Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

UNH has an assitant you guys should look at taking (please, I beg you) with head coaching experience in the CCHA... (hint was at LSSU)

Scott "Switch" Borek. It's going to be an interesting search.

I never heard the "switch" part - what is that?

But yes him - please, please, please take him away...

Playoff game at the old ice rink. LSSU was being beaten badly, Borek kept switching goalies for some unknown reason during each whistle and the crowd started yelling "switch, switch" at each stoppage of play.

Ah, those were the days.

I appreciate where Markell took the program, but it was time for a new era to begin. Hopefully the players will be excited for the move and get behind whoever we bring in.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

The press release:

The contract of John Markell, head men’s hockey coach at Ohio State, will not be renewed, Gene Smith, Ohio State associate vice president/director of athletics, announced Tuesday. Markell has served at the helm of the Buckeyes the last 15 full seasons, beginning his tenure as the interim head coach in 1995.

“We appreciate John’s service to the institution but most importantly the young men he mentored,” Smith said. “He is a class person with great integrity. We wish him the best as he pursues his next opportunities.”

Chris Schneider, associate athletics director for sport administration, oversees the men’s hockey program at Ohio State.

“We will immediately begin the process to conduct a national search,” Schneider said. “We will take the appropriate time to find our next head coach.”

Markell was 280-267-56 in his career at Ohio State. He led the squad to six NCAA tournament berths, including the program’s first Frozen Four appearance in 1998, and to a CCHA tournament championship in 2004.

“I appreciate the opportunity I had to coach at Ohio State,” Markell said. “I’m proud of the young men I had the chance to coach and watch grow up both as hockey players and in life. I’m proud of the accomplishments we had as a team over the years. I wish nothing but the best to the Buckeye hockey program and the people around it. I’m thankful for everyone I worked with at Ohio State, including the assistant coaches, the administration and support staff and the alumni.”

I'm hoping that Gene Smith is looking at this as a legacy hire. Unless he stays quite awhile, odds are that he won't hire football, men's b-ball or women's b-ball coaches. Hopefully, he is viewing hockey as the sport where he can establish his legacy. All of which just doesn't jibe with the notion that we're going to rush out and name some Miami of Ohio assistant to the position.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

SC I think that makes sense. Who would Ohio State hire if Tressel or Matta was leaving? A head coach of another program, so it would follow that, that is what they would do for hockey. I am just not sure that hockey is a priority to Gene Smith like we would all like to believe. So they might hire someone else's asst. coach, associate coach or they might go be able to lure head coach from the AHL or an asst. at the NHL level?

Andy Geiger didn't leave him much to fix. From King Football, to men's and women's basketball to women's hockey to the Olympic Sports including our multiple national championship winning fencing program, the athletic department has never been stronger. Men's hockey has been the one sore point. With a lot on the line (increasing Big Ten Network interest in hockey, the potential BTHC), hopefully Gene Smith is viewing men's hockey, this hire and the future direction that this program takes as the area where he leaves his lasting legacy. Like I said above, Andy Geiger didn't leave him a lot of other areas to do so.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Wishing all the best to coach Markell and whoever else ends up out due to this move.

I too hope that the AD takes hockey and this search seriously, but I'm skeptical. It's a no brainer to not renew a coach that has been around a long time (read high salary) and has a few losing seasons. It makes it look like you care and you are doing your job. The true tests will be how they handle the search, if they offer the money it takes to get a name that can draw top recruits, and how they treat the program going forward.

I can tell you that if they continue to bus them across campus for every practice, kick them out of their rink when they earn home-ice, and treat them like a good-but-not-great team - that's what they will get. Understand the "plateau" agrument - it probably takes more than a coach to create a perennial national power.

John is a great person and his programs have had a lot of class. Here's to hoping we can still have all of that AND a few more wins every season!

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Markell is out at Ohio State.

He brought quality recruits to tOSU despite a nearly empty building every game.

MSU falls short of the CCHA finals for the 3rd straight year and suffers its most embarassing weekend in decades.

Hmmmmmmmm

As I said earlier, Markell's program was exemplary (apr, grad rates, character of his athletes) in every way except the on-ice results and talent development. It was an unfortunate decision but one that I feel was necessary. I too hope that Markell gets another shot somewhere.

Are you thinking OSU is going after Rick Comley? :)

When Russ Hellickson was replaced they went with a young, head coach from another program (Tom Ryan at Lehigh). When 143 year old Jim Brown finally put his putter away as the golf coach they hired the top assistant at Oklahoma State (Donnie Darr). There is precedent for both scenarios.

With NCAA regs being what they are I doubt that they reach into the pro ranks.

One other thing to consider is "how quick the fix?"

Do you spend bigger money and go after a prominent head coach who can right the ship in a hurry or do you bring in a younger guy and allow him to gradually build the program?

Lots of directions and lots of choices.

One thing I do know is that it will most likely take at least a month. The job posting must go up within five days.

OSU: 'We Haven't Been Consistent'

by Adam Wodon/Managing Editor

All season, Ohio State coach John Markell did his job in the last year of his contract, uncertain if he'd be renewed. This week, he found out that he would not be.

Ohio State let Markell go because it decided it the program was as successful as it could be.

"Our goal for our program is to have a men's ice hockey program that's consistently competing for a championship, and recently we haven't been that," said Chris Schneider, associate athletics director for sport administration, who oversees the men’s hockey program at Ohio State.

"John has done very good things for our program and student athletes, but what we strive for all of our programs is that we're consistently competing for championships. That consistency hasn't been there."

While there have certainly been questions about Markell's ability to lead the program to another level, there are also questions about the resources such a huge Big Ten school puts into its hockey program. But Schneider believes the resources are there.

"The resources we have provided to our program are what make us capable of competing for championships," Schneider said. "We have a well-funded program, very well supported, and we feel we can be successful."

The Buckeyes play at the spacious Value City Arena, which was also home of the 2005 Frozen Four. It rarely fills the 17,000-plus capacity, and in fact, averages less than 5,000. So the question is whether the NHL-sized arena is a blessing or a curse to the program.

But there are no plans for changing arenas, Schneider said.

"It's not too big," he said. "When our program has been successful, our fan support has been there. ... This decision was not made financially. ... We'd definitely like to see the attendance higher, anyone would like to see more support in the building, but that's a natural relationship to success."

The next step for Ohio State is to form a search committee for a new coach. According to Schneider, that will consist of staff members in the athletic department, some directly associated with hockey and some not, a current OSU head coach from another sport, and two members of the current hockey team.

The position will be posted, and the school will accept applications, until one week after the Frozen Four. The committee will then determine three to five people to bring in for interviews. Schenider expects the position to be filled by early May.

Though Schneider said the type of person Ohio State wants has not been identified, it is possible the school will proactively reach out people it has an eye on.

"There's potential for that, but I can't obviously comment on specifics right now."

Busboy where have you been all season?

Must agree that John was a class guy who ran a clean program and graduated most kids, that said, this needed to happen. John will land on his feet, most likely at BG. If you think about it, BG is pretty much in the same situation that OSU was in when John took over. He could get them up and back to respectibility then retire from there.

Thank you John for all you did and hopefully we can find someone to take us to the next level with class.

And the hits keep comin...
http://www.westerncollegehockeyblog.com/2010/3/18/1379819/bishop-signs-with-montreal

Interestingly enough he didn't sign with Montreal because he wanted to play for the Habs, but he wanted to join a local drama troupe to work on his acting abilities. He was pretty good at the dives on ice, so I think that might work well for him.
not to mention he was pretty good at scoring points against miami.:)
