It's basic statistics. In raw numbers, because one group is much larger, even though welfare is much less common, they have a similar total number. You're correct, but it's also correct to say that if you randomly select a black or hispanic person, they are statistically more likely to be on welfare. This is stats 101.

That was never the issue. The issue was, when you think of "Welfare Recipient," what do you think of? If there's a racial component to your image, you lose, unless your racial component is "not Asian."

(Though I predict if USCHO still exists in 2030, we will be going through this same thing with Asians, with the Hispanics vociferously telling all those dirt poor Indonesians* and Vietnamese to get back on their **** rafts and go home.)

If one given group receives welfare at a much higher rate than another group or other groups, that is going to factor into who you think of as welfare recipients. Both raw total and percentage are legitimate ways of assessing who gets welfare.

In raw numbers, true according to that link, but by percentage it's very different. Our resident Rover seems to be referring to percentages, though of course with him it's always a bit fuzzy.

Networks and local TV stations for years have had an unwritten rule: never show any minority folks in any story about welfare or welfare reform. And if you wind up with some minority folks in the bacground, be sure to inverview only fat white chicks with an overbite in the foreground.

I'm not trying to make a specific point on the overall subject, just to point out the statistical silliness that can and often does go on when this type of subject comes up.

I long for the good old days when the National Welfare Rights organization got a coveted spot on the podium of several Democratic national conventions.
