Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Slightly offtopic. I believe OSU was underrated last year. Just look at who they beat. Had a few key losses (I forget who now) been wins, easily a top 20 team. Had Dalpe and Bishop(Glad to see him go though, not the most classy player) stayed they would have been contenders for top 10 and beyond this year. That being said, maybe they can do it anyway.

The best word to describe last year's team is "inconsistent." They beat some very good teams and they lost to teams they should not have lost to. That's been the problem for several years.

I will be happy this year if I see consistent and honest effort in every game. Of course I'll be happier if they win.:D

Thanksgiving WE series against Alaska to be played at Nationwide, I guess to avoid the FB crowd, but will be a low attended series where ever they are played. Why not have some fun, play them in the Ice Rink.

Boy wish they would live a little and maybe some of the football crowd would come over to the schott after another victory over michigan.

I think there are several things in play that weekend... First Mens Basketball plays at home Friday vs Miami... the transition to or from ice would be possible... but the game is on BTN at 4 pm.. so an odd time probably part of a basketball day on BTN... so the Buckeyes play a 1:45 game downtown...not all bad.....On Saturday, the Football gametime is still up in the air do to TV...so I think they had to make other plans just from a practical standpoint-----I think if the FB gametime was known, they would be playing on campus either before or after.

The football game will be played at noon. Only 1 time in the last 30 yrs that i can think of that the michigan game has not been played at noon when its in columbus. The 2006 game was at 330 and that was a special game as we all know. I forgot about the basketball game on friday afternoon. Once again the hockey team takes a back seat to other events in the schott. Maybe one day they will get a arena of there own so they dont have to move. I was looking forward to attending the michigan game and then going down the street for some hockey.

Forget where they are playing, I can't wait to how they play under the new coach. My hope is that we see an improved product on the ice...committed to playing for each other and the team. Just a few more weeks and it's hockey season.

My thoughts too lets hope to see a more aggressive style at both ends of the ice with all players committed to playing both ends.

OSU got a new recruit, Sam Jardine out of Camrose in the AJHL. Looks like a good one. Don't know if he is related to Nick Jardine who played for Miami a while back. Just an FYI.

Have practices started yet? Any news or other info? I see they posted the new volunteer coach the other day, so it doesn't look like they have a goalie coach on staff.

Blue Jackets start their prospect tourney today. One of the G, Riley Gill.

Equally interesting, for the Carolina Hurricanes: F, Zac Dalpe.

On a side, unrelated-to-this-thread, note, the prospects tourney in Traverse City is an enjoyable event. Great for people-watching (last year, the BlueJackets brain trust (Ken Hitchcock, et. al.) was sitting right behind me) as well as for seeing a lot of former college hockey players trying to make it to the next level.

My son saw some of their practice's which are at this point led by the captains, the coach's can't participate yet. Mind you that you can't be too critical this early on but he observed a number of area's lacking so far. In their inter-squad scrimmages he reported not much in the way of speed, on close range shots very little hitting the open corners of the net, most shots into the goalies breadbasket. On longer range shots not a lot of mustard on them and too many of the guys telegraphing their passes. We all hope for a better year but it will take some time to get "Johnny Hockey" out of their system and for the new coach to drill into the guys his way so if we need to look ahead a year yet for our star to start to rise I can accept it providing in the long run the team performs the way we all hope for. Coach Osiecki had an open house last week for the hockey alumni and it was very impressive on his passion and determination for bringing the program to prominence. Recruiting will be key! He did well recruiting for Wisconsin but as I've been told that's rather a self sell when you ask a kid if he wants to play for the Badgers, getting top talent here will require more effort but if he's good he should be able to convince a few on what he intends to do here and get them in on the ground floor. :)

I guess I should cancel the season tickets since after a couple practices without the coaches present the team looks slow. I was expecting more from the new coaches than this! Is it too late to bring in Paul Pooley?;)

WHAT! You bought season tickets! Talk about a leap of faith. Well you're screwed as we all know they don't give refunds, lol. I almost feel sorry for the team though. I think Oseicki will work them harder than they've ever been worked before to get them up to his standards.

Anytime in the past they've done that there have still been tiny crowds...

Moving it to Nationwide makes a lot of sense IMO....
1. You don't have to mess with the crowd of football (true hockey fans will appreciate that).
2. Conversion crew won't have to work double to switch hockey/bball over.
3. It makes for a great hockey doubleheader Friday with the Red Wings/ Jackets that night...
4. Nationwide is the premier hockey venue in town. Say what you want about VCA... Maybe it's just me, but I enjoy breaking out and heading over to Nationwide once or twice a year... Great bars before the game and great environment after...

Personally, I am looking forward to the weekend

Over/Under on Captains? Dark-horse candidates?

Somma - C
C. Reid - C
Boyd - A
Simms -A

Dark-horse forward: Schneider (Junior + work ethic)
Dark-horse defense: Duddy (Junior + work ethic)

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Any mention of when Skoff is scheduled to joing the team? Dusty is a senior, Heeter is a junior, Gibson comes in next fall after Dusty leaves (assuming he is still committed to OSU)... I wonder if Skoff will come in Fall 2012? or come in with Gibson next year and bump Michael? Skoff is definitely a gamer with a solid upside. Would not be a bad situation to have 3 talented goalies pushing each other (Heeter, Gibson, Skoff). Ya win a lot of games if you keep your opponents off the board.

Skoff played for the U-18 Pgh Hornets in the Tier I Elite Hockey League 2008/2009. Wasn't really spectacular but didn't have much in front of him. Played last season for the Sioux City Muskateers in the USHL with a 21-19 record, 2.59 GAA, .903 SV% and 2 shut outs.

I heard Gibson is not going to OSU but will be playing in the OHL instead. Skoff and Gibson have the same private goalie coach. Skoff might have been recommended as a replacement for Gibson by their goalie coach.
