Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

It is indeed seasonal, and it's been disappearing quickly, for the new seasonal stuff.

That being said, really tempted to buy out my local store's last remaining Founders Breakfast Stout, as it appears to be the only store that has any left (they have about a case and a half, and they KNOW they are one of the last, if not last, store to have it: manager said he bought it ALL when it came out this year).

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Any MN people know where I can get the Third Street Maple Stout in the Blaine/Coon Rapids area? The beer finder thing on their page isn't working for me.

Up North at 610 and Noble in BP had some as of last week.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Just cracked open a Rye of the Tiger IPA from Great Lakes. I am a fan of most of their stuff (although they are no Founders) and I have to say, this might be top 2-3 from them. Not for the faint of heart (more for the hop heads) but the very subtle rye tones really add to this.

It is a nice medium between an extra hoppy IPA and a behemoth IIPA. Since I consider Hopalicious a session beer, ;) this is a nice change of pace for something a little more intense.

I will have to look for that. I agree with you, save for one caveat - the Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, IMO, is on par with most of Founders brews. :)

I did not mean to imply that some of their beer is not on par with Founders (I completely agree with the EFP, probably number 2 on my list from Great Lakes)...I meant it as I enjoy Founder's lineup as a whole more than Great Lakes. I do not think I have had a Founders that I have not liked.

Either way, two great breweries!

I need to try to like whiskey. Any recommendations from the whiskey fans for a newbie whiskey drinker to try? I didn't like beer until I got introduced to one that didn't actually taste much like beer (Coors on a ski trip to CO way back when) and eventually grew to like real beers and disdain light American lagers. Maybe the same will happen with whiskey if I work at it.

Start off with some strong 7 & 7's, maybe. Ease into the taste. For on the rocks, maybe start with the Irish/Canadian whiskeys, as they are lighter in taste/body. Then gradually move into the bourbons.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I started with Beam Rye sours, then advanced to Wild Turkey or Jack & Coke. One day, I decided I didn't need the mixer anymore, and shortly thereafter, graduated from Jack to the good stuff. Whole process took about a year, but I was more of a beer guy in my undergrad years.

I never got much of a whiskey taste out of 7&7s. I agree with Brent, I'd start with a decent Irish whiskey - Powers or Black Bush - and one cube of ice. Irish whiskey is light, sweet, and the easiest of the four major styles to learn to enjoy. Bourbon is tough because, IMO, 90% of the cheaper bourbons are unpleasant without a mixer, and a lot of the good mid-priced ($25-40) ones are too strong for a beginner. Buffalo Trace or Maker's with a cube of ice are worth a shot. Scotch, I personally wouldn't even bother until you've decided whether you really like whiskey or not, though there is a decent blend called White Horse that goes for about $20. It offers surprisingly good flavor for a blended scotch (Lagavulin, Caol Ila, and Talisker single malts are part of the mix), and is light on the wallet compared to single malts, and even some better-known blends.

You don't mix your 7&7s right. ;) I love mine "burned" (strong).

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

whenever I get a cold I always think that there must be some way that alcohol can purify the virus out... I never try that... but it'd be nice to burn it out in one go.

Nah. I've had 7 Crown on the rocks without 7 Up or Sprite, and I was still underwhelmed - it's Jim Beam without the nasty yeast flavor. It's a drink for college students and cheap drunks.

Took your advice on the Templeton Rye though. I like it - definitely the smoothest rye I've had. IMO, not quite as flavorful as Sazerac or Bulleit Rye though.

Tried all the suggestions for the maple stout - unfortunately none left anywhere. Princeton Liquors had a very impressive selection.

There was one still left two days ago at Up North - I actually didn't buy it to give you a chance.

For those in the Milwaukee area, "Chad" a barley wine from Lakefront is everything an American style barley wine should be. Pick one up if you get a chance.

doh! thanks for the thought. somebody got it before me (I was there on Saturday afternoon). :) they were the only place that still had a spot on the shelf for it, but I asked, and they were out and not getting anymore.

goldy: had a tournament in Blaine

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Just visited Mad Fox Brewery (Brew pub) in Falls Church... I didn't have a bad beer in the lot and there were some beers that were off menu... Including an awesome bourbon barreled scotch ale. Quite drunk right now... but it was worth it.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Schell's Maifest. I wait all year for this beer. Also saw that Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout is appearing on shelves here. WIN.
