Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

In hindsight, I found it overrated for the price. Woodford Double Barrell is as good or better for $20 less. Maker's 46 is better still, as far as price per ounce.

With the few small tastes I've had, I tend to agree. I don't think I'd buy it again because of the bevy of better choices for cheaper. Nice bottle and nice overall presentation, but I'd rather get a bottle of the regular WR or the WRDO. The WR Double Oaked is by far my favorite whiskey.

Didn't realize the Maple Stout from Third Street was seasonal. Hopefully I can pick some up before it's gone. I know it's in their sampler pack, but would like to get more than three of them.

Load up for my bachelor party tomorrow we purchased KBC Widowmaker, spotted cow, two kinds of buffalo sweat, some other fancy beers and a 30 pack of coors light cans for beer darts. Hopefully it doesn't rain!

It's only 12.0 APV:

I've already had that and it's glorious, but I didnt think it made this one laughable.

Chalk up another win for MN. We have that here. :)

Bought a bomber each of New Belgium's Cascara (ale brewed with date and coffee cherries) and Transatlantique Kriek (45% ale with cherries and 55% ale). Heard great things about the latter, very curious about the former. Probably will have them tonight, and definitely will give my thoughts on them.

Hops:Stone Brewery = dates:Cascara. I couldn't finish it. Had to pour half of it out. Yep, that strong, and not something I care for one bit. Unless you want your mouth to be raped by date flavor, don't bother with this one.

The Kriek on the other hand.....*drool*

On a whim, bought a bomber of "The Dogfather" by Laughing Dog Brewery in Idaho - bourbon barrel-aged RIS. Not as good as Founders KBS, but a close substitute if available.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Just got back from a whiskey tasting/class. It was awesome.

Griff's Cowboy Whiskey: probably the blandest of the bunch. A little sweet, a lot light.
Cedar Ridge Iowa Bourbon: one of the bottles I bought. Straight to the point, but quality. I liken it to "comfort whiskey" like meat loaf is to "comfort food."
Jefferson's Reserve Bourbon: have had this before, it's ok. For the price, there are better out there, though.
Jefferson's Reserve Rye: I've only had 3 rye whiskeys (Templeton and Bulleit) before, and Templeton is still the best of the bunch. JRR is 2nd, though.

Clontarf Irish Whiskey: Yep. It's Irish Whiskey alright. No way I could differentiate between this or Jameson on a blind test.
Knappogue Castle 12: Fuller flavor, yet just as smooth as the Clontarf. My dad ended up buying this one. He really, really, liked it.
Knappogue Castle 17: This is a double-wood, 15 in oak, and 2 in sherry. Way too sweet for my tastes. If you've had the Balvenie 12 (also a double wood, 6 and 6), that's about right for me in terms of sweetness.

Amrut Fusion Indian Single Malt: Yes, it's from India. And man, it's darn good. I had no clue what to expect going in. This is the other bottle I bought. Tastes like an Islay, to be honest. I guess due to the climate, it basically hyper-ages (which I find to be really interesting).
Deanston Virgin Oak: It's a Highland, tastes like a Highland. Good, and if I were to go with an inexpensive Highland, this would probably be on that short list.
Bunnahabhain Toiteach: I have had this before, didn't disappoint then, doesn't disappoint now.

Prichard's Sweet Lucy Bourbon Cream: I know what you're thinking. It's probably wrong, too. Think a bourbon-infuse Bailey's sort of drink. It was quite good, and was the 2nd biggest good surprise of the night (the Amrut being the biggest surprise).

Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel! Equinoxe du Printemps
(Scotch Ale Brewed with Maple Syrup)

I have no idea what this stuff was, but I saw "Scotch Ale Brewed with Maple Syrup" and was intrigued. It was a single 12 oz bottle with all of the other rare or high-end beers. Bought it, and it was excellent.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Any MN people know where I can get the Third Street Maple Stout in the Blaine/Coon Rapids area? The beer finder thing on their page isn't working for me.

It is getting really tough to find, since it is seasonal. I haven't seen it lately. I usually go to North gate in Blaine and they're had it previously but I haven't checked lately.

Northgate might have it. In my experience, their staff hasn't been that knowledgeable when it comes to new stuff, and they tend to gouge a bit on some stuff like that. If you don't find it there, it's probably worth making the 10/15 minute trip to Princeton Liquors in Maple Grove. They usually have just about everything.
