Re: Obama 6(...66)

The Dream Team killed my interest in the summer games. I root for underdogs, so it was great to root for the US when the Soviets and their bloc were cheating. Then we started cheating too -- screw it.

Let's bring back the good old days where the refs give the Russians three tries to get the final few seconds right. :D I don't much care for NBA players in the Olympics either, but why use a loaded word like "cheating" when you know we're not?

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Sure, now we don't have to pay for it... which morally righteous cause shall we go into debt for this time?

So, you don't think the US hosting the Olympic Games is a good thing?

Jobs for people in construction, hospitality, travel, how many other industries?

Oh, and here's a little clip of the conservative Americans For Prosperity conference in Virginia when they received the news.

Why do conservatives hate America?

So let's see, so far this year, conservatives have been against:

Bill Clinton traveling to N. Korea to secure the release of American journalists.

An American city hosting the Olympic Games

Rescuing American sailors from Somali pirates

Helping American automobile companies stay in business

And offering Americans affordable healthcare

Again, why do conservatives hate America? Why do they feel that America isn't able to do any of these things, why do they doubt the greatness of this country?

Oh, yeah, cause we have a black Democrat as President.

Imagine the outcry from Repubs isf it was the so-called 'hard left' openly cheering because the US didn't win an Olympic bid? Did you see any liberals cheering when NYC lost the 2012 games?

Lastly, who said this, back in 2008?
. "They say that the Olympics will come to Chicago if we're fortunate enough to be selected, but really it's coming to America, and I can't think of a better city to represent the United States than Chicago,"

"This country supports your bid, strongly."

You people make me sick.

Cheating = using pros.

Your mind-reading act is getting old. Stop telling people what they think, know, are doing, etc.

If we end up going in debt for those with no long term improvements then YES going into debt is a bad thing... or do you think if we fill the hole big enough it'll magically fill itself back in?

Why do conservatives hate America?

Why should we be proud of supporting a corrupt backwater and a president so willing to not only defend it but enhance it.

Bill Clinton traveling to N. Korea to secure the release of American journalists.

We shouldn't have to negotiate with terrorist states like N Korea... especially when its likely we'd have to give up concessions.

An American city hosting the Olympic Games

Nobody is against that... we're against the rampant corruption that a Chicago bid would bring... it'd be like an extra Christmas ever year for the next 6 for them.

Rescuing American sailors from Somali pirates

I don't remember anybody being against that.

Helping American automobile companies stay in business

We're going further in the hole for a structural failing organization that will only lose more money. So, we're working on something for which we'll see no return and worse we'll have to pay for in terms of losing economic parity to other nations via inflation or reduced money supply... its all a matter of how we pay off that debt.

And offering Americans affordable healthcare

Because the math dictates that you'll have to reduce services to those who currently do have it. Math has a funny way of getting in front of the idealist fanatasy machine.

Again, why do conservatives hate America? Why do they feel that America isn't able to do any of these things, why do they doubt the greatness of this country?

I doubt anybody that promotes that we can do all things and everything. America can do a lot of things that others cannot due to its spirit of working hard, trying to out do others, and trying to help each other along. IT DOES NOT FOLLOW THAT WE CAN CREATE MIRACLES. Every action is still subject to the ways that men operate in society. We CAN do certain things but they'd likely not meet the measure of the things that we'd want. Hence why status quo is better than your change... because we can have universal health care... but do we want that? No. Because it wouldn't provide better care which is the resounding desire of the American people.

Why do Democrats believe in the infinite capacity of their ideals to provide all things and great things?

Some of you on the left think that we can produce innovations beyond our dreams if we give enough of our resources... laws of physics be ****ed.

Oh, yeah, cause we have a black Democrat as President.

Good for you... seriously... you must obviously see the truth... its because of the color of his skin... not due to his insane policies... if he were white, like Jimmy Carter, we'd be all OK with this. How's Jimmy doing? I see he's still the worst president of the modern era.

Imagine the outcry from Repubs isf it was the so-called 'hard left' openly cheering because the US didn't win an Olympic bid? Did you see any liberals cheering when NYC lost the 2012 games?

Did you see any conservatives either? Do you think Repubs would care about most other cities... is it only about left/right to you? Why should we award corruption? Because its Barry's home base???

Lastly, who said this, back in 2008?

You people make me sick.

Don't care.

A

And what color am I Mr. Pot? In your reactionary anti-Americanism and desire to impress everyone with it, you glide right over the fact that THE RULES HAVE CHANGED. It is not "cheating" to send a basketball or hockey team made of pros if the rules permit it. But in your world, evidently, one never passes up a chance to criticize America, even if the criticism is based either on a lie or deliberate ignorance. Insofar as you're concerned, it isn't mind reading, it's post reading.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

I think he was talking about the Soviets cheating, as in they were using pros in 72 and we weren't. Read his post again

He said "cheating=using pros." And in his previous post indictated the US was "cheating." I'm only going by the plain language he used. He said he used to root for the United States (with some effort I can make myself believe that) "until we started cheating, too."

No, I don't think I've misunderstood him. Sadly, I understand him perfectly.

Well, take an aspirin and call me in the morning. I was going to say I too was offended by the cheering (which I take as anti-Obama more than anything else). And offer some of my justifiably famous rejoinders to your rant, but then you punched up your argument with the left's default position: opposition to this dude is racial. It isn't, but alleging it to be true IS a substitute for thinking.

In your reactionary anti-Americanism and desire to impress everyone with it...

Perhaps this isn't my place, but from my observations I don't find Kep to be anti-American - in fact I'd argue exactly the opposite and that he loves this country quite a bit. I'd also bet however that he doesn't feel a need to shout it out, pound his chest nor sort a Stars & Stripes bumper sticker on his car. I'd go further and wager he finds such bravado to be cheap and perhaps even shallow.

That he has a different set of ideals regarding what it takes to continue taking this country forward than you do is not anti-American it's simply a different brand. If he were anti-American I don't think he'd live where he does nor be married to someone that does what his wife does. I suppose someone could argue those points do not matter so it is mho of course.

In the context of this most recent exchange, pardon me, that's bollocks.
Naturally anyone who takes offense at the snarky suggestion that we're "cheating" in the olympics is "pounding his chest," and all the rest.

Yeah, well the "I'm as patriotic as the next guy just way too cool to show it" argument falls on deaf ears after enough posts. You have me at a disadvantage, sir, since I don't know the gentleman personally nor anything about his family. And frankly, it's irrelevant.

I just know what he posts. And speaking as a "chest pounder" who DOESN'T have a bumper sticker on his car of any kind, whose posts aren't suffused with "bravado" and aren't "cheap and shallow" I find the suggestion that we cheat in the Olympics offensive.

I'm talking overall context and I never suggested you were full of bravado - only that some people express their patriotism differently.

True enough. And I'm doubtless melting down here a little. It's just that that suggestion of "cheating" really tees me off, especially given some things that have happened to us in the Olympics.

After Ben Johnson was stripped of his 100m gold medal, some media genius asked Carl Lewis if his medal was "tainted." Carl said it was Johnson's medal that was tainted, not his.

No problem. My take is using pros isn't "cheating" in the truest sense of the term but rather that using pros sullys the richness of the Olympic tradition. But que sera, sera. :)

Back in the Vietnam days in the Air Force we used to laugh at the (probably)
apocryphal story of the public affairs guy trying to keep a hot shot jet jockey on a leash in a media interview.

Q: Captain, what do you think about the performance characteristics of the Phantom F-4.
A: It's the best #@$%^& airplane in the world!
Public Affairs guy: what the Captain meant to say. . .

Q: And what about the skills of the North Vietnamese pilots?
A: #$%@# those little #$@#$%^#'s
PAG: What the Captain meant to say. . .

That story was so ubiquitous anytime anybody said anything stupid the inevitable response was: "what the captain meant to say."

I relate this pointless tale only because your role in these last couple of posts reminded me of that poor public affairs officer. "What the Kepler meant to say. . .":D

Re: Obama 6(...66)

I honestly hate watching the pros play in the Olympics.

I'm with you and Kepler on that one. We will never have a moment like hockey in '80 again. But things change, and not necessarily for the better. At least Coach K had the last "dream team" saying and doing the right things, no matter what they may have thought. But the days when we could send a college pickup team to the Olympics and be assured of a gold are over. And I wouldn't want our kids humiliated by NBA types from other countries just to make the point that we're being true to Baron de Coubertin's ideals.

No, I'm saying using pros in the Olympics is cheating (I appreciate the defense, but I'm absolutely saying what O.P. is accusing me of, and I'm proud of it). The rules were changed because we lost to Yugoslavia in hoops and the TV networks had to spoon-feed a moron audience with MJ or nobody would watch. Middle America would rather watch us win by 60 than play down to the wire and maybe not win. They're sporting that way.

Pio must be having a bad week, he's descended into inane ad hom attacks a half dozen times. He's usually better than that, but we can each bench a player a few weeks here until they cool off.

I rest my case. Cynicism is not an alternative to thought. Bashing your country every chance you get, in matters important and trivial is not "cool." It's vulgar and calculated to keep the ugly unshaven girls in the coffee house giggling, but that's about all.

Telling the truth is not "ad hom." He doesn't like NBA players in the Olympics and he calls it "cheating." It isn't. Words have meaning. It must be endlessly disappointing to live in a country that so infrequently meets your high standards.

So friggin what, unbunch your granny panties and grow up. He is against the idea and America's policy in the Olympics, if you dont like it too bad. It doesn't make him a bad American for thinking that no matter how much you pretend it does.

BTW it is every citizens right and JOB to question the actions of their country if they feel they have acted in error. Those people who follow blindly are the truly unpatriotic.

Yep and yep.

This is a message board...expect opinions. Keps opinion on 'cheating' in the olympics has really nothing to do regarding patriotism. IMO its a significant abstract...though an interesting perspective at that.
