Ohio State 22-23 Are we Better Than You Think?

That was some series. That win tonight almost all but locks up a spot in the Ncaa's. With only 1 more loss possible and if they do lose it will be on the road to a higher ranked pairwise team they shouldnt drop much. After losing in the way they did last night and then having a goal called back then falling behind they showed a lot of grit and heart to win this game. On to AA next week cant wait to see how this one goes.

That was a siege for sure. Just watching those 3 games was exhausting. Congrats, Buckeyes. We're proud of you. Keep it going.

Also, good luck to Penn State in the NCAA's.

With all those challenges reviews by the refs one of our players commented afterwards it felt like they were playing against the ref's as well against Penn State.

Totally true, that first no goal call due to "goaltender interference" was total bullshit. Ohio State was definitely playing 6 vs 10 in this one.

Penn State is still two spots above us in the pairwise and slated for a 2 while we're a 3. We win the series over a higher ranked team and end up a spot lower than where we started the weekend? OK, now I'm convinced that their formula is completely flawed. Maybe we can win in Ann Arbor next weekend and drop down to a 4 seed!

The ambiguity of goaltender interference is something hockey needs to deal with. Even among the "experts" they can't agree with what is/is

If it isn't called real time, it shouldn't be allowed to be reviewed since what IS goalie interference is 100% subjective. If it is called, it is reviewed to make sure the offensive player wasn't pushed into the goalie by a defender. If there is a scrum in front of the net, goalie interference could be identified/called almost every time.

This is a sore subject for Michigan Tech fans. We lost* the league championship deciding game because of a "goaltender interference" call. I know you guys won the series, but because it isn't a clear call like offsides, it can seem like the refs are directly influencing the game.

*Seasons don't come down to one game and games don't come down to one play/call. It is hard not to blame a call like that when a team only needs to go to OT for a share of the cup. Instead they lose in regulation by a goal.

I've seen more GI reversal calls on coaches challenges this year than any other challenge type. It's too much! We had one in particular out of the handful of overturns this year in MN where our players skate grazed, and I mean grazed the other team's goalie's toe and they waived it off. I can just imagine how these calls could ruin a game in the regionals/frozen four.

The only thing i could see that would have been called was the stick of the player in front of the net made contact with the goalies pad and if it did that is going to be called.

Had they swept them they would be ahead but since they lost one game and road wins are weighted more than home wins they are still behind them. I dont see a way they finish ahead of them without winning the title.

Heard that Wisconsin fired Tony Granato today. Anyone think they will come after Rohlik? I definitely don't want to lose Coach Rohlik, but seems like a lot of coaches want to return to their alma maters, and there's no amount of cash you can throw at them to keep them. I would be lying if I didn't say I was a little concerned. I will admit, I was a little unsure about Coach Rohlik the first couple years, but think he has done a good job building the program. He led the program to the Frozen Four in 2018 and has won the BIG Ten Title. This season we finished third, which was not bad considering we were picked to finish below that. No one was going to catch a loaded Minnesota team this season. Anyway, I would be interested to hear others' thoughts on the Wisconsin opening and if you think they will make a play for our coach.

He's been in Cbus almost twice as long as he was in Madison and was in Duluth for 10, he's doing a good job, and has half the pressure... I think he says thanks, but no thanks... and maybe gets little bump in salary for not getting a new rink and leaving.

Rhols has one fault as a coach, he can't recruit. Can anyone recall from the prospect websites the last time a top ranked prospect had Ohio State on his list of possibilities? He has to coach up what he gets. Muzerall comes here to coach the women and gets the absolute top tier players in the US AND Canada. And she does it with the old barn as her home ice too! The Schott's a palace by comparison. If any coach deserves a bump in pay it's her before anyone else!

The argument would be, OSU is not a blue blood. What does OSU have to offer a top prospect that the U of M's, BU, BC, DU, NoDak,... have to offer? The Wisconsin faithful think they are bluebloods and being in Madison makes anyone a better recruiter.

You women's coach is doing an amazing job. How she hasn't been hired away is beyond me.

This is true. We need both a new arena and a couple of trips to the FF to see what Rohls can really do. We'll never recruit the way that Minnesota or Michigan (thanks U16 camp) do, but we need a steady stream of at least a couple of 1st or 2nd round draft picks every year to build around. Until then, our ceiling is probably second place B1G finishes and maybe a 2 seed.

And he has won without the top tier recruits. What has all those top recruits won at Michigan? You dont have to get the top recruits to win.

Just keep in mind those 1st rounders tend to be a 1 and done year of college. They can help a team, and man, they are fun to watch, but it's also how you get the youngest team in college hockey. Something can be said for maturity, look at how well Quinnipiac seems to be doing with their roster with 10 players born in the 90s.

Then why in the past ten years has there been no national championship? I will say this though, the COVID cancellation did kill the chances of the one roster that could have won it.
But the fact coach Muzerall for the women's team does get the top recruits and has a national championship give a degree of validity to my point.
Lastly don't you think it odd that in 59 years Ohio State men's hockey has NEVER won the national title? It's nice we have won regular season and tournament titles but those aren't the brass ring.

Quite simply, the athletic department didn't care about hockey and made no attempt to build off its periods of success (Pooley Brothers, first Frozen Four). To be fair, the AD didn't give a damn about any Olympic sports in the 70s and 80s, and that only changed when Geiger showed up. Still, even after Geiger's arrival, hockey was clearly the redheaded stepchild. When it became clear that Markell had lost any momentum he had and was a piss poor developer of the talent that came into the program in the wake of that Frozen Four (Steckell and Umberger seemed to regress every year), he was allowed to just coast on for years until the program was truly terrible. Honestly, I haven't seen anything out of Gene to think that he gives a rat's ass about hockey. Only Muzz's NC has forced him to do something about the women's program.
