Re: Obama 6(...66)

I think this was a big victory for GOP chairman Michael Steele and Republicans everywhere who were clearly cheering for Rio to win over Chicago, because hey, the enemy of their enemy is their friend I guess, even if its detrimental to the United States.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

But at least you're watching them instead of the boring drivel on CNN or MSNBC.

I can't stand CNN, MSNBC or Fox News. They all suck.

Rachel Maddows and the Glenn Beck are the only entertaining people on any of those three stations.

(I also don't like ESPN or MTV, but that's a different thread)

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Diamond-in-the-rough kind of city. Too many people's image of Chicago is Cabrini-Green, like their image of Philly is South Philly. There are gorgeous, virtually unknown parts of each. Very street-wise, bustling, on-the-make, energetic places. I meant it as a compliment.

Northeast - Midwest Conversion table

Philadelphia - Chicago
Minneapolis-St. Paul - Boston
Indianapolis - Baltimore
Brooklyn - Detroit
Queens - East St. Louis

Fair enough. Besides, after reading these comments from the NY Times, I remember once again why I hate New Yorkers.

Magda Morris, 31, a stay-at-home mother who lives in Midtown, said, “I really don’t care. It would be better if it was New York.” She added, “I’ve never been to Chicago; all I know is that it’s pretty cold, colder than New York.”

And Lindsey Signorelli, 24, a student from New Jersey, said, “Not that I’m anti-American, but I was kind of hoping Brazil would win.” She added, “I’ve never been to Chicago to judge, but it doesn’t seem to be a place to hold the Olympics.”

Really? In NY ***** City, you couldn't find two people who've actually been to Chicago?

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Queens - East St. Louis

Poor Queens.

Having been to both, I'd have to put Baltimore above Indy. And the fact that my ex lives there has nothing to do with that assessment, no not a bit...

Magda Morris is aware that the Summer Olympics happen during the Summer, right? And that summer in Chicago (and the rest of the US) isn't exactly an arctic deep freeze, right?

Right?

Re: Obama 6(...66)

It's Rio's to lose. I just can't see them giving it to Europe that many times in a row.

I don't know. Samarach, now 89 and the former head of the IOC, apparently gave an impassioned plea for Spain, and that kind of stuff could carry a lot of weight.

I think the U.S. was also hurt by recent squabbles with the IOC over various things. I read that there isn't even a U.S. member now on the board of directors, and the U.S. really doesn't have much pull in Olympic circles anymore.

This is very true. The IOC Governing Board is mostly made up of Europeans.

I doubt the U.S. will see another Olympics for quite awhile. There will always be other viable candidates, and it doesn't take that many IOC members with grudges against the U.S. to keep the Olympics out of this country for a long time.

Really, the IOC is sort of like a sports United Nations.

Hmm. In that case, what % of the money they make out with comes from American television, because interest in this country tends to be sporadic as is.

That's been true forever, though, and the US has still been well- (over-?) represented in hosting.

The IOC is probably like the NCAA -- they are concerned, in some order of importance, with: money, money and money. The US is still the best dumping ground for all the crap that the Olympics merchandises, up to and including the TV rights. I doubt they want to marginalize that market, and the only way to keep Americans interested in anything is to bring it to them.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

They may have influence, but the IOC as a whole is who votes.

I've read that over 40 percent of IOC members are European, so if that's true, then you better be on the good side of the Euros if you ever want an Olympics. Not sure how the Euros would get that many votes, but these international bodies are always rather Byzantine.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Maybe they needed MJ to go into Hall of Fame speech mode and talk about how he liked kicking the hell out of the countries on the IOC.

In the old days Chicago would have had a much better chance because they know how to play the game, but the IOC is now being watched much closer.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

It's Rio.

So do they hold it in the North American Summer or the South American summer??

The Olympics during Carnivale, just what the world needs!
