Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

My beverages from NYE:

Bell's Expedition Stout: Only had one since I want to hold onto the rest of the six-pack to see how it changes... Flavor was rather bold... You know immediately that it's 10.5%... Not very sweet, but I guess that develops with age... There hints of chocolate and some other sweet ingredients, but the beer was fairly bitter... Something that was different to me at least... Haven't had a stout with a flavor like this before... Really want to hold onto this for a few months and see where it goes...

Ellie's Brown Ale from Avery Brewing: It's a brown ale, so it has a good amount of sweetness to it... Not the heaviest brown ale out there, however... It's not something that would overpower snacks or a meal with it... A good intro to this style of beers or for someone that doesn't like their beer very thick/bold in the flavor department... There is a hint of hoppiness to this as well... Again, nothing overpowering, but enough to notice... I give it a solid B+... Not at the top of my list, but something I will get again...

Also, I had a new liquor store open up by me... Very good beer selection... Actually came across several options from Baltika while I was searching for my NYE selections... What were the selections that the Final Five folk were enjoying a few years ago? This was the first time I've seen it out by me...

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

For the Michigan beer-drinking crowd...

Tried a Saugatuck Neopolitan Stout over the holidays. I definitely got some strawberry and vanilla flavors out of it, and other people that tried it said they got a lot of chocolate flavor, so all three flavors are in there. I had one on nitro tap and it was almost like drinking beer ice cream. I don't know that I could drink more than one, but that one was really enjoyable.

Baltika #9 is the malt liquor. 51 oz. plastic bottle is required to do the Challenge. Consider yourself warned that the warmer it gets, the more you taste the rotten grape and cirrhotic liver overtones. I haven't had it in a few years now, just not worth the trouble anymore.

They make a Baltic Porter that is a lot more drinkable, #4 I think.

I see... I didn't realize it was a "Tastes like College" kind of thing... I had never seen it around here (which is kinda strange given how large of an Eastern European population that Chicago has)... Just remember a lot of talk about Baltika around these parts...

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Yeah, don't do the Baltika 9. I've heard the 3, 4, and 6 are decent, but I think I've only had the 3.

BTW, the 9 51oz plastic bottle runs about $3-4. There's your first hint. ;)

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I don't think they had that Baltika actually then... The ones they had were all regular 12oz bottles... One might have been a pint bottle...

The 9 might come in other sizes....but when you see that 51oz bottle....you gotta go for it. ;)

That sounds really good. Did a google search, and apparently it's also available in Chicago, but that's it outside of Michigan. I think a little road trip is in order.

I think I'd rather take the ferry across the lake to Western Michigan to pick some up than spend even a few minutes in Chicago.

just remembered my mom is going to Michigan this weekend. If she can spare a few minutes from the casino, I'll have her pick some up. woohoo! almost makes up for not having access to Maple Stout.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

So, really haven't been a fixture in bars for many years. The parents of my son's high school team like to patronize our home town sponsors (many of which are restaurants and bars) and when at tourneys, they like to hit the bars rather than drink at the hotel. This has been a lot of fun for the wife and I. Great group of people and plenty of them like to have a few beverages.

My gripe though is that I'm finding that my liquor collection at home is far superior to any of the places we've been going to - and these are mostly nice sports bars all the way up to nice restaurants. It's not like I'm walking into a towny bar and wanting some high falutin, fancy pants drink.

This is frustrating coz they all seem to have the same liquor distributor. Rums are always limited to Bacardi Light, Meyers (yuck!) and Captain (not really rum in my book and tastes like college anyway). Whiskeys and bourbons are the usual suspects too.

So I've basically been drinking Bacardi/cokes with no lime.

In a word, I'm... bored.

Just forgot how hard it can be to find any diversity in a bar's collection.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

And I'm kinda over beer at this point (too filling), so that's not really an option which is too bad coz they always have several choices that I'd like.

Just can't spend an evening drinking beer at this point. Like to have one with certain meals and that's about it these days.

Bars hold stock that they know will turnover, and that means most suburban bars are going to stock the reliable choices that will get repeat visitors.

Oddly enough, a few of the national fern bars will actually stock a few higher-end (not really high-end) choices than most other local bars.

Huh, I haven't noticed that. It seems like the places I end up going have a decent selection of "good stuff", usually whiskeys. I guess it is more rare to see high end rums, but I have seen them. There are few places that have limited selection that I've been to, but they are a) in the UP or b)the definition of a townie bar.

Actually, that's probably the correlation that I wasn't making. These cookie cutter sports bars and microbrew type restaurants are probably more likely to have the same ol' stuff.

Whereas a smaller, more independent thinking place might have a better selection.

Hmmm....

From my experience, bars that I would classify as "sports bars" generally have a poor selection, and if they do have a good selection, it is of beer before liquors. There are obviously some exceptions. I also notice that when I go "home" (hometown, where my parents still live, and out of the Twin Cities immediate area) it is much more likely that I won't find a good selection. If I go out in the cities, the selection is usally pretty good.

If you had it...you'd remember. :p

Also, not sure where around Chicago you live, but if you live near the south side check out Binny's on 95th in Evergreen Park. They had pretty good beer selection when I was there over the holidays...

I believe Binny's has the Chive (KCCO) black lager. bostonewe had it recently, and she liked it. I wish I could try it. :(

Can't remember if I saw it or not...the website doesn't say it does, but they haven't been open for very long. Used to be a bowling alley.
