants to continue his coaching career I think he needs to go to Juniors to work on becoming a better coach. Not that he did a bad job for the Buckeyes, only someone on the team or close to the program would know for sure, but the team took several steps backward when he was added as an assistant last year. From a coaching standpoint you can lay most of the blame for that on Markell plus factor in Casey and Lammers leaving. I think Bitner needs to get out from under that cloud. He might not find another college asst. job but he could possibly find a head coaching job in the Jr AAA ranks, the NAHL or an assistant in the USHL. I would guess he needs more on his resume to progress.

It's a new and fresh start for the Coaching staff. It looks like they have put a good Coaching staff on the payroll.

Two Coaches from Minnesota , and kept one that knows all the ins and outs of this team. As we all know that Minnesota bleeds " HOCKEY. "

Good luck to the Coaching staff as the first year will be a tough year for a turn around season. :)

And another is lost. I liked the energy of Boots.

This is disappointing news. Seems kind of late to be signing, so you have to wonder what else is going on. Maybe Oz told him he would sit if he took stupid penalties next year and thus he didn't see himself playing much.:o

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

You hate to see this but when you bring in a new coach, there is always going to be some attrition, whether kids decide to move onto the NHL or they don't think they will fit into the new coach's plans. I haven't found any information on the specifics of what happened with Ian Boots, but I wish him the best. He may have taken some stupid penalties but as Twisted Wrister alluded to, he did bring some energy. I just hope we're done with the defections. So far there have been four. Hopefully, there won't be anymore.

Three thoughts on this...

1) If you believe the Q&A Oz did with College Hockey News, Daple, Bishop and Bartkowski were gone (even if not announced) before he was hired - or at least as he called it: it was a done deal "well in advance"

2) With regards to Boots - the 16th leading scorer on the 8th place team in the CCHA...with all due respect...is not a difference maker and can be easily replaced.

3) I hope this isn't the end of the defections. The team/program was/is, at best, mediocre. In many ways it (the entire program, not necessarily just the playing roster) needs a giant enema - I just hope Oz came to town with an industrial size Fleet bag and knows how to use it.

I read The College Hockey News article, Oz reviewed all players with Brent and Oz said "some won't make the cut." Boots skated in only 18 of the 39 games, only 3 others had less games. Boots seemed to be in the Markell doghouse much of the season. Almost sounds like Oz wanted to send an early message to the team and Boots was the easy candidate.

On the plus, Dries should also be able to step in and offer some immediate help. Also it looks like Brad Smith will be wearing the scarlet and gray this season. Smith was on track to be a Buckeye last season but it didn't happen. This kid is a scorer.

Has anyone heard about the Defenseman Crain coming in next year? I know he was scheduled to come. With Markell leaving i havent heard if his scholarship is being kept or not.

Crane said in an article I read about a month ago that he would be in Columbus this season if he wasn't drafted. There was an article in a suburban Chicago paper earlier this week that Chris Joyaux from that area would also play at OSU this coming season instead of going to the USHL. Not sure how accurate either article is but you can 'google' and find them.

Sounds to me like Oz is basically holding a large try-out camp and going to pick his own guys from those that show up.

Curtis Gedig and Alex S (don't ask me to spell it without looking) have the signed LOI's so I assume they will in the mix as well.

Also saw that Oz got a commit from the Wisconsin high school player of the year, Max McCormick who is apparently headed to Sioux City in the USHL. Haven't seem it listed on Chris H's site, but there's been several articles about it on the 'net.

Let me help, I think the S is followed by two Zs somewhere.
With only one senior the Buck were limited, with all the defections, we just will have to wait and see.

I"m not going to write this season off with Smith, Crane, Dries and Szz coming in. Still they will go only as far as the blue liners will carry them.

You are correct that this program has been mediocre (recently less than mediocre IMHO), and yet, these are the same guys who went to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 so they must not be all bad. I agree that Boots can be replaced but I can't agree with the contention that Oz bascially needs to just gut the whole team and start completely over. I think some of these kids can play and contribute. OTOH, it does open up some spots for the new recruits that have been mentioned. It will be interesting to see what kind of team we have this season. I don't expect us to suddenly win the Mason Cup, but I do expect to see some improvement as the season goes on.

If you're talking about Chris Crane (Green Bay Gamblers), he's not a defensemen...and I understand he still plans to be there this fall.

I liked Boots and don't want to see him leave, but on the other hand he may be the only Buckeye that I really didn't see any improvement from the previous season.
And remember every has to replace departures, not all team lost their top two scorers and top defensemen. Still these guys beat Denver, UM, Miami and Bemidji. No reason they can't compete. I heard two O-mans interviews and read two more, not once has he talked about rebuilding.
