Re: Obama XIV: President VISTA with SP2

Ship's been on the ocean floor since 2005. We're trying to raise it and the guys who scuttled it sit around whining it's wet.
They were tossed off the lifeboats when the ship went down. Unfortunately, the survivors may have not learned their lesson.

Too bad the sharks are somewhere else (Cape Cod??).

Re: Obama XIV: President VISTA with SP2

As the ship sinks into the cold, dark Atlantic, we've got two parties arguing over which side of the ship to launch the lifeboats.

typed this a day or two ago but it seems to be appropriate now

Poor old Titanic, such a useful symbol. . .for everybody. The Nazis even had a propaganda film about the "Night to Remember." IIRC their point was the accident wouldn't have happened to Aryans, or something.

Read something on point the other day in The Economist. It was about how Belfast is turning the shipyard where the Titanic was build into some high end development. When asked if the place was cursed due to its association with the doomed ship, apparently Belfast residents are taken to respond, "she was fine when she left here". :D

The iceberg was white.

The Titanic might be the tiredest metaphor of all time. Other choices: Munich Conference, Pearl Harbor, Waterloo.

Mandatory hockey content: in the 1953 version of Titanic, the passengers in the bar are singing "Far Above Cayuga's Waters" when the ship hits the iceberg.

Blago guilty of one count of lying to Federal investigators....

That's ALL they could find him guilty of? Slap his wrist, fine him $10K and get on with life.

Indeed she was. In hindsight, the accident seems so avoidable. How could it have happened? Why didn't they have enough life boats? Why didn't the Californian do something about seeing 8 white rockets? Why did the Titanic ignore repeated ice warnings? Why didn't the Titanic double the watch or slow down? The answer to these and all the other questions is: Because the Titanic hadn't happend yet.

The Titanic was one of three sisters ships built by Harland and Wolff for the White Star Line and only the Olympic had a long career. The Titanic hit the ice, of course, but the third ship, the Britannic was torpedoed and lost during WWI.

Sorta restores your faith in the system, doesn't it? Well at least that crook wasn't able to peddle the Obama seat to the highest bidder. Instead, the Dems have nominated a seriously mobbed up thug banker to sit in the United States Senate. Pardon me, I'm verklempt.

I could have sworn it hit a mine... I could be confusing my ships though...

No, no. It's me whose got his wires crossed. She hit a mine all right, and speculation is, that caused a coal dust explosion that effectively blew her bow off. She went down like a rock. I'll do better next time. :)

The call from business for less government has a notable exception: the mortgage market.

The Obama administration invited banking executives Tuesday to offer advice on changing the government's role in backing the mortgage market. While they disagreed on the exact level of support needed, the group overwhelmingly advocated for the government to maintain a large role in the $11 trillion market.

Re: Obama XIV: President VISTA with SP2

Today

While the banking industry has joined Republicans in criticizing the administration for instituting stronger regulations of Wall Street, they support the government playing a large role in the mortgage market.

"There would be a lot of homeowners who wouldn't be able to afford homes because we'd be dealing with higher interest rates." said S.A. Ibrahim, chief executive of mortgage insurer Radian Group Inc.

Commercial banks also gripe about the GSEs while milking them for benefits. They complain that Fannie Mae's implicit government backing gives it an unjust financing advantage and thus steals market share from their own home-lending business. But commercial banks routinely pack their own portfolios with mortgage-backed securities as a way of goosing their returns without having to go to the trouble of making loans. According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., commercial banks hold about $1.1 trillion in GSE-related debt, equal to 12 percent of their total assets. And the private banks take full advantage of that implicit public guarantee. FDIC-insured banks face limits on the amount of higher-yielding corporate debt they can hold, but they can own as much government debt as they like. For regulatory purposes, the Fannie and Freddie debt is counted as government debt.
