Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

I'm proud of the Bucks to take Miami to game three. We went down with a good fight to the end. :)

I think if we would of played the first two periods like we played the third period we might still be playing due to a up-set over Miami.

I hope the team makes some good off season changes and the Bucks work hard and we have a better year in 2010-2011. :)

Did any of you central Ohio people see that the Columbus Dispatch today FINALLY gave the team decent coverage on sports page 3? They've been burying them in the back with mostly just stats nearly all season.

I wonder how much attention the coaching search will get?

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

I'm not as current on this as I used to be but doesn't when a player leaves school early it affects a formula the NCAA uses and can cost the team scholarships? So if 4 players jumped it could hamstring a new coach to a certain degree not having as much to offer as he should be able to financially?

I'm not 100% on it either, but I remember a couple of years ago when Kosta Koufos left the basketball team the problem arose more with the fact that he had enrolled for classes the next quarter and proceded to drop them to leave for the NBA. I think the dropped classes played more into the situation than the fact he was gone. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I'm going to guess more than girls High School cross country, less than a human interest story about a walk-on from the football team. Actually, probably less than both.;)

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

I haven't said much lately, but if half of what I hear is true then the whole coaching staff has to go. Jones and Lammers brought in too many talented players who have not developed or not been allowed to develop for a variety of reasons. The next coach has to be a leader of men and not a divisive manipulator who really does not have the players best interest at heart. Several of the NHL guys I spoke with are recommending their players sign and develop in the minors. I get why someone said that 4 of more were looking at transferring if this group is re-hired.

Sorry for the multi post, computer froze?! Weird hope this corrects it.

I think we finally earned some good " PRESS TIME " with the effort we gave against Miami in the playoffs. :)

Markell Out As Ohio State Hockey Coach

COLUMBUS, Ohio — John Markell's contract will not be renewed as head coach of Ohio State men's ice hockey, sources told 10TV Sports on Tuesday.
In 15-plus seasons behind the Buckeyes' bench, Markell compiled a 280-268-56 career record.
After four consecutive 20-plus win seasons from 2002-2005, the Buckeyes have had a winning record just once, in the 2008-09 season.
Under Markell, Ohio State hockey made six NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Frozen Four in 1998. The Buckeyes also captured the CCHA Tournament in 2004, the first such title for the school in 32 years.
Ohio State also significantly upgraded its recruiting under Markell.
National Hockey League players R.J. Umberger (Blue Jackets), Ryan Kesler (Canucks) and Dave Steckel (Capitals) all played for the Buckeyes, while others (Rod Pelley, Nate Guenin, Tyson Strachan, Sean Collins, Eric Meloche and Corey Elkins) have spent time in the NHL.
Markell was named interim head coach during the 1994-95 season, replacing Jerry Welsh. The interim tag was removed on May 22, 1995.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Needed to be done. Let's not lose sight of the fact that Markell ran an exemplary program in many regards, with a very high apr and never hearing of his kids getting into any kind of trouble. It's just that the on-ice direction of the program became unacceptable and an unfortunate, but necessary, decision needed to be made.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Do you guys think this will affect possible players leaving like Dalpe?

Perhaps. Honestly, given Markell's track record of talent development--or lack thereof--I'd say the Hurricanes might have told him to leave if Markell had stayed. Even in the worst case scenario, it's a little bit of collateral damage to the fundamentally necessary surgery.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

I know he hasn't been there a year, but is there any way we could we intice Dean Blais from UNO? Rumor was that he liked really living here in town when he was with the Blue Jackets. tOSU definitely has the $$$ to bring in a big name coach. Ken Hitchcock? :o

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era
