Schells's sampler which sadly has no Snowstorm, but is otherwise great for $11.99 for 12.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I'm in Rochester (Minny) for a tourney and am wondering if there's any local or state beers that I can't get at home that I should pick up as a souvenir?

I typically enjoy lagers, non-pale ales, stouts and porters.

Not a fan of wheat, flavored or Optimator types.

Is the beer still 3:2 here or whatever that was where they're weaker? Been a LONG time since I drank in this state. Believe that the bar time was still 1:30 the last time...

Any help would be appreciated. :)

The grocery stores sell the 3.2% beer, liquor stores are the only places allowed to sell the normal stuff outside of bars.

Schell's, Grain Belt and Summit are the three biggest MN brews right now, with Grain Belt being bought by Schell's a few years ago.

Grain Belt offers, basically, three varieties: Grain Belt Light, Premium and Nordeast. Light and Premium are traditional American lagers while Nordeast is darker, kind of slightly sweet, but drinks much like a lager. Nordeast is, by most estimates, their best offering, then it's Premium ( AKA "Premo").

Schell's offers a whole spectrum of beers under the Schell's name. Fire Brick is my favorite of their full-year brews, a red ale that's not very hoppy - I'm not wild about overly hoppy beers. They do excellent seasonal beers, too, but a lot of those have the various spices added into them at this time of year.

Summit is known for its pale ales primarily, but they have some good seasonals and stouts, too. I really like their oatmeal stout.

After those, the other beers in this state are mostly regional within the state itself as they're still growing. Surly is the probably largest of the next tier, but it's mostly different varieties of really hoppy ales.

This seems like something that the USCHO crowd would do :p

Interesting to see how they use the wine barrels to develop the final product...

Toured their place last time I was out there. It's a good whiskey.

What's really fun is, you can sign up to be on the bottling crew. You do your shift, and IIRC they give you a bottle of their whiskey and lunch. I thought there was something else, too, like you get to initial each bottle you do or something, but am unsure.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Brother in law got me a bottle of Glen Moray single malt for Christmas this year. Nothing special, but it's from a guy who isn't much into anything that isn't beer so he gets tons of effort points for getting a single malt.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Tried the Leine's Vanilla Porter. Good stuff.

As a gift for Mr., I bought him a bottle of the MacCallen 12.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Thanks! I'll be heading to the liquor store today.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

If you see Sugar Shack, and you like maple flavors, I highly recommend getting a 6er of that.

Yes indeed. And the Vanilla Porter is one of the very few Leinie's beers I actively look to buy every year.

And if no one has mentioned it, the Buffalo Sweat Vanilla Bean Stout is outstanding.

Buffalo Sweat is a Kansas brewer. He was asking for MN-based breweries.

Well, I learned something new. Apparently White Creme de Cacao isn't white at all. That totally threw me when the wife sent me shopping for it. Needed some because she wanted to make pink squirrels. And I'm man enough to admit they were pretty good. Of course I was double fisting with my Bacardi and coke in my other hand.

Which of those is the "manly" drink?

:p

At least Bacardi is clear, and the Coke is brown. Clear or brown is considered a requirement for a "manly" alcohol/drink. ;)

My mother used to drink pink squirrels all the time.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

There's an old school supper club a bit north of Madison that has all of the ice cream drinks and we go there every once in a while and indulge. Can't find too many restaurants that make them anymore.

Brandy Alexanders are outstanding.

As far as Bacardi goes, I drink it. Just wouldn't cite it as manly. It's as soft a rum - other than Captain (which isn't really rum) - as there is.

I usually have to drink it in bars as they never have anything decent. Choices are usually rail, Bacardi lite, Captain and Meyers (which is probably the worst dark rum that I've had).

I hate Bacardi. I don't mind Captain in mixed drinks. Appleton Estate is pretty solid on the rocks.

Bacardi is good in fruit juice, as is the case with many light rums. With Coke, I want an amber or dark rum although Cruzan Light goes surprisingly well but it's a bit richer and more full bodied than a typical light.

Captain tastes like college - yuck! I have it on my bar, but only for a guest that may want it and I don't put it with the other rums. It's with the liqueurs.

Plantation Estate > Appleton, imho, of course.
