Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Mrs. Spiehler and I were up in BG Sunday for the game against Wilfrid Laurier (the 4-3 win does not bode well). We were walking around between periods when she said, "I saw Markell." He had walked right past us and I was none the wiser. I hope he wasn't spreading any bad mojo.

Maybe he was there schmoozin for any kind of job. I heard he was helping with player evaluations for the little kids playing in CAHA. Oh how the mighty have fallen!

One of the recently departed has landed on his feet in the WHL.....(or his skates?)

The Prince George Cougars are pleased to announce the addition of 20-year old forward Taylor Stefishen to the roster.

Stefishen was a sixth round pick of the Cougars in the 2005 Western Hockey League Bantam draft, selected 112th overall. The 6’0”, 185 pound product of North Vancouver, BC, joins the Cougars after playing two seasons of NCAA Division I hockey with the Ohio State Buckeyes of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. In 40 games at Ohio State, Stefishen collected eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points and had 14 penalty minutes. Stefishen was selected by the Nashville Predators in the fifth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, 136th overall.

Any word on how Crane has looked so far? I worke with a guy who coached him and he said he will be very scrappy and work hard in the corners. Just wondering if he is making strides to be in the line up.

He was one of the ones I noticed. Your description above is pretty much the way I saw him.

Might have guessed the Belanger one by the quote after the game from Oz about penalties, but the Folkes and Stefishen ones are quite a surprise.

I did notice what seemed to be a difference in the teams. Gray seemed to have what will be the starters and regular players, while Scarlet seemed to the "also on the team" guys. Also noticed a couple players switched at "half-time" so not sure the reasoning with that. I really wondered what the Gray team was thinking when the Scarlet team got the lights and the video for the starting lineup announcement.

Yes, the game was pretty boring, but I was amazed at the crowd for a cold, dreary night. It did feel good to get back into the swing of things though.

just curious who was one each roster?

So, 16 forwards and 7 D on the roster. Over/under on another D joining the team? Awfully late in the year, but typically teams carry 9... The 7 we have will no doubt have to work pretty hard.

7 could be enough, but Duddy seems to get injured every season. Reed, Toy and Sims are all experienced enough to hold the fort down. A F could also be more to the blue-line, maybe Arniel, he has some size.

Roster updated on the OSU website: Belanger, Folkes, Steffishen gone. Wow.

Steffishen showed the most promise of the three. Folkes was a hard-nosed, heads up type that I liked. The Sunday game against ND a couple of years back, Dusty broke his stick, Folkes was the only Buckeye to noticed, pass his stick off and usty made a stick save. Still his bad penalty at Miami last season seemed to charge up the Skins to the win. Belanger, nothing about him stands out.

I can't help feeling bad for the guys though. It must have been a gut kick when given the news. It certainly was an attention getter for the rest of the team and shows who's large and in charge. Oz was brought in to bring achievement and consistency to the program and it looks like the message is perform or your replacements will give me what I want.

Yeah, Duddy has been snake-bit the past 2 years. When he is healthy he is one of the best defensive D-men out there. If he can develop some offense, he has the potential to really be a difference maker. Barts had an amazing year last year, but for my money Reed was the most consistent and balanced D we had last year. I would expect the same this year. Sims has huge up-side WRT offense, which it seems will be a point of emphasis based on Oz's comments. Toy - I can't figure him out. Great shot. Hits like a freight train. Poor decision making. Does not appear to have the quickness or stamina he will need to compete, if his performance in the intrasquad game was any indication. Totally puzzling to me. Oh well, we shall see how it shakes out.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

The MAGIC carpet free ride was over when Coach Markell rode it out of Ohio last year.

" GO BUCKS GO. "

Don't understand that commit. Markell had no problem showing Maiani, Canpbell, Fillion, Rudasill and Gorham the door when deemed necessary. I remember Markell suspending Dalpe for a game and benching Fistche his senior year. The real line of disciple doesn't come when fronting year fourth liners or healthy scratches, it how you deal with players you need to count on.

The situations with some of the players mentioned wasn't discipline. One of the dismissals almost got the program sued. The only reason it didn't happen was the family didn't have as deep pockets as Jim O'Brian when he had to vindicate himself. The athletic department did what they usually do to cover their behinds, they lied about the facts and admitted no wrongdoing.

For those of us who "live and die" for our favorite college hockey team, there comes a time when that is secondary. And that time came to Pioneer fans this weekend.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — University of Denver center Jesse Martin sustained three neck fractures in Saturday night's hockey game at North Dakota and was transferred to a Minneapolis hospital this morning where doctors are deciding if emergency surgery is required to relieve swelling of the spinal cord, the player's father said.
