Re: Obama 6(...66)

So friggin what, unbunch your granny panties and grow up. He is against the idea and America's policy in the Olympics, if you dont like it too bad. It doesn't make him a bad American for thinking that no matter how much you pretend it does.

BTW it is every citizens right and JOB to question the actions of their country if they feel they have acted in error. Those people who follow blindly are the truly unpatriotic.

Okay. However, in your full throated defense of his patriotism, you find it necessary to attack mine (at least by inference). Why?

And leave my panties out of this please.

Yep and yep.

This is a message board...expect opinions. Keps opinion on 'cheating' in the olympics has really nothing to do regarding patriotism. IMO its a significant abstract...though an interesting perspective at that.

I'll make a note of your standards here: that you can use and define words however you want, without exposition. Got it. I assume you'll extend the same courtesy to me. Yes?

Tell Priceless I hope he's doing well.

Only goal was to say that there may be a difference in opinion due to Keps opinion being an abstract. Perhaps from your pov of my thinking that its even an abstract is too much of a stretch, on the other hand maybe Kep feels that its not an abstract but a fact...either way I'm not judging on the position itself.

Tell Priceless I hope he's doing well.

I'd love to if only I'd seen him here recently. Let's all hope he's doing well.

Ahhh, this must be that "nuance" I keep reading about. Got it. Thanks.:)

Telling the truth is not "ad hom." He doesn't like NBA players in the Olympics and he calls it "cheating." It isn't. Words have meaning. It must be endlessly disappointing to live in a country that so infrequently meets your high standards.

Here is something to consider - is his cheating rule applicable only to the U.S.? Because if he thinks it's cheating no matter who uses pros then has nothing to do with patriotism at all does it? Never mind I think there are far more logical litmus tests for determing whether or not someone loves their country then what goes on in a sporting event.

Just food for thought and not trying to aid in ganging up you. :)

Any country who uses pros in the Olympics is "cheating." When the IOC changed the rules to allow pros, they were "cheating."

"Using pros = cheating" is a snarky comment like "the Yankees bought the World Series." Back when the Soviets were cheating by using pros they probably figured out a way to comply with the letter of the law. For that matter, so did we. How many of the 1980 team members were on hockey scholarships? That isn't as pro as being an "officer in the Red Army" (ahem), but it's still violating the spirit of the Olympics.

The "you hate my mommy, er, America" thing is wonderful 2003 nostalgia so hopefully we'll hear more of it.

Um, if the IOC makes the rules, how are they ever cheating by altering said rules (as long as those alterations are themselves done according to the rules)? Did MLB "cheat" when they lowered the pitcher's mound, or the NBA when they added the three-point line?

Sorry, but just because you disagree with a rules change, doesn't make it cheating.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

So, you don't think the US hosting the Olympic Games is a good thing?
Jobs for people in construction, hospitality, travel, how many other industries?
Why do conservatives hate America?
So let's see, so far this year, conservatives have been against:
Bill Clinton traveling to N. Korea to secure the release of American journalists.
An American city hosting the Olympic Games
Rescuing American sailors from Somali pirates
Helping American automobile companies stay in business
And offering Americans affordable healthcare
Again, why do conservatives hate America? Why do they feel that America isn't able to do any of these things, why do they doubt the greatness of this country?

Oh, yeah, cause we have a black Democrat as President.

You people make me sick.
rufus, grow up - you sound like my three year old. Conservatives around the country aren't opposed to sponsoring the Chicago rehab expo 2016 because they "hate America" and are racists. It's another huge cash drain that we're all lucky to have dodged. A friend of mine has been working in Chicago construction. He says it's unbelievable the amount of Obama Bucks being funneled into the city. It would only get worse if they had a legitimate excuse to suck up even more tax dollars, at a time when we can least afford it. This isn't hatred of America, it's defense against one man's political corruption. It doesn't get any more patriotic than that.
The rest of your post is pure nonsense, to which I can only say in same spirit: "Well you're a stupidhead!"

Seriously? Cheaters? You're ruining the whole apple pie-eating Joe College fun inspiring movie thing for me.

Like it or not, its part of stimulus...Minneapolis is seeing alot of construction also. I don't necessarily agree with the total gist of rufus' message. On the other hand, saying that you just know (with approximately zero hard facts) that Chicago is getting more than its fair share of stimulus due to corruption...is indeed typical of 'right' or conservative baseless ideological perspective.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Its painfully obvious that conservatives have put anti-Obamaism above rooting for their country. They actually are happy if something goes sour for the country, while very few of them are around to celebrate when something goes right. Its a juvenile attitude, but that's the current GOP who is dominated by these idiots while the dwindling # of moderates keep getting driven from the party. Its going to be real amusing next year when their candidates actually have to defend some of the statements coming out of party headquarters during an election campaign.

It's painfully obvious that leftists are a bunch of mindless sheep and lemmings that will give up liberty and forego their nation to blindly follow an idol that occupies political office.

That's what happens when people let raw emotion trump objective thought and decision-making.

Now, why don't you run along and continue your Obama "coo & swoon" routine. :D

Funny how you change one word and you get the George W Bush era! :D

That's just as unfounded as when rufus made the claim. I was cheering loudest and longest when Big Bill freed the people, and when the pirates were taken out by the Seals. And I'm the most conservative person here.

I wasnt attacking yours, I was speaking in general. This business on both sides where everyone plays one long game of follow the leader and then attacks anyone who dares wants to think for themselves (please note I said BOTH sides, everyone is guilty of the "my way is right because we say it is" BS) is what is really destroying this country.

I attacked you calling him Anti-American which is a steaming pile of crap. You don't like his opinion and that is cool I pretty much agree with you (I hate the use of pro players but I don't think it is cheating) but that doesn't make him Anti-American. His left leaning ideals don't make him Anti-American and neither do your right leaning ideals. We are ALL Americans and it is about ****ing time we started acting like it and not a bunch of high schoolers arguing over who's clique is cooler and more popular! The only time lately we act like Americans in total is when something bad happens :(

From politico website:

A young organizer at the conservative “Defending the American Dream Summit” interrupted a panel discussion last Friday to reads the news from a BlackBerry.

A tracker attending the event caught the crowd’s reaction in the Arlington, Va. hotel ballroom on video: The place erupted in hooting and wild applause, a scene perversely reminiscent of the exultation that followed the U.S. Olympic hockey team’s “Miracle on Ice” victory against the Soviets in 1980.

“[Chicago lost] on the very first vote! They did not have any chance…” the woman said to an ovation, according to the video, which was recorded by a National Journal tracker and blasted to reporters by Think Progress, an offshoot of the liberal Center for American Progress.

A blogger with the right-wing Weekly Standard reported: “Chicago loses! Chicago loses!... Cheers erupt at WEEKLY STANDARD world headquarters,” before hastily pulling down the post and replacing it with an item that omitted the newsroom reaction.

RedState's Erick Erickson ditched loftier prose and punched out the letters "Hahahahaha,” while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich combined the loss with Friday’s dreadful unemployment report to conclude "President Obama fails to get the Olympics while unemployment goes to 9.8% …America needs focused leadership," on his Twitter account.

Pure knuckledragger reactions right here, from all sorts of places on the right. Far from one idiot or one talk show host, rooting for American to fail as long as it embarrasses Obama is clearly a widespread grassroots phenomenon out of the caveman crowd. One only wonders how many USCHO conservatives will be honest and admit they share the same sentiment...

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Its painfully obvious that conservatives have put anti-Obamaism above rooting for their country.

Not all, only a few operatives who want to get back in power. A few real people follow them blindly, but not many. In this, it's exactly the same as the Left.

There is a difference, and it's interesting (not nefarious). The Right never criticizes the US. When the country does something they don't like, they blame somebody else (the Left, the government, a cabal). Now you can look at this as patriotic, or you can look at it as never accepting responsibility, depending on your perspective.

I think it's a difference in patriotism. It seems that the Right begins with an axiom, "The US is good," and then argues back on all issues from that axiom. The Left begins with a set of axioms, "These principles are good," and then argues forward to reach the conclusion "The US was good" (or bad) in this instance.

That sounds a lot like the difference between positing a supreme being and evaluating all events illuminated by that or beginning with materialist principles and then arguing forward to decide whether there's a God.

Or indeed the general difference between Rationalist and Empiricist philosophies.

If there's any truth to that, it means we'll talk past each other forever, because one personality type's fundamental method of thinking is simply incomprehensible and thus "wrongheaded" to the other. That would make attempts at political persuasion on principles impossible, and all that would be left would be emotional appeals.

Tell you what, Pio -- I apologize for attacking your form of thinking. You're a good guy whose comments are worth reading (there's no point putting you on ignore because I always want to see your posts anyway), and that's probably just a place we don't want to go. Pax vobiscum.

Yeah, that reaction seems a little over the top, maybe there's some pure anti-Obama sentiment involved - but my nit to pick is equating
hoping we don't all have to fund 'Big Dig season 2: The Windy City'
to 'rooting for American to fail' (yours) or 'hating America' (rufus's).
There are legitimate reasons to be glad it's going to Rio.
