Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

I heard Gibson is not going to OSU but will be playing in the OHL instead. Skoff and Gibson have the same private goalie coach. Skoff might have been recommended as a replacement for Gibson by their goalie coach.
If you check the roster for the U-18 team it lists Gibson as uncommitted to a college. That leaves us with the chicken/egg question. Did Gibson de-commit because Skoff committed or did they go after Skoff because Gibson de-committed?

Interesting that after years of having to watch Canadian junior hockey to keep up with OSU recruits that 'plan' seems to have shifted. There are only two Canadians on the list, the two kids from Camrose AB.

As for Skoff, he's considered one of the top goalies in the USHL. He played in 50 of their 60 games last year so he appears durable as well as talented.

Some good pics of the players at "the official OSU site" helping with the base layer of ice and helping to paint the ice.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Ive been to a couple of games after a football game and i know what your talking about. One of the hockey games was even against michigan and still didnt draw 10000 i dont think.

Several years back OSU was hosting Michigan in hockey, most likely the game klbaum was referring to, and it was a mid afternoon start time for a home football game and the cops absolutely forbid any incoming traffic anywhere close to the schott near the end of the football game so most people couldn't get to the hockey game until halfway through the second period. Although anyone who complained about missing half the game were given free tickets to another home game of their choice.

Skoff played for the U-18 Pgh Hornets in the Tier I Elite Hockey League 2008/2009. Wasn't really spectacular but didn't have much in front of him. Played last season for the Sioux City Muskateers in the USHL with a 21-19 record, 2.59 GAA, .903 SV% and 2 shut outs.

Perhaps with Markell's departure so will his tradition depart of never playing his #3 goalie during the kid's entire career except for 30 seconds in the last home game of his senior year providing we have a comfortable lead. Every goalie we recruit should come here with the certainty he has a chance to earn playing time and isn't just practice fodder.

The guys are practicing all this week on the big ice over at the schott. It's nice at this time of the year they can get the time in there not having to share the facility with the basketball teams yet.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

We're #8.

We're #8....

Let the chant begin.

CCHA coaches and media agree for a change. Fair distance between OSU and the 7th pick in each poll and a good distance between OSU and 9th in each poll.

Sounds about right to me since no one knows what to expect.

Tickets arrived in the mail today!!! I think this is the earliest we have ever had them, a new beginning perhaps???

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Quite a lot of interesting audio on the OSU hockey site. Enthusiasiasm from players (Boyd, Carlson, C. Reed, Serge) and guarded assessment from Oz. Definite emphasis by the coaching staff on developing character in the players. I sense much less optimism on Oz's part regarding potential team performance... though some positive comments on the forwards (Albert in particular) and what likely will shape up to be a spirited competition for time in goal between Dusty and Cal.

I found it a bit surprising that no vocal leaders have emerged from the rabble yet. I guess there has been so little time for players and coaches to really interact that the players are being pretty reserved until greater familiarity comes to pass? Naming of the captains should be interesting. Can't wait for Saturday!

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

It sounds like there will also be 2 or 3 players on the chopping block. These players will be cut after the Saturday team scrimmage. Go " BUCKEYES " GO.

Re: Ohio State Offseason 2010: (hopefully) The Dawn of a New Era

Didja see Osiecki's quotes from the CCHA teleconference? [http://www.ccha.com/ccha_head_coaches_conference_call_quotes.aspx]

On taking advantage of inheriting a team with 11 seniors and six juniors
Yeah, we have a lot of upperclassmen, I mean, 17 of them, which I’m trying to get to know each and every one of them. ... I think in the big picture of our program, we’re able to move out 11 seniors and add a new culture, and bring these kids in at a relatively young age. We won’t have much youth this year, but at least next year we can bring in some youth and create that culture that we’re talking about here.
Sounds like he can't wait to be rid of the current players, or maybe just the seniors. Nice message to send to the team.

Another way to to read it would be " Markell has ruined the older players beyond repair, we can only train players who haven't been exposed to all the crap that was here." It seems like he thinks it's too broken to fix.
If he needs freshmen to be the foundation of the team he wants to build it's going to take several years to even begin to get the team to the level the coach wants. We've waited this long........

...Or it's a motivational statement (tool) to send a message to the senior class that he expects more than they have given in the past.

Truth be told it's probably a mixture of the two. For whatever reason this senior class has underperformed and I think his statements reflect that. I look at it as more of a challenge to them to take their game up another level or three.

Just read the quotes and it sounds like he is looking right past this year and into next year. How could someone as a senior come back without doing any training? If that is what really happened, then maybe they shouldn't be there.

I like your angle on it.

I was told last spring all games would be back on the radio, but nothing was finalized. So in other words, who knows. Embarrassing last season to be THE ONLY D1 hockey program without a radio outlet.

I don't remember Reed, Reed Toy Boyd, Soma or Albert being broken, there is talent there to work with. Hopefully Oz, is just doing a Tressel down play of everything.
