Re: Obama V: For Vendetta

"Paving the road"? What do you call welfare, social security, unemployment, subsidized student loans and grants, medicare, ag subsidies, etc.? To say nothing of the incentives the feds provide private industry, such as lending incentives, R&D grants, etc. "Socialism" of whatever stripe has been alive and well in this country for a century or more.

Which is unfortunate. That doesn't mean we should sit here and take it when it kicks into high gear.

And everyone has benefitted at some level, or will, even those rugged individualists trudging through the streets of DC last weekend in their Tricorn hats and Southern Crosses ...

You show me one "southern cross" from last weekend and I'll be impressed. The only one I saw was on a Mississippi state flag that someone was flying - but then again, I saw state flags from practically every state in the nation (including a Hawaiian flag, which impressed me).

A conservative, standing up for socialism. Woohoo, you sure are special, Scott.

Those don't count.

Re: Obama V: For Vendetta

Iraq has never been about national defense and I'd argue it's made it worse, (i.e.) created more terrorists and diverted funds from Afghanistan. At least Hussein was contained.

I've always believed Iraq was in part execution of the "mad bomber" theory. If you have a giant military industrial complex, and a desire to play cop for the world, sometimes you gotta send out the message that you have a mad bomber with his finger on the trigger, if for no other reason than to signal to other twits like Hussein the message, "jeez, what will that clown do next."

Take a look at the Flickr link I posted yesterday. I'd do it myself, but my work computers have more limited access to photo and networking sites.

What really impresses me is your ability to identify state flags. Remedial education has really paid off for you.

I figured this would be the response.

Gosh, you're so witty. Now that you've lowered yourself to Kepler and Rover's level (for which I'm sure they'll heartily congratulate you), perhaps you should join them on my list for very special people. Adieu.

So I was trolling through the media section of Target during my errand run, and happened across the book section. They have a fully illustrated children's book titled "Barack" that depicts Mr. President looking off into the distance with his chin held high. Has he been deified yet?

Get 'em while they're young.

The list of your intellectual betters? I'm fairly certain it's as long as "War and Peace".

Re: Obama V: For Vendetta

Can't agree with you there. The town hallers (other than maybe the small fringe element) aren't asking the government to get totally out of their lives, even in terms of health care. But they are at the point where they see the government becoming much too involved, and they've had enough.

Where were they when an American president dropped everything on his vacation to go back to Washington and sign a bill getting government involved in the private medical decisions of a woman and her spouse?
If the health care bill were to be implemented the way Obama and most of the Dems want to see things, we would have the government totally taking over health care/insurance.
Despite the fact that none of the plans being developed in the various committees does any such thing. Paranoia will destroy 'ya.
That's what the town hallers don't want to see. The leaders on the left are paving the road to Socialism. Between both parties, it's no wonder the country is going down the tubes.

The road to "Socialism" has been in the process of being paved for more than seventy years. When you're ready to give up your nice military pension and healthcare, your SS and Medicare, then we'll talk.

These people aren't angry about any of that. What they're angry about is that we've got a darkie running the country, and they can't just be good ol' boys any longer. I've got news for you, we have these things called 'elections' in this country, and you guys lost. Throwing temper tantrums because of it doesn't make your position any more palatable. In this country, the mob doesn't rule. Get over it.

Didn't we already send that message with Afghanistan? Never mind the world gave us a virtual blank check (diplomatically, emotionally and somewhat militarily) following 9/11 that imho going into Iraq pizzed away.

Neither are true democracies, especially Iran. Iran is actually a good example of what happens when we DON'T do something about brutal dictators (or even worse, support them). Bing!

I don't mean right now, I mean the result of when the US and Britain assisted the overthrow of the democratically established Moussadeq government and it's been a hornet's nest ever since. But you're right that they are not a true democracy at present.

Pakistan? Aye, yay, yay.

I think one can articulate an argument that Bush and co. felt Iraq was about national security (even I bought into it at one point) even if in the end the reality of the situation there doesn't seem to bare that out.

Should we go further down that road? Isn't that the question

Turkey's secular, European, and not Arab.

While the govt is secular, it's largely a Muslim country that borders many of the countries in which our interests lie throughout the Middle East. It may be partly European, but it's mostly Asian. The Black Sea separates the two continents right through Istanbul.

I agree that the road to Socialism was started long ago. FDR brought us Social Security and LBJ brought us Medicare. And SS and Medicare, thanks to fiscal mismanagement by the government, are responsible for the hugest portion of our Fed debt load. I can't say as I agree that most Fed incentives to private industry represent Socialism; they could, depending upon who is benefiting and how, but a lot of such incentives result from gaming our over-convoluted and complex tax system to appease special interests and big donors. But the current move by Obama and the Dems to try and have the government totally take over the health care/insurance industry represents a big jump in the movement towards Socialism, if it is successful.
