Re: Obama 6(...66)

I've already made my case against HR 3200, citing specific pages of the text.

None of the commentary you provided nor copy and pasted referenced actual verbiage from the document - you've only referencd page numbers. I don't see what there is to rebut. This is not an attack nor slander, it's a request for specifics. And given you seem to be having similar troubles with Exile and Kepler, perhaps you should consider the common denominator in all of this. Anything else you want to discuss wkrough@yahoo.com

Beyond that, good day.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

mmmmkay rufus. You need to not be a dope anymore if you wanna go on the Kum Ba Ya Jamboree and get your free stuffed Obama doll, mmmmkay? There's a good boy....

And you know what you need to do. It rhymes with "mow me".
Condescend much?

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Slate links a Star Tribune (Mpls left-wing paper) column indicating that ACORN was instrumental in Al Franken's election, possibly filling out absentee ballots for thousands of shut-ins, maybe registering cemetery occupants for more of the same, etc. as has been their protocol in other states.
Before being exposed, ACORN claimed to have "registered" 43,000 new voters in Minn. for last November.
Franken (a former comedian who entered politics by allying himself with ACORN) won on a recount by just a few hundred of the disputed absentee ballots.
It will probably not be investigated further (the Secretary of State in charge of elections was apparently also elected by ACORN, I don't know about the Attorney General) but if it is, could it invalidate the election? Is the long state nightmare not yet over?
And not that I dislike Minnesota, but let me also point out that the Tigers' magic number is now 4.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

I agree 100 percent that expenditures initiated by policy are completely different from expenditures resulting from inherited policy. So definitely my bad for introducing that metric in that way -- it was not applicable. I don't know that the argument prior to my addition was obviously restricted to expenditures, but ideally it should be.

I think it was pretty cheap to assume I was deliberately misleading because I think I always try to be honest (I do not, for the record, always try to be nice), but that's an exercise for the reader.
Actually, I thought maybe you were in a bit of a mischievous mood and threw out that metric just to see if anyone would catch it. My reply was meant to be a bit of good natured ribbing, indicating it didn't slide by me. Sorry you took it the wrong way. Guess I should have put one of these ;) with it.

Well I'll call off the hit. Maybe. ;)

I'd like a stay of execution too, as mine was certainly not deliberate. The thrust of excessively adroit and specious banter sometimes slips by me when I'm feeling a little tired. :)

To cut the tension, I saw this commercial today:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fCiTAJi1yRk&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fCiTAJi1yRk&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

If my Chia pet in college (Chia Scooby Doo) wasn't such a failure, I'd snap this right up, put it on a pedastal and build a fenced-in rock garden around it. ;)

Heh: http://gawker.com/5371272/glenn-beck-is-even-wrong-in-the-future

Yesterday, in furtherance of his indictment of Barack Obama as an Olympics-mongering gamewhore, Glenn Beck pointed out that the Olympics suck and Vancouver lost $1 billion when it hosted them. Next year.

In as sad an indication we've seen yet of how low the politico-media complex has fallen, it took the ****ing White House of the United States of America to point out, on its blog, that you can't lose money on the 2010 Olympics if it's still 2009:

Re: Obama 6(...66)

I think your jousting at a bit of a strawman here. No one has put forward a relativist argument as extreme as the one you mention and who has said Iran's system of government is superior. If anyone has sympathy for a "republican (form of)" government run partly by the Clergy, its the far right.

Regarding your last sentence, thank you for distinguishing between the right and far right - it's rare to see the mainstream right not tossed in with the radical evangelical right.

Well if everyone has the right to choose why shouldn't we let the USSR or whatever other nation you want to name choose the form of government they want? I am not defending Communism but it isnt our responsibility or our right to tell people how they should live their lives.

No one denies America is great, what some of us deny is that we are infallible. We screw up all the time just like everyone else and there is nothing wrong with owning up to your mistakes...in fact that is the adult thing to do. To deny the mistakes or ignore them is acting like a 2 year old having a temper tantrum and pretty much guarantees we will make the same mistakes again. It isnt weakness, it is our responsibility as the greatest nation in the world, the standardbearer of truth and justice to admit when we have done something wrong.

This is a problem on both sides, no one ever wants to admit they may have been mistaken for fear of seeming weak...well i would rather have the honesty then deflection and lies.

....

Yes, I remember vividly staying up late to watch the election returns from the USSR. Would Yuri Andropov be "elected" to a second "term" or not? Very exciting stuff. Wait, wait, we've just gotten in the totals from Siberia.

How can we deny our mistakes when a generous portion of our punditocracy makes its living pointing them out? And some (the NYT for instance) print stories adverse to our interests even when the president asks them not to.

Game, set, and match to Old Pio! Seriously though, handyman, I'm sure you had a brain cramp, but you really ought to use your head before you type something like that first paragraph. To drive home Old Pio's response, the analogy you were using was tantamount to asking, "Well if everyone has the right to choose why shouldn't we let the USSR or whatever other dictatorship you want to name keep the form of government they want, and to hell with what their citizens desire?"

And Old Pio's response to the rest speaks for itself. I might add that the fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives - describe it however you like - is very often manifested in a conservative's knowledge that, though imperfect, America's actions are almost always well-intentioned and (law of unintended consequences aside) we have brought much, much....MUCH! more good to humanity than not good. Whereas liberals too often ignore, or only admit under pressure, all the good we've done for humanity and instead focus in on the tiny percentage of mistakes we've made..... and then use this tiny percentage of mistakes to rationalize surrending America's role as the spearhead against tyranny and state-sponsored injustice and agression in this world.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Did anyone see this particular show? I didn't. It's interesting that the video clip ends right after his statement about Vancouver. Maybe his guest was about to correct him about the Vancouver Olympics not being held yet? Maybe the billion loss was for Turin and he miss-spoke? I'm not trying to defend him, but the video would be more convincing if it kept going to see if his guest corrected him, or he did so himself.

I'm sure it's also quite possible to do a reasonably good accounting of what the net profit/loss will be at this point. The sponsorship deals are done, tickets have been on sale for a while, TV contracts are in place, the venues have been built, security has been hired, etc. If Vancouver really is about to lose $1B, then I'm sure that it's not going to be a complete surprise come February.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

People do know Glenn Beck is a comedian, right? Even more than Coulter it has always been obvious to me that he's simply playing a character to make money off the stupid. The great thing about appearing on Fox is you literally cannot overplay your hand.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Do the Olympics ever make money for the host city? With all the money you have to put into facilities it doesn't seem like an easy thing to do.

If memory serves me correctly LA wound up in the black. And there were two principal reasons for it: revenue from the first-ever sponsored torch run and from soccer. They held the games at Stanford stadium and even though soccer was an exhibition sport, filled up that old barn for every session. Hundreds of thousands of unanticipated paid admissions.
