Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Scarlet-Grey game was a snoozer. Don't think there was 100 spectators there. I understand OSU foots most of the bill to bring in a Canada team for an exhibition and not bringing one saves dollars. Bring in the OU or Kent club teams. They would came here for $500 buck, at least you would see a more lively contest.

Perhaps with Markell's departure so will his tradition depart of never playing his #3 goalie during the kid's entire career except for 30 seconds in the last home game of his senior year providing we have a comfortable lead.

You go with the goalie that gives you the best chance to win, that was never Lauderdale. Most team's number 3 G know that may might never play...never. There was never any reason to play Micheal last season, that was a good thing. That counts as red shirt and he now has four years remaining.

Osiecki comments.....

"Offensively, Alex Szczechura did a lot of things well for a freshman on the ice and left a good impression on the staff. On the other hand, a lot of upperclassmen accounted for the negative aspects by taking poor penalties."

Poor penalties seemed to be what this team did best last year.

I don't remember Reed, Reed Toy Boyd, Soma or Albert being broken, there is talent there to work with. Hopefully Oz, is just doing a Tressel down play of everything.

Only the coach knows for sure what he really meant but I wasn't implying they aren't talented players but that he might be suggesting that it may be past the point of unlearning them and getting them to fully adapt to his system. Tom Fritche was very vocal to some people his senior year that he knew how to play hockey and what Markell was shoving down the teams throat was crap and that's pretty much a direct quote.

Players always know best. In his senior year Fritche looked liked second liner for a D2 team. Where is he now. The way I take the Oz statement is that he simply wants is to get in his style of players, really have no problem with that.

Fritche never was the same after his colitis. I have no doubt we'll become the program we've always dreamed of under OZ, the only question is how long until it gets there.

Any Buckeye fans planning on making the trip to Hamden next weekend? I have a local friend who is an alum from Ohio State and I assured him there would be some friendly's in the place.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Team Wisconsin Major/Appleton United (Wisconsin) defenseman Cliff Watson has committed to Ohio State. I have a story up on the commitment here. I just submitted an update to the story with more information and a photo which I hope will be updated tonight, and if not will definitely be updated tomorrow morning.

In talking to Cliff today it sounds like the bottom line for his choice was Coach Osiecki. He was also offered by Miami of Ohio and Wisconsin had interest but wanted to see him play more.

I'm not sure if you are aware, but Coach Osiecki had offered Team Wisconsin Major/Notre Dame Academy defenseman Tim Davison a scholarship a few weeks back but Davison chose Wisconsin. Here's an article on that commitment and here's an interview with Tim Davison.

Roster updated on the OSU website: Belanger, Folkes, Steffishen gone. Wow.

Might have guessed the Belanger one by the quote after the game from Oz about penalties, but the Folkes and Stefishen ones are quite a surprise.

I did notice what seemed to be a difference in the teams. Gray seemed to have what will be the starters and regular players, while Scarlet seemed to the "also on the team" guys. Also noticed a couple players switched at "half-time" so not sure the reasoning with that. I really wondered what the Gray team was thinking when the Scarlet team got the lights and the video for the starting lineup announcement.

Yes, the game was pretty boring, but I was amazed at the crowd for a cold, dreary night. It did feel good to get back into the swing of things though.

Wonder if Coach Oz knows who led the OSU club team last season. Kid had 33 goals and 41 assist in 27 games.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Looks like the wake up call has been sent.;)

Coach OZ said in his interview that there was some upper classmen that acted like they didn't want to be here. The message has been sent for this year and every year that all players will have to earn there spot on this team.

The MAGIC carpet free ride was over when Coach Markell rode it out of Ohio last year.

" GO BUCKS GO. "

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Well looks like he is not going to mess around with laziness. I still think there is enough talent on this team to compete and maybe steal a win or 2 against the top teams in this league. Special teams must improve for them to have a chance.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Mrs. Spiehler and I were up in BG Sunday for the game against Wilfrid Laurier (the 4-3 win does not bode well). We were walking around between periods when she said, "I saw Markell." He had walked right past us and I was none the wiser. I hope he wasn't spreading any bad mojo.
