Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Elmer T. Lee bourbon is still very good. Maybe the best bang for the buck in the bourbon world, as my opinion of the regular Maker's Mark has cooled somewhat, and it's cheaper than Maker's 46.

btw, since my wife informed me today she's having people over to the house tomorrow that I don't even care for (during the playoffs no less, the only time of the season I actually want to sit down and watch full NFL games live) I treated myself today. I picked up Buffalo Trace, Surly Furious, Surly Smoke (1st time for me), SA Winter sampler, Snowstorm, Stone Ruination and for the dooshes coming tomorrow Coors Light. :D

Elijah Craig 18 or Woodford Reserve

Makers Mark is mediocre at best now. Maybe it used to be better but I don't think I'd buy it again.

I'm a huge fan of Black Maple Hill Small Batch Bourbon. And at 30 bucks or so for a 750ml, it tastes way more expensive than that. Makes a mean Manhattan too.

I've never actually had a Manhattan. I just can't bring myself to use one of my good bourbons in them but don't really want to buy a really cheap bourbon to use in mixed drinks.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I generally don't dump a bourbon that costs more than $30 a bottle into a mixed drink (or any other liquor for that matter). That is what MM, Buffalo Trace, or JB Black is for; or Evan Williams if you're really cheap/on a budget.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Dewars is ok for a Manhattan. Trace might be cheaper than many others but I would never add anything with it.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Tried absinthe for the first and last time yesterday night (it was the real kind, flavored with grande wormwood). Thought I'd like it because I'm one of the few people not from Wisconsin who likes plain shots of Jager, but after three glasses I couldn't get used to the flavor - reminded me too much of medicine. Oh, and the whole psychedelic thing is definitely a crock - I was just normally buzzed. However it was 62% ABV, so I think that explains why all the Frenchies drank it. ;)

Absinthe is disgusting.

And mentioned in the Tech thread, Four Roses is a solid recommendation. Thank you.

bbdl brought over a sixer of Shiner Blonde. Don't bother. He didn't really like it, left some of it for me, I tried it, and I concur. It is now a house beer. And we LIKE Shiner Bock and the holiday brew.

Also, I brought a bottle of Baltika No. 4. Dark lager, nothing special, tastes of adjuncts (unlike Baltika No. 9, which tastes of rocket fuel and regret.) bbdl said it smelled like sticking your nose in a wheat silo.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Am slowly working my way through the Sam Adams Winter Variety pack. Loved the Black and Brew and the 2 holiday beers were pretty good. Chocolate Bock was okay, but I had it with dinner and it's more dessert-y. Sam Boston doesn't do it for me anymore, which is annoying as it's one of the only lighter beers I'll drink.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I tried Lagavulin 16 tonight. Very smoky and this was the first real smoky Scotch I've had. I liked it quite a bit.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I can't count how many times I've heard "you should try ______________ " in the last 3 days.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

That's what happens when you travel. Take advantage.
I'm trying to remember them all for after work is done, but its tough. I have a couple on my list to try.

Edit: I may be touring the Auchentoshan Distillery and trying some of that today or tomorrow. Also considering touring the Glengoyne Distillery tomorrow.
