Norwich Women's Hockey

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Here's my take on this. As we all know, with the absence of scholarships at DIII there is very little incentive for a coach to keep a marginal player. (yes, I know DI schollies are only one year at a time but nobody gets their pulled out from under them if they are making an effort to compete.) As a result, part of playing DIII is always looking over your shoulder to see who is being recruited to take your spot. With all that said, there are many players at DIII who are good enough to never have to look over their shoulders, and many of those girls by definition would be good enough to make a DI roster. I therefore would conclude that those girls are playing DIII because they put something OTHER than hockey as their top priority.

Disagree with several of these observations.

1 - I firmly believe that a good percentage of players choose a school more because of the hockey, than because of the education. This holds true for both D1 and D3.

2 - Many good D3 players end up in D3, because they cannot get a scholly in D1. Does not mean they could not play D1 as a third or fourth liner, but they go to D3, cause they do not get the good D1 offers and then elect they rather go to a good D3 team to shine as opposed to being a spare part player on a D1 team.

3 - Similarly from that same player caliber group, some that elect to go to D1 initially, become transfers to D3 a year or two later, when things do not pan out to their liking. In most of those cases, the player moves because of Hockey, not because of academics.

While we all would like to believe that our daughters chose their school for academic reasons above hockey, I think if we are honest with ourselves, we have to admit that most chose their school for the opportunity to play hockey. Otherwise, they [at least the girls in the upper midwest] would be attending schools like ASU and USC. :)

I would agree that many kids do choose a school because of hockey, but I believe with the NESCAC teams that is a little different. I am quite familiar with Amherst, Middlebury and Bowdoin who are always one of the consistently better teams. Now before people go crazy about bringing up NESCAC as something special, US World and News Report has just ranked colleges and in the Liberal Arts category Williams #1, Amherst #2, Middlebury #4, Bowdoin #6, Hamilton #16, Wesleyan #17 and Colby #18. Congrats to them, very impressive!!

I also know for a fact that several players from Amherst, Middlebury for sure were offered scholarships, but opt to go to these fine institutions because not just education, but aslo want to play a second or sometimes 3rd sport, which you cannot do at D1 anymore. There is also a tremendous alumni base who help many of these athletes into jobs right out of college. Lastly, by playing D3 these kids get to experience a little more of a college life, versus being owned by the D1 colleges. Also, for some of these students financial aid is not factored into the decisions, as many pay full price at these expensive institutions, so scholarships are not always a factor.

Agree that for the most part those that choose to attend an Ivy or Small Ivy, clearly have academics as a key reason for that choice. Can speak from personal experience that that is true for our D.

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

I think that all recruits or nearly all recruits (whether D1 or D3) take BOTH academics and hockey into consideration when making their decision. But different individuals give different weights to one or the other. For some, they give equal emphasis, while others are 90-10 academics and for others the reverse is true. In addition you have the factor of cost, which for some is the No. 1 consideration, while for a fortunate few it's not that significant.

And lastly there is the influence of "best fit" which you hear so often but is not typically explained in detail. In truth I believe that for most this is merely a combination of the above three (hockey, academics and cost) with possibly subjective measures added to the mix that can tip the balance in favor of one school or the other. A certain school can come to "feel right" based on how the recruiting process played out; her official visits; the campus and its location; her preference for a big school or small, urban or a small town feel; whether she already knows others at the school or another who will be going there; and possibly family history and/or her parents' influence on the decision.

Lots of things go into it, and the relative importance of each will vary for each student athlete!

At the end of the day it is more important how the Student Athlete applies their efforts both in the class room and on the field of play while they are at school. This is what forms the individual.

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Back to the Big List. I'm starting to think its just a scare tactic to make the returners nervous.

The "team" has undoubtedly already met and may actually be on the ice already for Captain's practices. There will be no surprises amongst the team as to who is trying out and who their competition may or may not be.

Maybe the announced list will only include the players who make the team and they are waiting for the team selection to be done, since folks seem to think there will be cuts? I think it would be unattractive to potential recruits if the school announced their recruits and then some of them didn't make the team.......

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Prez I know it's a little early but how is the ECAC Classic shaping up? I will miss the games between Norwich & RIT! In the short history (3 years I believe) the games between those two teams were great to watch. Wish the best to the coaching staff and players in their jump to DI. Really looking forward to see how the top of DIII compares/competes in DI.

Should be another outstanding tournament. While losing RIT is unfortunate, you can't get a much better replacement than Plattsburgh. It will still be one of the premier women's hockey tournaments you will see in all of Division III this year and the early season showdown between Plattsburgh and Norwich should be a barnburner!

Now that homecoming weekend is over my time is a little bit less occupied and I am going full tilt into tackling some hockey related items, including the infamous Norwich women's hockey incoming recruits list.

Stay tuned...

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

the talent in this list is undeniable. this incoming class alone can be a nationally ranked team. they have no reason to play any returners at all and still make the FF at the very least. the lockerroom atmosphere will be really rough with everyone looking over their shoulders and who will make the team, who will get the premier playing time. a ton of talent is never going to see ice or even see the bench. bolding is a great coach with a great staff but it will be near impossible to have a happy team with so much over the top talent being idle so often. maybe this too much of a good thing. for dIII teams, happy teams with excellent team chemistry and just enough talent can go very far and win it all even though on paper they are vastly outclassed.

Looks like an outstanding class of recruits but lets not forget...that yes Norwich lost a tremendous senior class that helped bring the Cadets to championship contention but there is a good core of players that are still in the mix of things.Players that are looking over the shoulders would be the so called "bubble" player! Coach Bolding is just trying to keep this locomotive barreling down the track.....he has momentum and doesn't want to stop! Good luck to all players and anxious to see what product ends up on the ice....chemistry is key to success.

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Nice list, but they have 6 maybe 7 returning D and 5 on "the list" - I thought they had a lot of coaches! Good luck to everyone with intensions of making the team and seeing ice time.

Norwich came into the 2010-11 season with a similar number of players on the roster and a similar size recruiting class. That season turned out pretty well.

Over the last two seasons Norwich has lost the players that the program was built on and helped establish the quick rise in the ranks to the top of the D3 world.

Sophie Leclerc, Cindy Fortin, Julie Fortier, Melissa Rundlett, Sarianne Lynn and Amanda Wilks to name a few are gone now and coming into this season there are holes to fill.

This class is simply a reprentation of a program and coaching staff committed to maintaining the success and tradition that has been established at Norwich over the past five years.

I see Liz Gemmiti played 27 games (6-8-14) for RIT during the '10-'11 season, but did not play last season. Was she injured or not in school (she is listed as a sophmore at Norwich)?

Didnt play last year at RIT. Athletically a sophomore from what I gather.
