Obama 6(...66)

Re: Obama 6(...66)

It depends...there is no absolute right or wrong it sort of goes on a case by case basis depending on what is going on in the US as much as anywhere else. Right now I am more towards isolationism because the country is in pretty rough shape and we should be focusing more on how to fix that as opposed to fixing everyone else. When things are more stable then I think we should be helping out where we can.

I also realize that what I want may not be the right answer either.

That's what I figured. I tend to be a bit of an isolationist myself, and I agree it's hard to know when we should jump into certain situations or not. Part of it is that it's just getting harder and harder to positively impact situations overseas for a variety of reasons.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

And the grafters are licking their chops at that one.

Are you suggesting that a Chicago public works project might involve chicanery? ;)

That's really the biggest reason why Obama should treat the 2016 bid like plutonium. There are obviously going to be huge corruption problems -- there would be if Mother Theresa returned from heaven to run it -- and he should avoid getting caught in that swirl around the bowl.

Stick Mittens with it again. He has to be useful for something.

I want the games in Chicago. And I'm guessing BO is getting behind the pitch at the behest of Mayor Daley. Either Daley thinks they'll lose to Rio if he doesn't show up or there's a wink/nudge assurance that if the president puts in an appearance the deal is done. I'm inclined to the former view.

However, either way BO wouldn't be the first American president to come running when a Chicago mayor named Daley snapped his fingers. In the movie 13 days, JFK wants to cancel an appearance in Chicago and Kenny O'Donnel is reluctant to make the call. JFK says "are you afraid of Daley?" O'Donnel says "you're darn right I am." Kennedy says "I'm not," and heads off to make the call. O'Donnel turns to Bobby Kennedy and says "watch this," and the next scene shows JFK in Chicago kissing Daley's ring. lol

Assuming Chicago gets the bid, BO's public involvement would be over 'til he presides at the opening ceremonies. And let's face it, you'd have to be less than human not to want to deliver that short speech in your own home town.
Dick Durbin and whoever replaces that revolting crook Roland Burris and the Chicago congressional delegation will see to it that funds are made available to Chicago. BO's fingerprints won't have to be on it, although Valerie Jarrett will be providing presidential "guidance."

None of the corruption will matter to the national audience when they bring in the flag and light the flame. It'll matter to Chicagoans, of course, at least some of them, but by then it'll be too late.

By then it won't matter for Obama, he'll be winding down the final summer of his second term and blessing the Dem nominee at the convention (assuming the crazies don't stage their 7 Days in May drag act). The problem is the years until then, with the Mellon-Scaife types trying to hang Obama with every mis-spent dime. Complete lack of relevance never stopped a character assassination. Why give the thugs free lead?

Well, from my vantage point here on the grassy knoll I don't see that happening. Although that sclerotic old queen Gore Vidal evidently agrees with Mr. Perry. So there you have it.;)

Think Big Dig x 10.

One of the signal moments in the regime of Daley I occured at a regularly scheduled news conference when someone pointed out it might be a conflict of interest that the City of Chicago had placed a multi-million dollar insurance policy with an agency that employed Billy Daley--he, in fact, got the huge commission. Daley's response. . ."when a father can't help his son, you can just kiss my azz." What a beauty.

For the next 20 years Mike Royko referred to the "mistletoe on my coattail remark."

Re: Obama 6(...66)

That's funny. He has his own tactics thrown right up in his face. Good for whoever had the idea for that site.

Maybe we should come up with a site using your name, a la, "www.***********rapedandmurderedayounggirlin1990.com" and see how you like it. Would it still be funny? Would that be considered "getting even" because you can certainly be obtuse and a crap-stirrer up here? Would you give kudo's to the poster that started it?

Probably wouldn't be so bad - we'll use the same disclaimer and all....

“Notice: This site is parody/satire. We assume **** ******** did not rape and murder a young girl in 1990, although we haven’t yet seen proof that he didn’t. But we think **** ******* definitely uses tactics like this to spread lies and misinformation.”

Re: Obama 6(...66)

"THERE IS CORRUPTION GOING ON HERE?!?! well i'm shocked!!" ;)

Some wag suggested that the design for the Illinois commemorative quarter should be a pair of hands exchanging an envelope stuffed with money beneath a table. Governor Blago probably deep sixed the idea, lol.

While I don't agree with this type of 'counter-measure' because I think it's tasteless, maybe Beck should have seen something like this coming. That is unless he actually thinks he speaks truth.

I doubt scooby has ever interviewed a US congressman and because he is muslim said: (paraphrasing) I'm scared and a lot of americans are scared so why don't you prove to us that you aren't a terrorist.
And many other such interviews where he just accuses people of random things and then tells them to prove that they didn't do it. That is the point of that site, not that Glenn Beck actually raped and murdered a young girl in 1990.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

It does achieve its aim because all criticisms of it immediately boomerang to criticisms of Beck as what it parodies are his tactics. Classic confusion of call-by-reference vs call-by-value.

It is extremely unlikely, however, that Glenn Beck actually raped and murdered a young girl in 1990 if for no other reason than I picture him as more interested in young boys.

the nation is reaching new lows in its political discourse.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Glenn Beck is awesome. He's completely bat **** insane and he's made a career out of it. He's the Manny Ramirez of political commentators.

Anyone who take Glenn Beck's commentary seriously is crazy. He's always about five seconds from having a complete meltdown on the air. This is further proof that Fox News is a depraved joke, but at least it will be an entertaining one now.

Now here's some polling I like. :D

Bottom line is, character assassination is all well and good if it works. Judging by these #'s, the GOP is still about as popular as the IRS. :D

dtp, boo hoo hoo. Why are conservatives such wimps when somebody used their own tactics against them? Beck knows the drill. He wants to be bombthrower for ratings sake that's fine, but don't start crying (literally in his case) if somebody turns it around on you.

RE: Chicago. As I've said before, a little graft helps grease the wheels of government. Chicago is actually a place you'd like to visit, or even work in. There's not a lot of destination cities out there, so they must be doing something right.

But at least you're watching them instead of the boring drivel on CNN or MSNBC.

Spot on! If the roads are clean, the snow is shoveled, and the trash is picked up, and junior finds a job in the city government, then most politicos can be take it to the bank that they will be in office for a long, long time.

When they get tired of the city alderman's job, there is always a seat in the State legislature or Congress that they can be promoted to.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Chicago's awesome; it's essentially a Midwestern New York, which means the people are friendlier, the food is better, and its cheaper to visit.

I'd love to see the Olympics in Chicago. I think it's probably Rio's to lose since South America has never hosted the Olympics, but Brazil hosting the 2014 World Cup could be the wild card (pro because they'll have new stadiums already built, con because no one knows how that'll go crime wise).

Madrid's out because they're in London in 2012 and Russia's got the 2014 winter games. They won't go to Europe three times in a row. Tokyo's probably done, too, since they were just in the Far East last year. That leave Chi-town and Rio.
