Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Bacardi is good in fruit juice, as is the case with many light rums. With Coke, I want an amber or dark rum although Cruzan Light goes surprisingly well but it's a bit richer and more full bodied than a typical light.

Captain tastes like college - yuck! I have it on my bar, but only for a guest that may want it and I don't put it with the other rums. It's with the liqueurs.

Plantation Estate > Appleton, imho, of course.

Haven't had Plantation, although I rarely drink rum anymore. I'll keep an eye out for it. :)

Unrelated: I get to crack my Deschutes Abyss tomorrow night, and am trading my spare bottle of Goose Island Bourbon County Coffee Stout for a bottle of the regular Bourbon County Stout. Kind of excited about both.

I guess I'm not that sophisiticated to have strong preferences of rums. But rarely is there one I don't like. Bacardi, Captain, and Appleton are all quite good. I've been meaning to get that Oakheart from Bacardi. Any thoughts on that one? The only bad one I've ever had was at a dive bar's rail. Not even sure what kind it was but it was definiately the bargain variety.

I was just yanking your chain a bit.

Bacardi is fine for a light rum, I just don't enjoy light rum all that much. Drank a bunch of it though in Rochester last week as they didn't have anything else (that I wanted) and got tired of paying $8 for Maker's & Coke.

Captain is worthy of derision though when called a "rum."

You? Yank my chain? Weird that's never happened before. :p :D

I think I'm just afraid to buy bottles of stuff and not like it. That way it gets stuck in my fridge for who knows how long. I just with my wife thought the same thing and will stop buying crap. I've got dragonfruit rum and cherry schnapps that are both horrible but I just can't bring myself to dump out liquor. I've got a one or two go-to drinks that I always keep in stock that are easy to make since I don't like thinking about it too much.
Step 1: pour in rum. Step 2: pour in coke. Step 3: mix and drink. Done.

Well, your first mistake is mixing Maker's. :p

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Can't do much (anything) without mixing.

I'm with you there. Unless you're doing shots but there's a specific reason for that and I definitely have a limit to how many I can handle.

There's hope for you as there was no "add a lime wedge" step. ;)

The only drink where I have ever actually ordered a lime is Corona. I think that's the only acceptable time to do so.

I can't imagine drinking a Corona without one. Tastes like summer!

Corona without a lime and warm temps is just a marginal beer.

Just went to the grocery store for a few items and Camarena Silver 1.75 had a $5 rebate.

Wife says, "Love how you go to the grocery store and always come home with booze."

Yep! ;)

Corona is always a marginal beer.

Fruit the drink, don't fruit the drink. Whatever, do it to taste. Just make sure the to judge anyone else who does it harshly.

Picked up the Schell's Framboise du Nord for a later date. I've heard good things about it.
